970's having performance issues using 4GB Vram - Nvidia investigating

Is it stupid that even after all these reported memory problems, I still feel very tempted to get a 970 for 1080p?

I'm holding out to see if there might be some deals on this week only tomorrow that might give me the nudge I need to get one, but we'll see.

Im considering the same. Love that power efficiency. Just cannot make my mind up, its torture. The price difference for 980 is pretty insane.

Tempted to even use the 970 for when I get my 1440p monitor too. Then if it really becomes an issue, hold out the for Nvidia 16nm cards?

Or do I get a 780Ti, for around the same money?

I've decided to go for a 970 despite all the hoopla. I've been closely following articles, forums, podcasts and it seems that the major flaw in the 970 was it's marketing. Yes, there may be an issue with certain games when you're pushing the graphics too hard but what do you expect when you're paying a fraction of the 980?

In the end, you get what you pay for, and the 970 still gives you the best bang for buck in terms of performance, cooling, and efficiency.

I'm not an Nvidia apologist nor am I supporting false advertising. But, given the options available in the current GPU market and my budget, I think the 970 is the only practical option I have.

IMHO.

Gibbo - just out of curiosity, do you know if nvidia are working on driver improvements to reduce the problems with drivers? I thought they were trying to implement a fix which put the windows memory usage into the slower 512mb memory and saved the 3.5gb memory for high bandwidth usage but it's all gone quiet?

The driver was brought up by an Nvidia forum moderator. He spoke out of turn. Nvidia later stated in their official announcement that they will not be releasing a driver regarding this particular memory issue.

Hey, first post here! :)

firstly having never bought anything from OcUK the way they have handled the whole situation is amazing and I will be buying from you guys in the future so the great customer service has got you at least one new customer! :P

anyway onto the topic at hand, I still feel the 970 is a great value card even if it is only a 3.5GB card which it seems to perform as, it's far cheaper then the 980, has plenty of power and if you are running out of VRAM at 3.5GB then it won't be much longer before you run out with 4GB. obviously the 980 does have more VRAM and more power but it costs much more and well that's why I still think price to performance the GTX970 is great.

with this generation of cards a single card is likely to be nearly reaching it's limits if you are running anything with settings that will use 4GB (not including really really bad ports and games using it as a cache! :P), you can look at the 8GB cards but if you are running a single card then you will never make use of it as mentioned before they are pushed hard when you are using just 4GB.

however in my opinion if you are running crossfire or SLI then the 8GB is a really good idea as that kind of power can make use of all that VRAM and maybe the next generation of cards will be powerful enough to make better use of 6 or 8Gb of VRAM if you only run a single card.

having come from the Nvidia forums people over there are acting like the card they bought has turned into doggy doody and well I fully agree if people want a refund then they should get one as buyers were misled but I still think it's a great card for the money, sorry if this rambles a bit, I started this as a general reply that might help as some people were unsure about returning or not. :P

Yup agreed with above comment am keeping my 970 the alternative from AMD is just too hot and noisy, the 970 is still the best card going around for price and performance really.

I hope Nvidia do as they suggested and release new drivers to make full and better use out of the 4gig or at least release fixed 4gig 970s and allow RMA swap outs later on.

Even if 390X appears and is good you know few months later Nvidia will release something pretty good and hopefully all those nice 120/144hertz 4K panels or 4K IPS panels will be out by then.

Most are already on weekly offer, so tomorrow those on offer will go up.

Can you tell me what what your running temps are on the gtx970?

Amd really need to get a decent reference cooler fitted on there next top end release as the amount of people that think the 290/x runs hot and loud is daft. The 290/x with a good cooler does not run hot and loud. I repeat with a decent cooler there is not a problem with the core running hot and the cooler being loud.

There is nothing hot and noisy about my 4GB Msi Gaming R9 290, has great temps and I cant hear it, wait, nope cant hear it. Quite sick of hearing this quoted by clueless.......enough, have a coffee......ok calm now. :D

I sent my card back through http://www.myhermes.com. It was £7.12p signed for and tracked. Only slight negative was the insurance is only upto £250. That isn't too much of a problem for a single card parcel. The other decent option is Royal Mail special Delivery for £11 (which I found out about today ).

Royal mail special delivery is solid.

Don't use Hermes for anything electronic, they wont pay out. You should read the terms and conditions.

First off all, thank you Overclockers for the great customer care. I am returning an ASUS Strix 970 xD. Before buying thre 970, i was trying to choose between the 980 from asus, Zotac 980(reference design) and 970 from ASUS. At the end and because of the specs and price, i ended up buying the 970. Now after all this mess, i just feel they lied to all of us. At the moment i don't really want to change for AMD but eventually if they come out with something really god, then i will change. I'm not happy with nVidia but i will probably stick with them by now. I think i will pick the 980 Strix from ASUS. I also love the reference design, the one from ZOTAC with 5 years warranty is tempting xD. What do you guys think about this one: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-269-MS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1752. It's an MSI Radeon R9 290X Gaming Edition 8GB we can pre-order.

THIS 1000000%

I bought a mobile phone a couple months ago on ebay and it was sent via Myhermes.
Arrived with a broken screen and Myhermes would not take responsibility or pay out despite the seller paying for cover up to £250.

I would never ever advice anyone to use Myhermes for anything. They are cheap for a reason. Bunch of cowboys. People turn up in little hatchback cars with your stuff. Not professional at all.
