970's having performance issues using 4GB Vram - Nvidia investigating

Well I have always been impressed with OCUK customer service to be quite honest both in-store and over the web.

This latest show of customer good will from Overclockers has been superb. I didn't buy my GTX970 from them but was still advised they might be able to help me out down the line should I not be able to resolve direct with the firm I used. Fortunately I have managed to get mine returned but was not as straight forward as OCUK.

I swapped my 970 strix for a 980 MSI twin frozr mainly because I use a ROG Swift and had noticed occasional stutter with the 970. I originally thought, ahhhh it needs another 970 in SLI to smooth it but alas RAM-Gate came to light. The STRIX did also suffer from a moderate amount of coil whine which whilst I was fine with it many would not have been. Fortunately the 980 has zero whine even under bench and after punishing it last night have noticed no stutter as yet.

So a day in, I am glad I swapped up to a 980. Whine gone, stutter gone (touch wood) and residue re-sale value protected (well for a little longer than the 970 at least). The way I see it is that the 970 price will come down just because of the negativity surrounding it, which is a shame because the card really isn't that bad (1080p should be fine). It is just a shame that they did spec it correctly to begin with.

Well all I can say is give us another go.

You should not be disappointed, we are always here to help

You guys will 100% get my business now, this recent issue has shown which companies will step up and not shirk their responsibilities.

Especially if Gibbo decides to help out those guys who didn't use OCUK for their cards because at the end of the day some money off is better than no money off ;)

gigabyte finally offering customers a step up type plan to 980s in different countries maybe worth a try if you not happy contacting them.

some people have upgraded quite cheaply aswell.

maybe gibbo should contact them about this.

Going form 970 3.5GB to 980 4GB is insane IMO...

I would either Keep or Buy a stopgap card until 300 series...

TBH with gysnc and this scandal....Freesync and supporting AMD is long overdue for me.

I feel like NV are taking the **** out of me :(

My thoughts as well to be honest. I don't see that there's too much to gain by going up to 980 (expect a big PITA removing the card, draining the loop etc) and £100+ out of my wallet.

We got tricked and I understand anyone wanting to return their card, but it's just not worth doing with no real alternatives at the moment.

Just glad I didn't get the second card and block now. Look forward to the next generation - assuming we eventually get an apology!

So out of interest, what do we expect to happen with current 970 prices and demand?

Prices will typically go up, nearly all competitors have sold their older stocks which were owned at lower prices due to the GBP being stronger at time of purchase.

Pretty much all of our 970 prices have now increased as all lines are on new stock pretty much now as everything has sold through.

We've investigated it, the problem is we would happily offer some kind of system where we buy cards from customers who purchased elsewhere for a set price which would then be credited to their in-store account to then spend on something else, OcUK could then sell those cards B-grade.

Even though its a great idea, upon speaking to our IT department as the internal systems and processes here at OcUK would requires a serious re-coding effort it is simply not possible in what would be an acceptable timescale. Our IT is currently operating at 110% due to current task on hand and this is one very big task for them to do which would take days/weeks and due to current priorities they cannot fit it in anytime soon.

So we tried but without a serious hack/re-code to our internal systems and website right now it is not possible for us unfortunately.

Tried my best guys! :(

Gigabyte are not officially supporting us or offering anything. Un-officially they will try to help us with any RMA's we get, what that means is not very crystal clear but should help to minimise our cost, but even if they don't we have already decided to take there cards back a week ago. Customer is king!

Most of our customers have upgraded to 980's or another card already, OcUK has being doing that since last week. :)

No worries, at least you spoke to us and gave it a shot (more than other retailers are doing)

Hey Gibbo,

are they the only suppliers that are still not supporting you on this?

Well our own brand cards, due to small volumes were not even asking the supplier to support us, because volumes are so small and of course any cards we take back with no packaging we run the risk of no support, but it is our issue and we made the decision to take all brands back with or without support.

As others have said, we will lose short term, but gain in long term so the final outcome for OcUK is a win. :)

Dear customer,

Thank you for your patience regarding the recent GTX 970 complaint, GIGABYTE is still working with NVIDIA regarding this matter. But we do understand this may be a lengthy process, GIGABTYE has decided to offer a paid upgrade program for customers who are interested in moving up to the GTX 980.

The two model we are offering for the upgrade options are GV-N980G1 GAMING-4GD and GV-N980WF3OC-4GD. For customers who are interested in the upgrades, please provide a copy of the original purchase invoice, serial number, shipping information and the model you are interested. Once we received the information we will reply back with a price difference and how to proceed with the upgrade.

Thank you for choosing GIGABYTE.

Cheers Gibbo, I'm only asking due to the fact that it will help me in the future decide what makes of cards I go for.

I know OCUK are taking them back regardless but I would like to get the cards from suppliers that do support you and cut down your losses in it all.

Quite shocking of Gigabyte that when you consider the response of most of the other manufacturers' responses. I've always sworn by Gigabyte cards and have always highly recommended EVGA, but Gigabyte has always swung it because of the UK based RMA and quick turn-around. I think the next card I buy will most likely be EVGA

Good to see them doing something, no idea how they will process or sort this though but if they can then maybe it means Gigabyte are gearing up towards their own step-up programme on VGA and this could be them testing the system.

The fact they offer it on mainboards kind of makes sense they would eventually do it on VGA so no better time to trial such a system as now.
