970's having performance issues using 4GB Vram - Nvidia investigating

@ocuk..

Heres my story :)

I've been a customer with a certain bolton company from back when they were in little lever and selling out of a shed. This was a great many years ago, and I've been a loyal customer with them because they've never let me down. This is mostly because I've never had to call on them for support and things have just worked.

A few years ago I had a problem with a motherboard, 6 months after I had it they gave me a refund, this further strengthened my resolve in resisting other etailers and I stuck with them for every single purchase.

I've always said you find out how good a company is when the poop hits the fan, every company can look good at the point of sale, its when you need them that you see their true face.

So here we are, this 970 debacle has happened, and I have a (just) over 2 week old 970 G1. Said company isnt too keen on me returning it, citing that they are waiting on Gigabyte to let them know what to do. In stark contrast I read about how OCUK are dealing with the matter and my socks are well and truley blow clear across the room.

I can assure you that based on what I've read here I'm going to be a customer of OCUK going forward. Just need to work on the forums to get free P&P as I did with the "other" company :)

What me and others like me read on here does shape opinion and whilst we are small time buyers, like my dad says, the ocean is made of drops ;)

So I hope S**n do the right thing, if they dont its no big deal, it doesn't change the fact that loyalty is VERY hard to gain but so easy to lose. They've lost me as a customer for life and I will buy from OCUK instead of them, even if they refund me. They've lost me and countless others like me.

As someone earlier said, you cant even post on their forums are registrations are not working, they are useless when we need them the most.

This is my personal opinion and I stand by it.

Keep doing what you are doing OCUK, people are noticing what you do, the OCUK of old with the horror stories is long gone, and clearly you've risen like a Phoenix, testament to this is on trusted reviews you've CRUSHED the other guys, the people have spoken loud and clear.

p.s.

I only registered to say this, its important you know.

Sorry about your miss fortune with those guys, they are our competitor but I've always being friends with the owners and they are normally very good, so I feel your not getting the service that you the customer deserves.

OcUK made a decision to put the customer first, that meant we started accepting returns on all brands irrelevant if the supplier/vendor was supporting us not nearly a week ago, customer is king.

Anyway glad to have you onboard, look forward to your custom and you can see we have the best forum where staff are very proactive with responding to all types of request around the clock. :)

Not good in my experience. They gave incredibly bad service to me over 13 years ago, and I've never been back since.

I asked for an RMA to send my 970's back as I am planning on a high res screen (hence getting the two 970's initially)
I ordered two 8Gb 290x's and I've tried everything I can to get them to perform. They run hotter than the sun and out of all my games I could not get them to run properly. I was getting 22fps on FarCry 4, COD AW is unplayable and BF4 was 70fps with directX and a stuttering mess with mantle.

I'm now going to cancel the RMA and keep the 970's. Then see if I can return the two 290x's. I'll just have to put off buying the new monitor till I can afford two 980's to go with it.

Just a heads up to anyone else thinking of sending theirs back. Think hard about it before you do it. When Gibbo said the 970 is still a great card he's not wrong.

You know the old saying, actions speak louder than words?, your action and their inaction tell me everything I need to know. I'm sure its a small world out there when it comes to retailing this stuff, many fallen along the way and only the strong survive. The reality is customers are fickle and it doesn't take much to drive them away. As the young ones would say its clearly NOT just me when I say OCUK4LYFE ;)

Anyway that's enough praise, you get the idea :D

"customer is king" ... thats why you are 23 on the trust pilot site and "they" are 78. Such a shame, but all by their own hand.

For the record, I don't take pride in dissing anyone or any company, its peoples livelihoods we are talking about afterall, but when acompany doesn't care about its customers, its inevitable there will be an exodus to companies that do care.

Something is wrong, first try a single 290X see how that performs, if still issues you need to do a fresh install, but typically raw performance when all cards are stock the 290X normally has the performance edge.

Also you mention them getting hot, have you got them sandwiched next to each other? If so space apart as 290's will overheat if run in close proximity unless loud blower design.

Try one by itself, see how you get on. :)

So we have untill the end of Feb to return our cards?

Sad to have to do that tho. I like my 970, but the 3.5Gb memory issue does bother me. Supposedly even Dying Light is hitting 3.5Gb VRAM at 1080p! :(

But I dont want to step up to a 980, as it's £100 more expensive. And the 290x doesnt appeal to me.

They are quite close together. But if I was to move one to the other slot then it would be sitting right up against my PSU. Which would probably be even worse.
I've got 9 (yes 9!) fans running at the minute :)

I did try each card individually to see if one may be faulty but the both performed exactly the same. The graphics quality in the tomb raider benchmark was awful compared to the 970's.

My 3 previous cards have been AMD so I was expecting quite a lot from these cards. I'm just not willing to shell out for a new case when the one I've got is only 18 months old and has been great for all my previous cards.

Don't worry Gibbo, we've tried telling him in the 290X thread but he's not listening. :)

Even a radeon 7950 can get more than 22fps of FC4. There is either something really wrong with your setup or the post is just trolling and an effort to stop people buying the 290x.

Like Gibbo said, looks like you have a problem somewhere. But if you cant solve it easily then it might be worth it to just keep the 970s

I'm creating a win 8.1 bootable USB and I'm going to install it on a spare SSD.
I suppose it's less hassle than sending stuff back etc etc. Although I don't think I'm ever going to be happy with the temperatures.

I've contemplated returning my 970 G1 for a 980, but then not only does that cost extra to upgrade, but the cost of finding a parcel and paying delivery. Then I also think to myself, my G1 nearly clocks to 1600 and has great memory clocks and plays nearly every game I throw at it just fine.

If Dying Light or whatever that game is called is an unoptimized poss requiring retarded amounts of ram why get rid of the card.

Would I ever go back to an AMD? No **** chance, awful naff etc

Going form 970 3.5GB to 980 4GB is insane IMO...

I would either Keep or Buy a stopgap card until 300 series...

TBH with gysnc and this scandal....Freesync and supporting AMD is long overdue for me.

I feel like NV are taking the **** out of me :(

niel ill tell you now. your card is fine. keep it.

nothing to trouble it for quite a while. lot of scare mongary.

you know the score. the games that might trouble a 970 trouble all cards and 99 percent made by ubisoft :p

bf hardline runs better on 970 than 290x :) who would have thought it with such a crippled card :D

next game watch ;)
