970's having performance issues using 4GB Vram - Nvidia investigating

Does this mean anyone with a 290X can get all hot and bothered as well.

Depending what make of memory is used on a 290X (Elpida, Hynix or Samsung) the difference in performance can be more than the figures being quoted for the memory on the 970.

Should people with Elpida memory on their 290X do one of the following ?

1. RMA it

2. Sue AMD

3. Rant and rave on a forum

4. Take it out on the dog

5. Enjoy their gaming

Answers on a post card to the red baron.:D

You are quite correct Kaap and the difference between Elpida and Samsung can be over 1000 points clock for clock in Firestrike. Not that it matters. I am honestly flabbergasted by the hysteria in this thread and most of it is from AMD owners :D

Gotta love some drama.

Actually what Memory IC's are used is a vendor choice, nothing to do with AMD.
Plenty of people have sent Elpida cards back, a lot of them just got 290's from different vendors with Hynix or Samsung IC's.

This is by architectural design, Nvidia's architectural design.

AMD VRAM issue = Unintentional - an oversight by AMD's board partners but not intentional.
Nvidia VRAM issue = Intentional - they likely knew it could cause issues.

Lol.
Mate, if you didn't own Nvidia you would be treated as some kind of fanboy for a comment like that. Kudos for owning Nvidia 980/970 and speaking the truth!

It goes further than just the make of RAM that's used on the PCB, it's one complete lottery on how well the memory works with the rest of the card (overall performance).

Why? your card performs exactly the same as it does the day you bought it, the way people are reacting you would think that NVidia have been faking benchmarks.

Not the question I asked, I asked is it enough for a mass rma not can I rma mine..

Would I rma mine if Nvidia offered it en mass, possibly and then get a 980, I've got g sync so tied into Nvidia anyway.

Hardly makes me a "fanboy". If you read properly i said they "likely" knew about it, not that they did. How could they miss something like that.

does the card function in 99% of games? yes? then I doubt you`ll get an RMA based on ram issues.

at t the end of the day the GTX 970 is a good card- but for those who use all 4GB of ram in games , it could be a different matter.

going forward? the issue might well become more prevalent with more games using 3GB + of ram at 1440P

Oh really? I thought it was mostly panicky 970 owners :p

I am not blaming AMD for this one, I agree it is up to the vendors.

The point I am making is you can get a variation in how things can perform and for the most part people with 290s are not bothered with what memory their cards use as long as they work.

With the 970s the loss of performance is tiny yet to some it is like the end of the world.

The funny part is some of the people who ditch their 970s in favour of a 290 could end up with a card with Elpida memory, how ironic.:D

I haven't time to read every single page, but I thought the 980 had this issue too, just not that much of a problem as it is on 970s? So why would people sell a 970 for a 980?

Again, it's a complete lottery. Just because a card has Samsung or Hynix RAM, that it doesn't mean you'll have an overall better performing card/clocking card. It's a lottery on how well the rest of the silicon works alongside with it.
