9800X3D Noctua Build

Much panic and drama this evening as I got on with the dreaded BIOS flashback (which ASRock recommended, to my surprise).

Ooo the motherboard and PSU look very smart… reassuringly heavy:

The RGB awakens!

Oh god oh god oh god…

… seemed to work as the lights stopped blinking after around 4-5 mins. I’ll find out tomorrow!

Also got on with installing the SSD and the RAM. You can just about see it here but the RAM looks obscene… :o probably not the best choice aesthetically but it was the most readily available CL28 6000 kit at the time of purchase:

Let’s see if I can get it up and running tomorrow :)

All fans in place now! I’ll chop the long ends of the rubber mounts once I’m happy it’s all working.

Oops, I forgot to update this thread as I was having a mare with the CPU overheating. I'll get into what happened below :)

Taking the fan off the G2 to install it:

Note to everyone else, remove the plastic guard before installing it on the CPU:

:o :o :o

As embarrassing as that was, that isn't actually what stuffed me, although it probably caused my concentration to lapse.

When I did install the G2, I didn't quite line up the screws properly, so had to pick it up and reseat it. No problem, so I thought. What I truly failed to consider was the impact that had on the plastic thermal paste guard I'd put in place. I'm pretty sure the plastic was sitting right on top of the CCD, oh no!

Well, after a lot of worrying a reseat sorted that out no problem. Here's how the rest of the build went.

Hooking up the cables. GPU-less:

Oh, hello, Lian Li and 3090... I shall extract you!

Sitting in there nicely:

Now with the GPU stand that comes with the case:

I think it looks pretty good! Take that, nay-sayers :D :p

One thing to watch out for with the GPU stand is that I've scuffed the bottom of the case (where it's sitting) slightly from getting this into place, which was annoying, so do be careful with this!

as long as I can figure out how to fix/disable the RGB on my motherboard... no rainbow puke :D
For fans "disable" is easy, just unplug them. For motherboard lights, black paint or duck tape can work at worst! Latest Windows 11 has Dynamic Lighting under Personalisation and that supports some controllers. Found out when my CPU cooler (run off Gigabyte mobo header) changed from unicorn mode to Windows blue during setup. Doesn't seem to spot the RGB logo on my Asus card though.

Oh god oh god oh god…
Yup, need there. Had to do mine again once I'd got the CPU in as Gigabyte had released a newer one and it appeared the version I'd installed had been made to have never happened.
it was the most readily available CL28 6000 kit at the time of purchase:

You found CL28? Think the lowest I could find was 30.

I was going to say it shouldn't be giving you grief. Mines running (for now!) on the cheapest Phanteks cooler that OCUK had in and it's doing quite well to be fair to it.

Now all you need to do is spray it all black. Can't run the risk of you being able to actually see stuff in there. What you need is black component in a black case on a black carpet, under a black desk....and then drop something!

@Cenedd yes there are some CL28 kits out there, but at the time they weren’t readily available in the UK so I had to buy it from an international seller.

I’ll order some spray paint :D

Let us know what temps you have on CPU etc.
I'm on 900 v2, always had noctua fans and will be getting one u have for 9800x3d build too.

Hey there - with a -35 curve optimiser offset... and +200 mhz CPU boost override, I'm getting CPU temps of 51 browsing the web with chrome, as low as 43 degrees when fully idle.

Nice, thank you, and what about gaming?

Gaming is going to be influenced by ambient case temps. As you’ll have seen from the photos, the 3090 is emitting hot air into the CPU fans.

Not a big deal though. From memory, CPU temp when gaming is in the 55-75 degree range. This is with a -35 curve optimiser and +200 boost offset though.

As for the 3090, this is by far and away the noisiest set of fans and frankly it’s annoying. I decided to open it up and see whether getting rid of dusk and re-pasting would help:

Disconnecting the RGB header was an absolute pig!

Gigabyte 30 series cards are seemingly hard work because to access the fans you need to remove the heatsink from the external shroud. Not a problem with a bit of patience though.

Here’s the fan serial number for anyone interesting. All three fans were the same, even though one fan is smaller:
mqeKxLK.jpeg

After removing the dust from the fans, they have become a lot less rattly, which is good, but one of them is a little whiny. I’ve ordered some replacements.

I repasted with Noctua NT H2 paste and at 100% GPU load it settles at around 67 degrees, which isn’t horrible but it’s still noisy.

I’ve bought some replacement thermal pads from Kritical pads and also a Noctua fan shroud from Etsy… albeit for a 3060 because of course the gigabyte 3090 was the ONLY model they didn’t make the shroud for - might work, might not, but I’m definitely putting Noctuas on it if I can :)

The parts will probably arrive early December.

The fans arrived and I was finding their whirring tooooo annoying so they've gone in without waiting for the thermal pads...

Hmm these don't seem to be the exact same fans...

Definitely worked though! Completely solved the annoying fan noise, highly recommended to anyone being bugged by fans!

There is still a little bit of coil whine when maxed out so I've ordered some superglue glue and may try attacking the coil caps with it... now we're really into scary territory!

I also took the time to trim off those brown rubber fan mount screw replacement things. it's now looking super neat and tidy, couldn't be happier with how it looks :)

Might be a silly question but have you set a frame rate limit in Nvidia Control Panel? They will often whine if they're pushing 500fps or something daft when you get to a menu if something non-taxing. Brand new 4080 Super did the same but it's not done it since I slapped an FPS limit in to match my screen's max refresh rate - no point in it ever rendering more frames than can be displayed! :D
