A 5.1 separates system better than Sonos

OP - You could also look into the Sony Bravia quads if you didn't want to run wires. Just another option to consider. I recently bought the system and did demo some 5.1 systems around the same budget and actually found the quads to be more immersive.

If you want proper stereo listening and separation, don't get an AV amp. If you want something that's good for watching TV etc, get whatever works.

Totally agree with this, if you want stereo then get a good 2 channel system.

FYI he DM'ed me a link to his sub that is better and cheaper than my Sonos sub.

Spoiler - it wasn't cheaper.
To be fair, he didn't say it was cheaper, he said it was his cheapest.

There's a lot of hyperbole being thrown around both ways here.

Sonos will be simpler to setup, but a properly setup eARC receiver is very easy to use. I don't have to touch my receiver when using my TV / blu ray player, it all just works. I could.use voice control as well if I wanted.

I've not had Sonos myself but family members really like theres, and the sound quality is decent imo.
That said, for a dedicated room, you can get a better experience for the same or less money with separates.
There's some bargains to be had with second hand speakers which don't change all that much year to year.

I also wouldn't count out Atmos for a dedicated room (even if you don't install to begin with). I've got a 5.1.4 setup and the Atmos adds an extra dimension in well mastered films.

Definitely worth trying to get a few demos if you are not convinced though.

I wouldn't pay £2.3k for any soundbar setup to be honest. You can often get Samsung's latest flagship soundbar system for around £700 every year once the offers start.

Of course, you can get more out of a separate system for the same money, but I wouldn't bother again unless I had a dedicated room.

Thanks folks, didn’t mean to start an argument. The 5.1 AV system needs more thought so I’ll listen to a few systems.

The Q Acoustic 5000 series look interesting as even though it’s a dedicated room, I want it to look good.

I’m confused by how much the price of receivers varies and what the higher priced ones actually add.

For now I’ve picked up an Arc with a view to swapping it out for an amp/speakers in the future. It can replace the Beam in the living room if I do that :-)

The Arc sounds fantastic (to me at least) but I did need to use an HDFury Arcana to get Atmos, DTS-MA passed directly to the soundbar. Sorting that out made an enormous difference. I’ve had to do this with three TVs so far, at this point I think Sonos should probably buy them and integrate the tech into their sound bars as it’s night and day.

Typically the higher end AVR's have

More power, more coaxial/optical/analogue HDMI inputs, second HDMI out, zone 2/3/4, additional subwoofer out, better room EQ/room EQ app support, more channels of amplification 5/7/9/11 etc, front wide supportb better build and component quality, larger PSU more efficient heatsinks.

You didn't mention room size, but use this to help with subwoofer choice. ie no point getting a small sub ie BK Gemini in a large room

Any sub is bigger than one which doesn’t exist

I'll remember that when I'm moving my 70kg subs will make it lighter

OK cool, thanks. Are Sony AVRs good? I’ve been looking at the TA-AN1000. Generally I like Sony gear (that said TV this wil go with is is a Samsung S90C as I couldn’t bring myself to pay the additional Sony tax).

Room is 4.8mx6m. Sofa is about 4m from the TV.

Never owned Sony AVR

For that room size probably looking at one 12" ported box. Or if you want to go duals a couple of 10" ported boxes.

Yeah, packet of crisps, it weights 16 kg or so, and despite your constant rhetoric against Sonos products it sounds really good, which the reviews agree with.

Yet you don't hear me whining about not believing you have a M3.

Grow up.
What does that have to do with the price of fish?

As I said the last time you mentioned something similar, the key difference is I've met people on this forum, in my M3. And I don't go posting in other car marque threads saying their chosen brand is trash without ever trying said brand.

People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones

Edit, found the post lol.
