Now that we are allowed to discuss JB on here, I thought I would share one of the best sources of JB info I have.
His YOUTUBE name is Dinozambas or D7 and his channel has helped thousands if not millions of people over the years. Ive been using his help for about 2 years now.
If anything new is out D7 is right on it, testing and uploading a walkthrough videio for all to see, he is 100% legit and very very helpful.
Checkout his channel

I have to say i love all the videos about how to do the new jailbreak hehe.

Go to this website and slide.

Though people manage to make 5 minute videos :o

thanks for the link.

can i ask a question before i actually research jailbreak.

what does it actually do when you jailbreak a iphone ?

what other options can the iphone do when it is jailbroken ?

Well your get one more icon on your springboard (desktop looking thing :p) called Cydia. Its pretty much another AppStore. On there you can download various things to customise your iPhone. From having a theme and changing icons on the springboard to using backgrounder to multitask instead of apples way in iOS4 (backgrounder is better in my opinion.) There is 1000's and 1000's of applications and things you can download. I only have a few so far which are listed here

put it this way
without jailbreak 3G users were unable to record video, as soon as you jailbroke there ws a video recording app for FREE, a year later apple let the unjailbroke 3G users have access to video recording apps on the app store for 59p+ which were nowere near as good as the free one we had a year ago !! lol
also
Multitasking has been out on jailbreak scene for 18 months, and the jailbroke version works better ( for me ) than the new OS4 multitasking
its like apple play catchup all the time with the jailbreak developers, yet when they come up with the app its like 1 year - 18 month late lol as we all have it, and running better than what apple have produced.
there are so so so many good apps for jailbroke apples, it opens a whole new world to your device, app, customisation, extra settings the list goes on
get it JB and enjoy !!!

as i understand it is better to jailbreak your phone than having it as it came out of the box from what people have said on here.

so after looking about i am going to jailbreak it but there is to many people on the web saying this is the best one.

what do you lot use to jailbreak your iphone ?

watch D7's tutorial, he explains everything
or
read the documentation on the jailbreakme site

thanks for that.

ill let you know if im a idiot of not :D

do i have to save everything on my phone before i continue ?

will i lose my contacts ?

just a bit worried as to what can happen.
As far as I'm aware no. Ages ago devices had to be restored to factory settings before jailbreaking but now its different. So 99.9% it won't :)

http://www.jailbreakme.com/faq.html Also that and the video :)

THE OPTIONS ARE ENDLESS, jailbreak is the win. you can install any app and just get so much more out of your phone.

Mines JB on 4.0.

If I were to to JB 4.0.1 should I update in itunes or restore?

Bare in mind I would like to keep wifi passwords messages etc.

WOW! Jailbreaking has come on along way since I last did it which was around 9-12months ago now. This was just so easy!
Indeed. My 1st gen one was like the above. This new jailbreak is the first of its kind as you don't need a PC. Its also fairly quick, though they were having server problems when it first came out.

I would think you could just update in iTunes but I'm really not to sure so don't take my word ;)

So guys..

With all the positives of JB.... What are the negatives????

I really like the reliability of the normal OS and it does every thing I need... Do I really need facetime over 3G (prob not) etc... I can see the advantages to having it previously with the multitasking "before its time" etc... So, could any one answer the question above!

Edit... When people say you can install any app... I can install any app at the moment (within reason of course) but are there any "reasons" with the JB phone

Easily the new one

Go to http://www.jailbreakme.com/ on your iPhone (safari) and well your an idiot if you can't figure it out from there :D

I still can't believe how easy this is...

Literally go onto that website on your iPhone - Slide to Jailbreak - It downloads, installs and you're jailbroken within 2-3 minutes!

It doesn't even need to restart your phone - you literally visit the site, go back to your dashboard and Cydia is right there :p

Almost scary that you can do this on Safari

I have not had any negatives myself. Only thing was with one jailbreak for my ipod touch (3g) the jailbreak was tethered meaning every time the device shutdown for whatever reason i would have to plug it into my computer again to jailbreak.
Otherwise umm..? It voids warranty but you can just restore anyway.

Slightly confused about the last bit of what you are saying about any app. Cydia store has applications which get denied by apple on the app store for different reasons. So without jailbreaking you couldn't get these.

Indeed. I'm sure apple stores and the purple shop will be blocking the website on their router settings or whatever otherwise people will be going into the store and jailbreaking the devices.
