A return to form: Say hello to Banana MK2, the Italian Prancing Horse (Ferrari 458 Italia)

Wowsers you are obviously capable and have the tools and space do it yourself.

That age now how many other little seals are starting to perish for more big bills.

Don’t be silly, it’s a DCT box not quite as simple as just opening it up. Even local Ferrari specialist won’t touch the car and he is an ex master tech who setup by himself. In his words dealers spend a lot of money training one member of staff up and at that one one per dealer, some dealers don’t have someone qualified and have to pass to another dealer. Also lots of specialist tools and computers needed as well. Impossible to DIY at home no matter how competent you are.

@Gibbo is it a common fault or just one of those things?

Guy in our 458 group had a similar failure, maybe same on a 2012 car with 19000 miles, his bill was £6000 from Ferrari. Which is better than 11k

The general consensus seems it happens but it’s rare, maybe this is down to using the car and it’s worn out and is maybe something many owners will face or just unlucky. I’ve done 26,000 miles and a few track days so maybe expected at least it did it after parking and not during driving.

I know it's all academic now but why on earth would a warranty not cover an oil leak? Surely that's exactly the kind of issue it should be covering?

Agreed but read the small print and it’s not covered and is why many including myself self insure as the warranty is like £3000 per year now and covers very little.

Hi there

Did not want to bother with Ricky at RE, some people don't speak so highly of them, also and as he has never done a Ferrari DCT I don't fancy been the guinea pig with such expensive car.

Rang around a few dealers today, one came back with £6900, much better.

Another dealer came back to me as they do a lot of work on Challenge cars and know the parts are the same, as such they can get just the replacement seals which cost around £20 instead of having to buy a new rear casing which is £3300 plus VAT. As such their estimated repair bill is circa £4000, much better, they have knocked £30 per hour of the labour rate to help out, so they shall be collecting the car in a couple of weeks once their covered transporter is free. Cracking service so far, whilst it is in I've requested they change the half shaft differential output seals as drivers had a minor weep and the car will be getting all fresh fluids whilst in their care. No idea when it will be ready, as they are doing me a favour I've informed them there is no rush on getting car back.

Kind of glad I have been driving the car through colder months, otherwise this could have happened during Summer and ruined road trips I have planned.

NO,NO,NO

Not thinking about how much I've lost on my 21plate M5 Comp..............
At least i can use it when it rains..... :D

458 has been driven all year round and still is, I enjoy it in the rain because skidz. :D

Not nice to get a big bill like that but look at it this way; in the 3 years you've had that car it's lost nothing in value and cost you almost nothing in servicing and repair costs. Think about how much someone who buys a new 5-series BMW loses in 3 years of ownership. Probably a lot more than the Fezza has cost you.

True, its 4 years now too.

Yeah but its started to disintegrate now.. That road grit really doesn't like Italian Beauties.

To be fair when I was driving it last week the roads round here had not been gritted for sometime due to the rather humid temperatures and hence me driving it.

Once the gritter comes out the cars stay in the garage.

Hi there

The car has been collected today by Stratstone Ferrari, they have collected for free so great service by them so far. Car started and drove fine onto the trailer whilst dropping more oil, still no error lights or weird noises:

Now fingers crossed the bill is not too insane, I am having them change the output seals on the half shafts as well as drivers side is weeping.

To brighten the mood a photo collection I was sent from a meet last year in the car. :)

Ferrari have started work on the car this week, they sent me some images of the car dismantled:

Good to see there is still oil coming out of it, had no news other than photos so guessing its come apart OK and next step is to rebuild the gearbox, not sure if Ferrari will send images of that as I know they won't release images of the engines on site. Will have to wait and see but thought some may appreciate what it is like to see one in pieces.

It's fascinating how low the engine is in the chassis.

Well for something that weighs circa 1500kg it is still easily the best handling beyond the limit I've driven and owned, the Mclaren has superior steering feel though by some margin.

Next best was then the Boxster Spyder and then your heading down towards the likes of a Caterham.

Fingers crossed they find no further gremlins inside the gear box and its back on the road next week fingers crossed. :)

So another update:

Gearbox needs a new casing as it has wear, rest of gearbox is fine no signs of damage.

Also having them change all the sensors whilst it’s open and also changing both driveshaft seals as one was weaping.

Awaiting parts now and hopefully be finished next week with a bill of £8600 for all the work, not great but could have been worse. Just looking forward to getting it back.

Hi there

So I had this pain early this morning:

All in all it could have been worse, should a gearbox be failing on a car with 26,000 miles, absolutely not! However that is supercar life and you should always have at least 10-20% of the cars value in preparation for repairs. Have Stratstone Ferrari Manchester been good? YES, a really high level of service and willingness to help, they did the rear casing at cost (the cost to dealership) and reduced the labour rate, so all in all have save me close to £2000 of the bill for been a repeat customer. They also changed the differential seals as requested whilst the gearbox was out and noticed the car was getting intermittent AVH warnings, something I've seen so a new brake pedal switch was installed considering its an inexpensive part.

The car gets delivered tomorrow back to me. :)

I've kept the casing as a momento of the 8k bill, will maybe turn it into a table or hang it of a wall. :D

Grabbed some photos before setting off for home:

Looking forward to getting the car back tomorrow and driving it. :)
