I'm with you in general, but you really need to understand that the OT wasn't included as a "marketing excercise". The Jews get very pent up about the fact that it's even called the OT, as it implies that it's not complete which they think it is (don't acknowledge the NT as being even half as important). Anyways, the OT really did come first, and has been acknowledged and around for a lot longer than the NT. That said, the OT did come about from a bunch of people sitting down and deciding which books should end up in the final version. A lot of stuff got left out, and a lot of stuff was put in for less good reasons than the other stuff.
Of course it's contradictory, it's a narration of what happened written by man, in most cases a long time after. And it's really not all meant to be taken word-for-word literally.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a big fan of what religion has done to our planet and its people, but lets not get too carried away.
