I agree with most of what you say except the 7 weeks thing. While the brain has started to develop, brain activity isn't present until the 13th/14th week, basically the end of the first trimester, start of the 2nd. At this point, there's a heart beat, many organs are functional, lungs are starting to develop, limbs are formed, the baby even starts to suck its own thumbs.

Yeah, that seems more like a sensible line in the sand, the sort of thing that Roe v Wade prevented. Lots of European countries go for limits of around that length of time for regular abortions.

I'm surprised that this step back was allowed under the Biden presidency. Under Trump, yes, but under Biden?
This is the supreme court, it's not controlled by the current president and is meant to act independently based entirely on the reading of the law.

It's arguably biased just now as Rai200 has said, however for decades the Roe V Wade decision has been contentious, even Democrat justices have commented on it being on unsteady ground before. Which is why many states had safeguards in place for it's removal to ensure the right to abortion in their states.

Personally I think the UK and most EU countries have a decent balance on the pro-life/pro-abortion stance. The US is incredibly binary though like much of their politics currently.

The POTUS doesn't have the authority to veto the USA Supreme Court on constitutional matters. Very deliberately so. The USA was deliberately set up to try to avoid having a president become a dictator, so there are so clear delineations of power.

This ruling puts law that had been decreed by an unelected body of 9 political appointees back into the hands of the elected representatives of the people. Whether that's a step forward or a step back depends on how you prefer your country to be governed and whether or not you agree with the ruling unelected body. Legally speaking, it would be better to have the constitution amended rather than just pretending it already has been because an unelected body of 9 political appointees decreed that it was (even though it wasn't).

It's amazing to see the general depth of feeling in the UK media and social media about this when we have our own shameful situation in NI that gets completely ignored.

possibly I am wrong but I would have agreed with you a few years back but wasnt NI bought into line with the rest of the UK in 2020ish?
No, the UK government continues it's battle to drag them into the 21st Century.

Well the ROI also has problems with their system, many women failing to get in the 12 week period due to doctors approvals etc., NI abortion is now decriminalised, clinics operate but under severe opprobrium in many instances.

Like many things, it just takes religion to **** things up.

That's fine, we need to come up with a universal consensus when the brain starts firing and come up with a compromise of about 10-12 weeks being the limit

A system that fails in practice because it hands vast amounts of lasting power to whichever president has the most supreme Court justices die during their term.

The speech from one of those mental Republican congresswoman saying what a victory this is for white life.....

They'll start wearing their klan robes in public soon.

Yes, although I don't see any relevance with the ROI. The point I'm making is that there are areas of the UK that are backward in terms of women's health and I find it disappointing that people can get so animated about other countries when their own country doesn't have it's house in order. It feels very hypocritical.

Just my opinion, and it's more an observation than a criticism of any particular individual. :)
