Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2011, Yas Marina Circuit - Race 18/19

They need to get rid of the mickey mouse chicanes. Turns 5 and 6 need to go and the track should go straight into the hairpin. Turn 12 and 13 need to go, with turn 11 made much tighter. And turn 17 needs to be tighter to make more of a braking zone.

Was anyone else as amazed as I was at the phenomenal lead Vettel instantly put on Hamilton ?

That can't be right ?

Now you mention it...you are right.
Basically, in the space of 2 corners, he appeared to have built up a decent lead.

I remember that when Vettel went off, it took almost 1 second for Hamilton to pass him.

You've watched the rest of the season, right? This is how Vettel wins races. He puts it on pole, and then pulls out a lead on the first 2 laps. His lead up untill the puncture was spot on for someone who had made a good start and took the faster wider racing line into turn 1 while the guy in second took the slower tighter line.

Had he not had a puncture he would have had a 3 second lead after 2 laps, and never been seen again for the whole race.

That's just how he rolls.

Completely agree. The problem with the T7 hairpin is that there is literally zero run-off tarmac, you're straight into the grand stand, which is why the 5-6 chicane is there to slow the cars down.

I don't think they could change that part as to give enough run-off for the speed of the cars, they'd have to move the hairpin back to where the chicane is, which would make the grandstand peetty redundant.

It's a ****-poor design, which from what Coulthard said in commentary about Tilke saying someone else deisgned the pit-out tunnel, Tilke is trying to shirk responsibility for it.

Yeh turns 5, 6 and 7 are just shocking design. Completely ruins any chance of having overtaking there, but due to the grandstand design they can't remove 5 and 6.
What they should have done is had a raised grandstand like at turn 8, with the runoff going underneath...

Its all form over function. They designed the track to look good on TV and to fans at the track, and then thought about the layout later.

Like the random narrowing of the track into turn 8. Thats because after building the grandstand they realised that with the angle of the seats, people at the top couldn't see the edge of the track at the bottom, so they just moved the edge of the track in a few meters.

I think it probably was contact with the kerb that caused it. He really rode it hard, and if he caught the kerb wrongly, it could have easily just pushed the bead of the tyre of the rim. Easy enough to do. That would result in sudden deflation.

Nathan, they may have been given in error, in your opinion, but the Stewards' who have more footage than any of us ever get to see, are whose opinion counts.

Those stats show that only Maldonado has been involved in more infringements than Hamilton. Hamilton should be compared with Alonso, Button and Vettel...not Maldonado.

Half of Lewis' penalties were given in error anyway. Remember Monaco?

Until F1 has stewards that oversee every single race it is a meaningless statistic.

Very true

You do know that two of the stewards at each race have nothing to do with F1 and are different each year.
The FIA have 3 I think or it could be 4

...and they also have an experienced, former driver, advising them. Unless of course you feel that the likes of D.Hill, N.Mansell, J.Herbert, D.Warwick are basically idiots who have no idea about F1?

A lot of people berate football referees - mainly because spectators have the benefit of an action replay and therefore have more information than the referee did (when he made the decision); but in F1, it is the reverse - the stewards have more information than the spectators. Things that we don't see or know, the Stewards, have full knowledge about.

If I had to blindly back a decision made by Deuse, NathanE or the Stewards, I would pick the Stewards - not because I have anything against the former 2, but because the Stewards have more information than the former 2.
