Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2012, Yas Marina - Race 18/20

Of course he is, he knows very well how popular his dead pan answers have become and it's a far cry from how he was at Mclaren or even Ferrari. He's obviously not the only guy with a different public front but he knows excatly what he's doing.

It is Kimi mania, you only had to hear the crowd, everyone I know now loves the guy. Where before he was ultra fast but just a Grey boring Mclaren reboot/replug in of Mika.

He's becoming massively popular.

Haha I went Spa this year and went the pitwalk on Thursday. Kimi appeared and everyone just charged with loads of cries of Kimi! Kimi ! so you might have a point !

Strange how everyone was calm when it was just Grosjean signing autographs at first :D

The funny thing in all of this...
The Mclarens can ironically help Alonso, Mclaren maintains that their form will remain for the next 2 races. If that is the case that will be absolutely pivotal in keeping Alonsos championship hopes alive.

The thing is, McLaren are going to do everything they can to get both drivers on the podium in order to beat Ferrari in the WCC, so it's not as simple as them just holding up Vettel and letting Alonso win.

I think he was more meaning McLaren win the race which helps Alonso if Seb is not winning. But Lewis has been saying how Alonso deserves the title so maybe he will like to help out :D

Be funny if he did help him out with their history. Maybe he is thinking, 2nd driver at Ferrari in 2015 if all goes wrong wouldn't be bad :p

Exactly this.

It is funny :) Ironically I think both drivers now have a certain level of good respect for each other.

Ooh look, let us all hate on a new winner :)

Oh do grow up, it's people like you that ruin these threads. For some reason you either have to be 100% for a driver and not see any tiny negative or you are a hater. Not just for Kimi but any of the top drivers.

I've already said in this thread and many of the others that you hadn't bothered shouting for kimi in, that I love the guy but no I need to get a tattoo or something? My comments where not even hating the guy, just that he knows what he's doing and he does clearly.

I have no idea why on here you have to be either 100% a fanboy or 100% a hater and there's no middle ground what so ever

No, you were making out he has suddenly created a persona when if you have actually followed F1 a long time you'd know his persona has always been like that. Do I need to start digging out old youtube clips of him in the early 2000's to prove?

Totally different!

He has said it himself time again, he's a normal person who has fun and acts normally when not in work but when he is working he slips into serious mode. I get where he's coming from that he slips into work mode. I really don't think he's doing it to act up to the public, I'm sure he actually doesn't care what the public think :p

Totally different!

What, I'm not talking about his monotone delivery with his limited use of the english language. I'm talking about the persona he's currently creating where he gives off a vibe that he doesn't care about podiums, or that he made out in the interview with DC that the win was just a shrug of the shoulders.

He knows that attitude is becoming very very popular. Perhaps Mclaren kept him on a tighter leash, who knows but they don't seem the same people are picking up points and a win.

Either way Mclaren have ****ed up big time not getting him back. Maybe that attitude of not giving a toss would put a few people off?

To me if he really didn't care that much, as much as this vibe he's giving off then he would have stayed doing other things and not bothered coming back to F1.

The whole reason he has that attitude is because he hates the media and just wants to race. One of the reason he left McLaren is because of the media requirements. I imagine Lotus let him do what he wants most of the year.

Kimi has been quite open about the fact that all he is interested in is racing, and nothing else. I expect his dream role would be to turn up 5 minutes before the race, drive, and then jump out of the car and go home.

His attitude is not one that's been developed for the media, its one that has been developed because of the media.

I see what you mean although I have to agree with Skeeter and that's why I like the guy so much. He isn't really into the whole panto side of it, he kinda snubs it and therefore I respect him that he refuses to be a puppet. Lotus have appeared to let him do what he wishes, and rightfully so, the guy has worked Lotus to a great position. I don't see him as arrogant, just honest and true.

Fair enough, well put. I still think that if all he cared about was the racing then he would atleast be happy when he won, rather than making out it's no more relevant than ordering fish and chips for tea :D

Maybe that's just how he really is but for me it's a difference from before where he celebrated his wins/good drives as you would expect of someone who just loves racing. :D

I don't see him as arrogant at all, which leads me to my next question. What has Kimi done differently here with regards the press/media that Villeneuve did wrong.

Jacques was equally as open about his hatred of PR and media and the public hated that. Said he was arrogant and should be promoting the sport that made him a lot of money. Is Kimi being forgiven because of this wrongly perceived lack of communication skills?

Lastly, something I've been looking at this year regards Kimi's performances. Especially qualifying. Has Kimi had a stunning season or would a driver say Vettel, Hamilton, Alonso or even a driver like Button and Webber got more than one win out of that car this season? Especially the top first three as they would be far more likely to get better grid slots than Kimi has managed. Of course this is his first year back but no one gets cut slack in F1 (except MS) ;)

I guess we won't know until he get's paired with someone who can finish races more often ;)

According to the sun. Mclarens failures and pit mess ups have cost Hamilton 126 points and button 30 points. (providing they finished in the position they were in when they had the problem)

That's a lot of points.

I imagine Frank is already writing to the sun to dispute their points/findings ;)

Just joking Frank :p

Villeneuve is FRENCH-Canadian - enough said :p

As for comparable performances, I guess we'll never really know. For me I think the championship standings say it all. The two better drivers are 1st and 2nd, there is no doubting that, and Kimi has a deserved 3rd. He is the only driver who has completed every single racing lap this season and his awareness during the race is excellent, like his race place, pace and progress. Boullier reckons he will be better next year, it all looks good for Lotus.

People like Hamilton, Webber and Button, although having some bad luck with their cars, have also made some very bad decisions that have put them out too. Kimi has consistently been in points hence his 3rd place.
