I expect him to talk about going for the win but actually leaving Lewis to drive off into the sunset whilst he drives around in second with the engine at 90%. What would you do?? I'd take second to be honest. Especially if i knew this was my best ever chance of getting a title.

It's the way it's been since time began. The driver with everything to lose just does what's needed, stays out of trouble and tries to bring the car home. There won't be many exceptions to that in F1 history.

It's the same old saying: win at the slowest possible speed. Only in this case it's a title rather than a race that's up for grabs.

Rosberg's been just doing enough since Hamilton's ICE failure at Sepang, and it could yet cost him dearly.

I guess it will be more interesting if Rosberg qualifies first and has Hamilton chasing him trying to get past. What does he do then? Does he fight or just let Hamilton go?

edit: I don't think Rosberg would be stupid enough to tangle with him... :o But just letting him past may look a bit weak?

Slightly OT but interesting quote I just read:

My favourite team-mate of all time…
Is Rubens Barrichello. We spent four years together and we went through some very difficult times together. I mean, at one point my team didn’t exist anymore, at the end of 2008. But in 2009 we drove together at Brawn and that was a special time. And he was also the best team-mate in terms of setting up a car. Fernando is good, but Rubens was at another level. Let me put it this way, you can see why Michael Schumacher wanted him as his team-mate for so long.”

Can you imagine how paranoid Rosberg is going to be as he lines up on the grid.

Every subtle noise, creak, groan and bump is going to put him on edge. I bet it will be intense inside that helmet until he's coming up to the final corner.

I think he'll be more scared of a first corner coming together than a mechanical issue, especially if he's second on the grid with the Red Bulls on the second row.

Say there was a coming together and Rosberg comes out of the first corner mid pack, will anyone except maybe Verstappen actually defend against him regaining position?

I'm beginning to think a mechanical issue or crash is Hamilton's only hope. :(

Definitely, but you'll have to imagine he'll be frantically radioing the team every time so much as his chair squeaks :D

for anyone saying malaysia is where this title fight was lost for hamilton when he had his engine blow out due to reliability problems... dont forget that rosberg was running second until T1 and got hit by vettel which resulted in him being plum last within 30 seconds of the start of the race.

i had totally forgotten about that until now as the full race replay is on sky f1 right now.

I think if Rosberg is under threat from third, they'll give Lewis the hurry up so they can finish with a 1-2. Ultimately Mercedes don't care who wins, so long as they finish in the best possible positions.

It'll be interesting if Lewis or Nico deny that type of order though. I for one would like a bit of spice rather than a boring lights to flag procession.

If Hamilton leads he needs to back the cars behind so there is racing. Which gives RB the chance to take nico.
I can't see him driving off in to the distance. It's nico's WDC to lose, but I think he will play safe.

That was 1997, infamous because M. Schumacher tried ramming Villeneueve at Jerez to win the title ala Adelaide '94 only he failed this time.
1996 both in Williams' both only title contenders....

He said both drivers winning titles in the same car. Not when they were apart or one had left but together. Like Senna and Prost did. 1996 Jacques and Hill weren't champions one was then Hill left. If Rosberg does it then as he stated it will be the first time since Senna and Prost both drivers have won a title in the team while together.

If he just meany both drivers being title contenders in the same car he could have listed about 10+ pairings.:D

But it was where it was lost?! He would've been leading the championship had he gone on to win that race rather than blow up... I'm sure given the choice Lewis would've rather drop to the back and work his way through rather than DNF. They both had misfortune but Lewis' cost him far more.

It'd be poetic if Hamilton does back him up but Rosberg still overtakes him!

lolwhat?

I cant even remember an occasion when Lewis Hamilton was overtaken legititmatly by Rosberg....

I have my fingers and toes crossed for some Turn1 smashing. What is this track like for Turn 1 smashes?

Literally PRAYING for someone to take Rosberg out, so we can at least have some semblence of drama, even if he does have to overtake the field to win the WDC. Something, anything, other than a dreary cruise home to 2nd.

His engine is old, so maybe it will blow up... fingers crossed. Jesus, even a puncture would be something at least.

Realistically, only retirement will guarantee anything changes.

Assuming those against Rosberg are praying for a T1 incident, then you have to remember that any significant impact at T1 is going to result in a SC and the possibility in Hamilton getting wiped out too.

Also, if Ves et al. overcook T1 and punt Rosberg off, wouldn't he just steer in to Ham anyway? I don't want to think about that but it's possible we could see the situation where the championship is decided at T1. We would then be in a mess where the FIA would need to prove he did it deliberately and ultimately exclude him from the WDC (assuming Ham also retires) because he'd still have more WDC points. Also, the entire race will be ruined by speculation... eugh :(

A minor spin where he ends up at the back is just going to mean he'll have to come back through the pack with the engine turned up. P4 should be easy.

A puncture is no guarantee he'll finish outside the top 4 either. Assuming the Merc can get good tyre life he may just whack on a set of the hardest compound and go for the 1 stop. The way Ferrari and Williams have shot themselves in the foot with their strategy this year that's a top 6 finish in the bag. Also consider the double effect DRS zone and that he'll be in the best car...

I wouldn't hold your breath.
