Accelerator stuck @ 135mph

How many ABS cars do you know of that have brake servos these days?

With the ignition off the brakes are not nearly as good as with the engine on, and require a lot of pressure...

However, thats what I would have done.. ignition off and brake onto hard shoulder...

Better without power than flat out...

Howcome?. If this is the case then why shouldn't you tow an auto?

im not sure what damage happens if you tow an auto, but i do know that you can turn the engine off and freewheel without the wheels locking up. it doesnt engine brake or anything.

You don't lose brakes if the engine is turned off.

Thankyou, I have just been thinking this for the whole post! You most certainly don't loose servo power when the engine is off *if the car is in gear*.

Engine will still be turning and creating vacume.

Last year while driving 'quickly' up the A1(M) in my ABS/PAS Vectra I had a total EMU failure == Engine died. I pulled over onto the hard shoulder and stopped my car.

End of story :)

Yes you do.
no you don't, they just take more pressure from your foot to make them work
same with the steering with no pas, it still works just not as well
they both have to work without there assistances for safety.
no car manufacturer would be able to sell a car that if the pas or the brake servo failed you had no steering or brakes

Another classic thread !

Half the people who posted on the first page obviously didn't read all the article and made themselves look silly by posting stuff like "Why didn't he put it into neutral"

Other people are debating (still) whether or not the brakes and/or steering work with the engine off.
The rest of you are questioning the capability of a 318 doing 135mph.

YET – you all seem to know exactly what he should have done

More likely the media has hyped the top speed reached – I just heard on Radio One "that the car was doing up to 150mph"

seems like very little people have read the story....

'why didn't he put it in neutral,' why didn't he put on the brakes,'he should have got done for using his phone'

Because the gears were jammed, why dont people read the full article...

Damn what an unlucky guy, not only does his throttle jam open but his gearbox locks and his brakes fail.

What a staggering co-incidence. Obviously the chances of him just being an inept nutter with no idea what to do is out of the question..

Of course I'm sure everybody here would have reacted perfectly and wouldn't have been scared....

I had this once approaching a roundabout so with about 5 seconds notice I tried the brakes and they couldnt slow the car so I turned off the ignition. Think I tried to put it into neutral but theres no limiter and that would have seriously wrecked the engine. The throttle control had something stuck in there as I remember, it was a 200 quid car.

A trucker did this once, didnt hear much after except he was known as a bit of an attention seeker.

Also my old landlord used to switch the engine off for 5 minutes on big mountain roads, the brake vacumm works fine for a limited application (even after 5 mins of no engine). He held down the clutch and kept the ignition on, any problem just drop the clutch and engine is back. Still mad I know

Not cynical, the story makes no sense. What he did was dangerous
Im sorry but after hearing his defense in the audio i really feel for the guy, and i think everyone who really criticises him to the extent a few people have in here really need to get out from behind there keyboards.

I see no reason not to believe him, maybe im a fool, iv been wrong before and i will gladly turn round and say you guys are right if its found the guys lieing or something.

I cant hear the audio bbc thing because it crashes firefox and fails in IE. realplayer streaming crapness I think
