The torque convertor, by virtue of the braking effect the engine will place on it relative to the rest of the drivetrain. There's no clutch in an auto and the wheels are never fully disconnected from the engine. This is why you shouldn't tow autos more than a short distance at a low speed.

it wont have any braking effect.

What a fool hes going to look when it turns out that it was his floormat holding the accelerator down!
Had that happen before in my Shogun and took me a while to figure out whta was causing it!

I'm really surprised the brakes couldn't bring it to a stop - even in first gear, accelerator to the floor theres no way the brakes on my car won't bring it to a rapid halt. I've tried it for various reasons in the past, call it brake testing :)

Sure, stampiing on the brakes at 120mph will create some serious heat but it shouldn't be long till the speed drops as it will be in 5th gear and there will be a good cooling effect from the airflow. Eventually, fried brakes or not, I would have expected it to come to a halt and stall.

As for turning off the the engine locking the rear wheels, I'd expect the autobox to allow some sort of freewheeling effect, what would happen in event of a breakdown, cambelt failure, or running out of petrol?

1st gear? He was going '135mph', that' 5th :| Massive difference.

Yes you do.

As I've said several times, you will have enough boost left in the brake system to stop the car. After that you will still have brakes, but they won't be nearly as powerful as they would when fully functioning.

Didnt realise Autos had 5 gears.

YOU DONT LOSE BRAKES WITH THE ENGINE OFF!!!

Why wouldn't an automatic have 5 gears tell me that? Sure you can't select up to 5 normally...

With the engine off the brake servo thing doesn't work and then brakes don't work without it.

I've gone down a slope when my car wouldn't start so I had to go down a slight hill and put it in a parking space but couldn't brake because the engine wouldn't start so had to use handbrake instead.

It says in the report that he was using the brakes to slow him to 70mph then the brakes cooked themselves....thats with the engine on!

Most automatics from around 98 were 4 speed.

This is completely false.

rofl the brakes DO work without it, the pedal has less travel and is harder to press thats all.

Well if they managed to cook themselves, then they were clearly working.

If he wasn't such a twit, he wouldn't have cooked them in the first place.

Hmm, i've only experienced this once, you could be right actually just thinking about it.

When I couldn't start the engine I had to manouver it quite a bit of get it into a space so needed to press the brakes a few times...

So you're saying if you press the brakes once and hold them they're going to work? If so, i'm sorry.

That's becauase the engine was on mate ;)

My brothers friend crashed in his BMW Compact after the cruise control wouldn't disengage. He was travelling on a toll road in France and actually smashed through a barrier at a toll booth.

I am not sure what is happeninig with his case, but the last I heard BMW were refusing for him to see their investigation report into his car as it was 'confidential'!

I wonder what he might make of this story?

I was once in a BMW M3 when I was little and the cruise control cut in and the car kept accelerating but for the life of me I can't remember how she stopped it from happening.
