Acer 8371/3810 Owners Thread

Any one else had a problem with the screen on this? Mines has just stopped working out of the blue and doesnt come on either in battery or plugged in. I can hear windows starting up and the startup sound coming on but the screen is still as black as the night.

Very dissapointed if it's broken after 2 months.

I've been having a screen issue where sometimes it will just go black, although its more like it switched itself off, it sorts itself if I restart but it annoying, seems to be most common on startup or if I plug in a USB device (Modem or Pen Drive) I'd like to hope theres not a hardware fault and its driver or graphics driver related but I'm a bit concerned about it.

well i purchased one from them and all seems good, arrived quickly and working.
The first delivery was fine, but any after-sales was the issue...
What is wrong with yours, and how long have you had it?
Mine was 29 days old, and the backlight just died. Probably the inverter.

Is the backlight off, or is the screen off? You should be able to see it under a bright light.

Don't think its been mentioned here yet but by using Throttlestop on my 3810TG I can lock both my cores to a *8 multiplier (from maximum of *7) and get the cpu speed up to a stable 2ghz with the help of the overclock tool mentioned earlier in this thread.

What you need to do is to is used a patched bios that enables the extra power options and then disable P-States. Then set Windows power options to Maximum Performance and then in advanced settings set Both Minimum Processor States to 100%. Load Throttlestop and tick Set Multiplier and raise it to the Maximum (*8 for my 3810TG), then check the EIST box and press Turn On. Finally right click to access the hidden menu (It's not too hard to find where you have to right click, it's just to the right on the EIST but to the left the Monitoring table) and select Enable Dual IDA.

Hope this is of use to some of you.

Hey everyone, Sorry i've been away.

If people are still interested in a modded bios for vista please let me know and I'll do it ??

ALSO if anyone is interested in one of these amazing laptops, there seems to be 2 of them on Ebay for JUST £263.50 Including P+P which is an amazing price. Just put '8371G-944G32n' in the search box.

Although it is Seller refurbished and not much description but the part number LX.TTK0Z.001 shows it should have dedicated graphics and all that. Also you can always return if anythings not good.

Good bargain for someone considering it normally cost about £350 new.

Seems a good price however, checked some feedback and would be a little concerned on returning the product and being fobbed off.

My offer in truth would be £250 (anyone here dealt with the company)

In search of a laptop around £300-£350, looked at netbooks and in truth not enough power and a little to small and judging by some advice here over £200 for a netbook well.

Any advice greatly received.

Hi,

the modded bios is really great with the 3810. However, I've noticed that since I upgraded, there is a sound coming from the upper left side of the keyboard (which is where the fan is I guess). It sounds like the fan is going On and OFF changing within seconds and this gives you a kind of always up or down spinning noise of an otherwise silent notebook.
Moreover, when I put my hand on the fan, it feels like there IS SOMETIMES some air transportation going on even though I am at 51 degrees and I thought the fan would be completely off at this temp.
Is this behaviour normal with the 3810/8371 or how does yours sound?
Cheers playagiron

Hi,

That would be great, yes please - I have the integrated-graphics-only model, which seems to need a different mod from the discrete graphics model. I'd be intrigued to know if it's a known feature of the mod that the fan never seems to come on at all, even at 60 degrees - the machine is fine so far but I'm curious.

Many thanks in advance.

:( my screen still seems to be flickering.

AHH not happy bunny, if i send it off i bet i wont get it back for months!

EDIT: Doesnt seem to happen on full brightness, i really dont want to send it off so i might just put up with it always being on full brightness.

What are the chances its the screen inverter already going?

Funny thing is mine is away to ACER for exactly the same problem. I found it most noticeable just above the windows start button in anything white there was quite a disernable flicker. Acer arrange DHL to collect laptop so well soon find out what they replace.

Hiya - and welcome back ! ;)

I would really appreciate a BIOS which keeps Vista activated (SLIC thingy, I believe ?) - otherwise, the version you posted a while back was perfect :D
I liked being able to set the gfx in BIOS (ATi or onboard etc.) and all the extra gubbins opened up in BIOS, but found my stock Vista install became un-activated :(

TIA !

Well I've had my 8371 since November and it's been 99% awesome during that time. I've always got it on me while at work and travelling to places for meetings etc and I'm finding the size and weight of it very nice. It's not hurting my back at all which used to be quite a problem with my old Lenovo T42 :(

I've really gotten used to the keyboard now as I use it almost every day at work. Performance wise it's handled everything I've thrown at it, though lately I've only been developing and remote desktopping on it. It's still feels as fast as the day I installed W7 on the SSD :)

I've not overclocked it (still running at stock) and seem to average about 6 hours and upwards on battery with half screen brightness, wifi connected and Intel GPU enabled.

Couple of minor issues I've noticed, first of which is the switchable graphics. It's a nice feature having it auto switch when you plug it into the mains however this feature doesn't work if you plug it in before you're logged in. Like wise if you unplug it after the laptop is shut down it will boot up with the dedicated GPU enabled.

On a few occasions I've done one of the above and then not been able to switch it back to the integrated GPU and have had to reinstall the drivers for it. It's irritating but not the end of the world, I just need to remember to unplug it before logging off.

The other issue I've found is that just recently my wifi card (Intel 5300 abgn) doesn't appear to be detected on startup sometimes and the only fix is to either restart a few times or whip the keyboard off and just re-plug the card back in. Not sure why it's doing this all of a sudden? maybe the card is faulty? It hasn't done it for a week now so I'm hoping it was just a dodgy connection (or maybe the weather? lol)

All in all...a fantastic laptop and certainly worth more than we paid for it! I've been tempted to buy a 2nd SSD to put in the 2nd slot for a bit more storage as I only have a 64gb drive in it at the min but we'll see.

I'm sorry to hear a few people are having issues with the screen however, I hope you get it sorted.

+1 for an overall great experience with the 8371 - also had mine for a few months now.

Wierdly, I do get a 'fault' of kinds on web pages.....seems to manifest after plugging in the AC power (Graphics switchover ?)........any page with Flash objects or similar start to exhibit a flickering. Examples are the analogue clock on BBC website, the Match Centre on Liverpool FC's website and so on......everything is fine, then - after plugging in the AC power (and the susequent gfx switchover) the flickering starts. Reverting back to Intel gfx does not help !

I don't think it is dodgy hardware - i.e. booting up and selecting the ATi gfx from Windows and then firing up same pages shows no problems......

Muchos Strangos !
