Acer 8371/3810 Owners Thread

Thanks guys, i feel like such a fool when it comes to all this OC stuff(even though its not as complicated as most), ironic considering the name of the forum haha.

I'm the same mate, trust me. Most this oc'ing stuff goes over my head. :)

I didn't wanna risk frying the laptop lol so had to do a bit of reading around, but all in all it was fairly easy this time. Oh and I am not patient at all - I think when oc'ing you should increase in 5mhz increments and test each time. I went from 450 straight to 500 etc, found it takes too long going up in 5s :p

I got a bit confused with that afterburner, gave up haha.
I was changing the settings, then i would close it, open it up again and the settings have changed!

I also had a go with that furmark, but it wasnt displaying any information like temperature etc. :-\ eek

Gpu-z is quite good for keeping an eye on gfx card temps.

Expect it to hit high 80s though running the furmark stability test.

If i try it again ill download that, i was getting annoyed with it not keeping the settings i wanted so will leave it for now lol.

lol yeah it can get frustrating sometimes. You should be fine with the following:

Cpu-z
Prime95
CoreTemp
Msi afterburner
Gpu-z
Furmark

Had my 8371 since March, although I paid nigh on double what you guys paid - still worth it, it's a cracking laptop. I'm going to upgrade to a 500Gb Momentus XT when I get the cash to do so, only things I'd change on it would be nVidia graphics instead of ATi. ;)

I only use it for Skype, WoW, and watching videos, all of which it does fantastically.

How well does it run WoW? Looking for something to run WoW when I visit the inlaws. What sort of setting do oyu run and what sort of framerates are you getting? Do you have trouble with it in northrend or with the redone zones in the old kingdoms?

I was looking at a samsung r580 but thats still more than I'd like to spend, so if this laptop does play WoW ok it may be worth looking at.

Is there a 15" version available?

There is a 14 inch. The 4810TZG is pretty much identical to my 3810TZG except it has an optical drive and a 14inch screen. It's cheap too!!

I'm amazed at how much they are going for now. I am seriously considering getting another one!! :D

Did some benchmarking last night using MSI Kombustor, which is an MSI specific version of Furmark. Benchmark or Afterburner wasn't working properly though since the overclocking slider made absolutely no difference to the result each time.

Downloaded 3DMark2006 and ran at defaults getting 2664. Will try cpu and gpu overclocking runs on the 3810TZG and report back over the weekend.

Sounds about bang on. Oc'ing the cpu won't affect the 3dmark06 score at all, but oc'ing the 4330 should push that up to around 3200.

Might try with that GPU overclock again today, got the software etc, just hoping the settings save this time, which they wouldnt before!

Think I was having that problem aswel, I was clicking save but it went straight back to default. I cannot remember from the top of my head how I fixed it, but keep trying and check in 'settings' in afterburner.

I wonder if the GPU sensor reads high compared to the CPU. I was just running on batteries, on Intel graphics (as set via switchable graphics), and my CPU was in the mid 40s, and I switched to ATI to check the GPU temperature (gpuz can't see the ATI sensor when set to Intel). It was at 62c, despite not having been used at all (since graphics had been set to Intel). So, either the GPU sensor can give falsely high readings or it remains powered on (and hot) even when the switchable graphics are set to Intel.

I think I now have an explanation for the above, and it's not good news :(.

http://www.acer-userforum.de/aspire...-3810tg-standby-bug-hoher-stromverbrauch.html

It seems that this series of notebooks (8371, 3810, 4810 etc) has a bug with the switchable graphics in Windows 7, whereby both chips are powered up on resume from standby when running on Intel graphics on battery. This increases the power consumption dramatically (approximately double when idle, ~6mW to ~12mW, which I have verified on my 8371 using batterybar), and will also explain my high Radeon temperature after running on Intel.

To prevent both chips draining your battery when you resume from standby, you must manually press the powersmart button twice: first to select the Radeon, and then again to go back to the Intel. The Radeon will then be powered off and the power consumption will come back down. If that is too much trouble, your battery will probably last longer if you use the modded bios I linked to to run in single graphics mode (Intel or ATI only depending on your demands). I have set mine to Intel. Do not be alarmed when your notebook immediately powers down after changing the graphics settings in the BIOS!

There also seems to be the beginnings of a hacked together solution involving combining the Acer driver with a Dell driver (Borriss's last post here http://www.acer-userforum.de/aspire...810tg-standby-bug-hoher-stromverbrauch-2.html).

Note that the bug only seems to affect resume from standby on battery, so if you do not use standby you will not be affected.

PS I think I also found the original source for the overclocking tool, so we can thank daishf from here:

Would be interested in knowing current price on these laptops. And game performance. Not a heavy gamer but always nice to know.. COD4/6 for example?

It is still available @ £349.99 (likely a little less, as there is a 2.5% discount code out there) + delivery.
Afraid I have not tried any gaming, in benchmarking terms, but Oblivion seems happy to run on reasonable settings (not very scientific, I know !)
