Achievements - Do you care?

I dont mind them as a checklist of fun things to try that you may not normaly do as a normal play through of the game to show off on your friends list. But I do hate the online achivements that are totaly silly things that cant be achieved durring normal gameplay. And there are always issues/glitches with online achievements that sometimes require the correct time of day and even a specific weather pattern and maybe a bit of luck before they will unlock ;)

I do like to try and get Platinum rating on my PS3 games to show off, but I do get annoyed with some poorly thaught out online achivements that stops me getting it. ;)

I used to love them (if you look at my now retired XBL profile in my sig) but after a few years I grew to hate and despise them. Addicted to them and most people judge you based on that. When I left consoles permanently (besides Halo 4 maybe) at the start of this year, I was glad, I had no cheevs to **** me off. Sure you might get Steam Achievements and the such but I don't bother with them, my past addiction was with XBL Achievements :/

Sort of, because I want to beat my friends in the game. I will go after them if I am enjoying the game or they aren't too time consuming. On some games though it has made me play it longer like Fallout 3 for completing some side quests.

If they are something ridiculous then I won't bother, for example "Collect all 657 Skulls."

When the Xbox 360 first came out it was a novel idea, one I didn't mind so much when achievements had reasonable requirements. Too many games have very retarded requirements and I can't be bothered with them any more.

For example Mortal Kombat 9 has one that requires you to play each character for 24 hours. With like 30 characters in total its just ridiculous. Mass effect 3 has a 5000 kill achievement, after an insanity play through and about 10 hours on multilayer I was just over 2000. It put me off the games to be honest, more in principle than anything.

I remember back in the day when meeting certain requirements in a game actually unlocked an in-game item, new level, character etc. Now you get a stupid achievement and then you have to buy DLC for the extra content. ......street fighter 4 ring any bells - DLC costumes!!

I don't like the achievement culture in general, and that extends beyond Steam/GFWL type achievements to in-game achievements as well, even if they aren't labelled as such (for example in a game like GTA, collecting 100 packages or whatever). I never go for "100% completion" etc unless I can see it being fun.

One exception is where they are not massively tedius to achieve and have a tangible in-game reward, for example some of the Painkiller ones where you have to complete a level only using a specific weapon and get awarded a black tarot card.

It can be annoying seeing these spammy GFWL messages popup as well telling you that you've got 20G for getting through an alleyway without taking any damage.

To be fair there will be the odd one that suckers me in and I will go for if I think it might be fun to try, taking me out of my standard way of playing etc, I think there were some in Portal1/2 that I went for. But most games I don't even bother looking at the list of potential achievements, I just want to get in, do the main campaign / side missions, and get out.

edit: Looking back now I realise that when I was younger, I used to almost create 'achievement tasks' for myself. For example, completing Quake 2 on Hard+ skill level without using any powerups, BFG, or saving midlevel. Or winning the main tournament on a football game using the worst team (e.g. Qatar in FIFA International Soccer).
