Afghanistan - 20 years on

Anyone know where all the 5000 US & 600 UK troops intended to 'assist evacuation' and 'relocation' and 'provide logistical support' in Afghan actually are?

I assumed they were going to be guarding the embassies until they closed and then just keeping the airport safe to allow flights to continue. But it sounds like they never had any role on the civilian side of the airport (hence why it's rather out of control as per videos perhaps) and are either just holed up in a separate military area of the airport or guarding the embassies (although it sounds like essentially everyone has already left the US embassy now https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.th...-as-last-government-stronghold-in-north-falls) while they close up shop.

I guess they must mainly just be holed up in a separate area of the airport, which we've not seen much of so far. Or are they actuality at the airport perimeter or beyond?

Try not in the country yet.
Where are they going to land?

The UK troops are likely mainly at the Airport; probably also being used to help ferry UK nationals, etc from Central Kabul; there were pics from the MoD yesterday showing them on the ground.
I imagine the 6,000 US Troops are doing much the same; airport security and ferrying people from the Centre (not just the embassy); there's another 1,000 US Troops on their way likely from Kuwait.

Can one ask where the Arab league is during all of this?

Why didn't the leaders in Kabul make plans going back to last year to get assistance from friendly bordering countries.

They could have tried to at least partially fill the void left by the withdrawing US forces with local friendly armies , ask them to provide logistical and air support, even troops on the ground.

the Arab league are Arab and Middle Eastern, Afghanistan is in Asia.

why would other nations prop up a puppet government installed by the UK and US after they themselves abandoned them. This is all on the UK & US.

I'd argue that this is mostly on the USA and Biden rather than failings of Johnson or the UK government. Granted, there is the bigger issue of whether we should have been there in the first place etc. and of course we are still complicit, but just looking at the last few months, we as the UK had little choice in all of this once the US made their move.

Maybe we could have argued the point more with Biden, but I doubt they would have listened.

Ah OK, can see how actually moving round Kabul will be taking up a lot of manpower. I wonder if that's got much more difficult towards the end of the day as people mention roadblocks and presence on the street in parts of Kabul....

Sounds like the airport is in a right state though, so wonder how long it will take to evacuate all the people they've collected. Lots of flights during the night perhaps?

Can anyone confirm if the majority of people I'm Afghan actually want women to have education etc etc? Do they most agree with Taliban views?

USA gave them 88 billion USD in training and equipment and they got overthrown in a week.

Still yet to be substantiated, the US has a base just outside Doha, CIA and Doha Station are listed on different feeds... would be funny if it's true though :D

tbh... it's probably a bit overhyped - the people at that Doha station are likely those involved directly in the talks with the Taliban, who have a liaison office in Doha, it's not exactly blowing anyone's cover.

Probably also a fair few doing processing for visas/interpreters, etc.

Spotted this on Twitter; props to the Ambassador if true:

Agreed; I think some people have watched too many spy series; the comment about "US doesn't officially operate in Qatar" is also ludicrous; they share an Air Base with the Qatari's and the RAF and significant Command Facilities for US Central Command....

Won't the refugees become a problem in the Arab countries with them being only 1 border away?

Why would the Arab league want the taliban in power? Wouldn't it be in their vested interest to surround Iran with allies?

Gotta laugh your arse off at biden saying

"The Taliban is not the North Vietnamese army. They’re not remotely comparable in terms of capability. There’s going to be no circumstance where you see people being lifted off the roof of the embassy of the United States from Afghanistan."

No idea what the Arab league internal politics are just that this isn’t in the Arab leagues domain.

Doubt the Taliban and Iran are allies.
