Afghanistan - 20 years on

That **** eating grin and wisper speech Lost all respect for him I had utter utter scum bag.

And on googling for it it seems it isn't the first time.

Unless this is some deep fake stuff wtf!? At this creepy wisher speech thing? Especially about the she look 19 stuff!?

Won't the refugees become a problem in the Arab countries with them being only 1 border away?

Why would the Arab league want the taliban in power? Wouldn't it be in their vested interest to surround Iran with allies?

A large part of why things went to **** in Syria - they basically opened their doors to people displaced by conflict in surrounding nations and ended up with a mess of different people with wildly different ideologies, etc.

I don't believe it is deep fake - likewise I was on the fence with Biden not a big fan but willing to give him a chance until that speech - if he wasn't knowingly aware of the realities of what was going on (which makes his words insincere at best if not outright lies) that was a Trump level of failure as a president - there is no real good option here.

EDIT: For me though it is contrasted against some Twitter posters in Kabul, especially those who won't do well under the Taliban - up until 10 days ago they were full of hope for the future, now they are full of despair so for Biden to come out with that rubbish was just horrifying in contrast.

Art of the deal!

For anyone curious - as I saw a couple of people touching on it - an example of the route the US/UK is flying stuff in and out:

Doubt Pakistan would attempt to deny the use of their airspace though - as things are right now the fallout with the US would be immense.

Don't really care how messed up the retreat was as this was an inevitable outcome, i'm just glad that this arrogant adventure is over with.

While on the one hand I agree - on the other hand there is a horrific amount of misery, death and injustice to come from this - much of which will likely never make the news.

Short of committing inordinate amounts of long term commitment I'm not sure if the situation would have gone any other way but the nature of how this has gone down has ensured this outcome - to the point I'm not even sure it wasn't intentional. There is a lot the US could have done to leave with the Afghan government having an actual fighting chance :s

Feel sorry for all the females in general there, probally back to Taliban life, no equal rights, no education, married off before 16-years of age etc.

There is a really sad reuters article from 2017 that picks up on Taliban child marriages at 12-years old etc.
Child and forced marriage are outlawed but remain common in Afghanistan, particularly among poor families eager for dowries.

Half of all girls are married by the age of 15.

Among the most invisible victims are the wives of Islamist Taliban hardliners who, when in power, barred women from education and most work and ordered them to wear burqas outside the home, before being overthrown in 2001 by U.S.-led forces.

It is tragic - so many young people are probably going to end up taking their own lives in the coming days rather than face what they imagine the future is going to be.

The chickens are coming home to roost, everybody was just happy with Joe because he wasn't Trump but unfortunately he has his own skeletons and creepyness that everyone was warned about but everyone ignored, at least with Trump as vile a human being as he is, you know what you're getting with him

Joe could either start WW3 or allow Russia & China to do more landgrabs and expand their threat, you just don't know, probably because he doesn't know himself :D

I think that ripping the plaster off is the only reasonable action to take once the corruption had set in, maybe after seeing how life is without the Taliban might lay some seeds of hope, but for the most part those people are either already out of the country or will eventually find their way out as the fundamentalist oppression ramps up because Afghanistan is not a country, it's a disparate region that Britain/France arbitrarily imagined up as something that it was not so there's nothing to fight for.

Well it's not Biden's (or Trump's) fault that the Bush administration (or wider government) went into a country with a an objective and stayed there out of some vague attempt to plant 'democracy' when in reality it was mostly about keeping demand up for military contractors.

Biden has done what he should have, that it's a mess is not solely his fault as this is a result of multiple administrations worth of rot that has culminated in this embarrassing outcome. His great failing here is that he should have just been honest about the outcome, however I don't know whether he's even been given the information by the Pentagon/CIA without colourful representations of the facts, so being honest might not have been possible.

Nobody will care in a few months (weeks even), all that will matter is that we're finally extricating ourselves.

I have my doubts how long things would have held up any way but the way the US went about it the last few months literally minimised any chances. Given that and the involvement with some of the tribal militias, etc. it is hard to imagine this isn't what the US wanted all along :( that and they probably need to pull out of some of these situations to be able to focus and strengthen their military capabilities against other threats.

US mobilizing way more C17s tonight and looks like towing in some combat aircraft over the Atlantic as well (not quite sure what the point is in that respect as there is little left to support).

EDIT: On somewhat unrelated news this is kind of brilliant:

Just saw it when trying to find any info on what is being moved in over the Atlantic.
