Age of Conan

Is this really true? How can you do PvP if everything is like GW? or is it instanced so that you can only see 40 something people in each zone?

Dare i say it, is it like D&D online?

Nope, people are just being a bit dumb about how the game works. The starter zones, which last up to level 20 or so, are full multiplayer like any other mmo once you get to the city (by level 5 or so). At the inn you have the option to go to 'night-time' which is a single player instance designed to progress the storyline. You can come out of it at any time by going back to the inn, and all the adventuring zones are full of other people. It's not that hard to grasp, there's just a lot of knee-jerk OMGWTFTHSSUXXORS rubbish going on.

You realise that Tortage is one of about 20 "Tortage" instances when you are in it?

Ah, its always hard to decipher through the moans and rants.
Thanks. Got a bit scared for a few minutes.

I don't think the idea of instanced zones will be a problem, although I haven't played AoC yet.

Every game has a limit to the amount of people who can be in one zone at a time, the only difference is, AoC chooses to create instances so it can cope whereas many other games would just crash due to the strain.

O.K. WoW in particular can have many more people in one zone, but that's due to the ultra-low poly count. You can't have everything.

It's not like there's new instanced zones just for you, they get created when the previous one is full - that's my view on it anyway from what I've seen, not actually experienced.

There's only 20+ isntances of each zone in the lower levels, once you get higher there's maybe 2 or 3 copies running.

It's simply the huge amount of players in the lower levle zones, and it's not like each instance only has a few people, they are pretty packed so isntances are a must.

I have no problems with it really, it's simple to change instance if you want.

Yeah I agree there are loads of people in an instance anyway, if it were all one seamless world it would be INCREDIBLY overcrowded and laggy, not to mention you wouldnt be able to complete any quests hardly.

There are a few problems with switching instances to join other players in your party but i think these are justy bugs and are to be expected.

Can you switch between these instances if you want to though, to find someone?

Yes you can jump from instance to instance whenever you like, thus if there are people around in pvp trying to kill you, just jump to a different instance and avoid them.

Every zone in the game is instanced, I cant remember the figures, but if I recall correctly when there are 50 people in a zone it then instances itself. So to answer the guy earlier , no, you wont be seeing hundreds of people running around.

The instancing is pretty game soul destroying, I am hoping the guild towns and sieges are going to make up for it.

Well, dont forget that the sieges are instanced too :)

- Terrible quest log.

- Everything is instanced, so your mate might be standing in front of you but you can't see him.

- Combat is clunky.

- Feat descriptions make you think "eh???" sometimes :D

- Inventory is pants... although seperate inventory for quest items is good.

- Necromancers are pants, how can a game make a necromancer, the coolest class ever, crap?!

I agree about the quest log, sucks not being able to display more than one objective on the page at any time.

Instances are fine. If you want to see your mate then why not just move to the same instance? Instances are populated enough... I'd rather not have my quest mobs camped out by 10 times as many people thanks.

The feat descriptions have never made me go Ehhh, but I think they could use some numerical values so you can decide if they are worth taking or not.

How can an inventory be pants? It's just a grid in which items are kept. It's the same as every other mmo except better because it helps classify your items.

I'm a level 20 necro and I think it's a lot of fun. Great aoe spells and a large selection of gruesome minions at our disposal. Enjoying it a lot more than my demonology warlock in wow.

Anyway, that's the side of the story from someone who likes MMOs!

Seems that there are a lot of unhappy punters on the forums at the moment. Any of you lot having issues with the game that make you think 'I won't be playing this in 1 month' ?

It's actually more a case of 'I'll definitely be playing this in a month, despite the issues'. The core game is fantastic imo, just needs a bit of polish. There are already UI mods out that sort my biggest issue with the game.

I didn't like it at first - upto level 10, I was bordering on uninstalling.

But it just gets better and better from then on. Really enjoying it, combat is starting to make more sense, although there is a lot of button mashing, and combo's get a bit difficult in the heat of battle.

Not sure about the massive level ranges in the instances though - we entered the first instance, and at the start they we're level 9, bit further in we got to level 17's.

Nope I think its great, A lot of the problems people are having imo is that their system is not up to running the game or they are having problems with it not being warcraft play style. No doubt there is some class imbalance but the game is sound. As for the instances its just like warcraft with the exception that rather than lagging out it just opens a new instances as the area pop goes up. The warcraft world is split into 3 big instances and in each area in each instance it is split up to act like an instances in itself. Not that most people would catch on to that due to lack of load screens. Its nice in AoC that you can see other players and npc from a distance, in wow they just pop up out of no where.

Lest not forget that Blizzard kicked all the botters the day AoC released sneaky move.

Although WoW is by no means the game for me, what you are saying there is totally different.

The 3 big instances you are referring to, I assume you are meaning the 3 continents. Each area in each continent is in no way acting like an instance in itself.

If my friend John and I are both in the barrens, I can see John (providing we are close enough of course). I do not have the situation where I can be stood right next to the same building as John, but not be able to see him because he is in another instance. If I stand on the border of Westfall looking into the next area, I can see John approaching in the next area.

That cannot happen in AoC. Its got nothing to do with loading screens, loading screens are inherent of zoning, not necessarily instancing. In no way do the individual areas of WoW "act like an instance". In fact even the continents are not instanced, they are zoned. No matter how many people are in a continent on WoW, you only have one version of that continent (barring obviously the different versions that each server has).

If it helps, DDO, CoH and AoC are examples of an instanced gameworld. EQ2, LOTRO and WoW (to a degree) are examples of a zonal gameworld. UO and AC are examples of an open world gameworld.

The graphics in this game are bloody annoying! When they work they look really nice but for some stupid reason the textures, that were fine not 1 minute ago, are all of a sudden blurry and crap.... Its annoying!
