Age of Conan

Started Friday night and got to level 24 by yesterday evening.

Game is good and at points I thought, this could be the one to cause me to cancel my WoW subscription, but now I'm not really sure. I've left Tortage now and the initial polish seems to have disappeared, no more voice overs on NPC's and every area being a mini instance (which personally I dislike). If I login with a friend and we both port to the same area can I guarantee he'll be in the same zone instance without being grouped?
What have they done with characters armour???? It's guildwars all over again. Everyone running round wearing the same clothes. I levelled from 10 to 20 and changed pieces of armour every couple of levels but remained the same to lookat througout. Perhaps WoW has spoiled me with variety, but it's what I expect. I don't want to blend into a hundred other people, I want them to see the decent kit I have and admire it!

Chatting to general passers by is a joke. No click and select to chat, everything has to be done via command line, by which time they're usually gone and with complexly spelt names using foreign fonts etc meaning you have no chance of typing them and zero chance of communication unless they message you first.
No auction house at the moment means a poor cash outlook for those early adopters of the game. Good job I got a free mount as there's no other way I'd get one by 40 selling blues and greens to vendors for the penuts that they offer.
Sprite collision seems a tad overkill, and characters won't even auto walk a 6" high step. Yesterday I had a 10ft long crocodile stood behind a 6" wide tree, only for the system to tell me that I had no direct line of sight to the mob. I could see 95% of the bl**dy thing.
Lots of bugs still in the game, icons remaining on screen after their cooldown has expired and other problems such as shadowweaving for ToS being disabled etc etc.

I know people are saying this in ony 4 days old or so, but the reality is that we've been spoiled of late with highly polished games and thats what were used to and more and more mmo's are coming onto the scene everyday now. The reality is that if I give it time to be fixed, something else will have come along (Warhammer etc) and AoC will have missed the boat. Developers need to realise this and ensure that the little things work before release. I understand there will be bugs, but silly things like crap chat interface where you're unable to change the colour are unacceptable. These games are about guilds and communities and yet they make communication so difficult.
Unable to logout without exiting the game. Game doesn't exit properly under Vista64 and I get and error everytime I log out.
What exactly did they use beta testing phase for if it wasn't to iron out bugs with the client exiting, the auction house and exploits with quests and classes???

Graphically it's very good. Loved doing the black ones area in whitesands. It even made me go wow when I first saw the rendering, but ultimately excellent graphics don't make a game.

I did have 2x30day gamecard on order, but due to being backlogged, I've now cancelled them as my mood towards the game has changed a little. Will I continue to play after my 30day trial? Really depends on what changes in that time and what gets fixed/modified, but at this moment in time I'm thinking that I'll probably return to WoW in preparation for WoTLK later in the year.

^ Don't I seem to remember that when WoW came out pretty much all the armor had placeholder graphics, and it wasn't until later they were able to upgrade it? Seems like yet another case of comparing a game with 4 year's worth of patches to one that's merely a week old.

You're completely right.

The difference is that when WoW came out there was nowhere near as much competition in the market so people were happy to put up with the bugs and continue playing. I remember that through beta and the first 6months Warlocks were a completely broken class yet people stuck with it. Do you think that will happen today with Warhammer around the corner and WoW about to release another huge upgrade?

As for the armour thing, I played WoW from beta and never noticed what you describe about armour placement. Maybe for the higher level/epic items, but definately not for standard drops. If AoC only made greens and above look different to vendor purchases then I'd be happy, but it's not the case. Everything at the moment (except the blues obtained from nighttime quests) look the same and even taking the blues into account everyone has them once nighttime is completed so you still look the same as the rest.

Exactly what I have been saying and we've been discussing this in guild chat, it's only been out 4 days. The majority of Wow polish came after release. It's launch was a shambles whilst AOC has been fairly smooth. Yes there are bugs and some of them are irritating but it comes with the territory and they are constantly releasing patches to address this. Remember bug testing on a larger scale will always come post release as they can't find everything in beta and in-house testing.

May 27th update includes a fix for something most of the complainers mentioned. That'd be chat text colours being hard to read, so hopefully theyve made an improvement else I'll have to edit this out :D
GUI

* Changed the chat colors to be more like what players are used from other games.
* The guild chat text is now green
* Removed the DirectX 10 option from the option panel.
* Removed the 'Remove from Spellbook' functionality
* OOC chat channel should no longer be inactive after teleports.

EU server launch is now 11:30 BST according to offical forums.

Finally it was bugging me having to do that everytime.

1. Field of the dead not to freeze after a few mins. (Otherwise Sinny will actually burst )
2. The ability to add gems to crafted Items without a CTD and thereafter permanent CTD's if you mouseover items in the inventory. (Major bug imo)
3. The lack of any knockback resistance on mounts (Anyone with a mount will know there is a knockback glitch)

I hope number 1 on my list has been fixed...

Full list:
General

* Grouped players that are apprenticed will now get their kill XP capped to the correct level.
* Characters should now always get zoned back from a PvP game
* Characters should now be able to move away from their spot, without the server thinking that they are hacking
* Using a lower rank ability should not lock up your character anymore

Quests

* Players should no longer lose destiny quests if their quest log is full
* Corrected some typos in various quest texts
* Updated directions in the quest "A Dangerous Challenge"
* The flame on the Torch of Eiglophian will now die after a while in Fields of the Dead.

Playfields

* Fix a lot of graphics lag issues caused by particles in Tarantia Noble, Field of the Dead and Eiglophian Mountains which should result in much lesser lag in those playfields

* Guardian - Fixed a problem where the third rank in Counterstrike Stance was not giving you the damage shield while in defensive stance.

When it comes to the chat interface, it is the same interface as is used for Anarchy Online, and is recognised as one of the more powerful chat systems around... want to talk to someone with a strange looking name... click on them, the /tell %t message

it should be, %t for target, %m for self

and the note about markets and banks:

We are fixing the traders and the banks but some exploits would still be possible with the version we have now. We know how important it is to have traders and banks back in the game but the system must work absolutely correct before we put them live again. The possible exploits that would result when this is not ensured would lead to much bigger issues for all players.

Thank you for your understanding.

W00t Tarib posted this yesterday, Got to say funcom are at least addressing most of the problems :). Hopefully in this patch.

We are also looking into the following issues:

* Quest Log getting full
* /claim not getting all the pre-order items
* Socketed Items raise problems with other items

Tbh at the moment I'm finding Conan interesting, but obviously unfinished right now. The graphics are very nice, however a little optimisation at lower levels wouldnt hurt for people with worse machines, although I admit the game graphics are very complex so Im understanding of high requirements. Come time however I'm fairly confident the dev's will try and fix/tweak most of the things people are asking of them (in a pvp orientated game/server, I dont believe people SHOULD be able to inspect gear/class of a character without permission for example), and stuff like the UI, UI options, performance improvements, bug fixes etc usually come after release in any MMO, WoW not withstanding.
To be fair, whilst Conan is flawed right now, its had a far more smooth launch than most of the other MMOs I've played; the servers are generally relatively lag free and I've had few disconnects, yes stuff still needs to be tweaked/fixed/optimised, but they've got approximately 5 months til WotLK comes out to make necessary improvements to hold onto players; and given they've patched what 2/3 times already since the game was released, I'm pleasantly optimistic about Conan becoming more solid, relatively quickly.

Would be nice if the manual included this kind of usful info.
