Age of Conan

On the PvP vs PVE debate. I have got chars to mid 20s on both server sets.

I got totally annoyed with the PvP server as far too many people thought is was extremely funny to come and attack me when I was mid fight (also they would be 5+ levels above me).

Now after work when I just want to get on with some questing and do little else I found this too annoying.

The Carebare rubbish does my nut in, played PvP in WOW as well, if you can't enjoy your game because of total idiots whats the point.

Total idiots? its a PvP server, I would gank anyone for just about anything and expect to be ganked over just about anything. It turns a mindless grind fest where players queue up to kill mobs singing cum-bay-ah, into a cut throat test of adaptation, cunning, reactions where the skilled dominate and the rest thrive to match them. PvP is exciting, sure I have to go grind some mobs all the same, but anything can happen along the way and I don't know whats waiting for me when I get there, I could be free to quest all night or I may have to crack a few skulls, what is idiotic about any of that?

PvE rulesets are not how this or any other game should be played, you are intentionally nerfing your own experience and any hope of ever being good at it, it is completely carebear, not that theres anything wrong with that if thats what you want, just don't try and kid yourself into believing its anything else.

I've rolled a Guardian on a PvP server (Battlescar). I'm really enjoying it and love the feeling of danger and the fact that you always have to watch your back. I just accept that getting killed is obviously part of the game. I've got no problems if I'm off questing and someone attacks me who is + or - lets say 10 levels of me.

The thing that I do find annoying is those who feel the need to go beyong what I class as PvP, and move into actually trying to spoil another players game. As an example, when I first went to the white sands as a lvl 7 I was killed by 2 x lvl 20's. I just don't understand what enjoyment they could get out of it, especially when they decided to camp the spawn point and just kill me the instant I rez'd.

I just accept that this is the downside of having FFA PvP, and at least with this game you can move to a different instance if someone is really annoying you. It's fun when you turn the tables, when I got to lvl 20 I spent a couple of hours in White Sands waiting for high levels to attack low level people, or anyone who was spawn camping, and had great fun taking them out :)

oh right yeah, i forgot that everyone in the whole wide world likes to prove their manhood by fighting everyone and anyone and that "being good" at a game is everyone's idea of ultimate success in life

My basic argument is that what is the benefit of me playing on a PvP server when a level 40 char can run up tome (20 levels my senior) and gank me and continue to do so at rezz?

If you are trying to tell me that you as a hardcore PvPer would get enjoyment from that, then I feel sorry for you.

I understand perfectly the dynamics of PvP, and I suppose I hoped that a more 'mature' crowd would allow some kind 'fair play' obviously I was wrong.

Ah, but that's the whole problem with MMO's, isnt't it? If it was planetside or an online FPS, or even EVE, then yes, the skilled dominate. In just about any mmo it's the looser with no social life who plays 10 hours a day to hit max level first with the best gear who dominates.

Skill isn't going to help you in most mmo game mechanics if someone 10 levels above you decides to gank you. Cunning can help, in watching your back and finding isolated spawns to grind, but once battle starts, it's all about levels, not skill.

You might have to pay to unlearn your embellishment skill to put points into that :(

If PvE wasn't one of the ways the game was intended to be played then do tell me why the developers saw fit to have more PvE servers on launch?

hmmm I do wonder, must be a hell of a lot of carebears or is it because like many people say the amount of ganking that goes on is a complete put-off (Don't kid yourself, there is no skill involved when people 10 or so levels higher than you decide to gank). Also what is there to gain from pvp over pve? no looting...etc. Well anyway I'm off to go continue being a 'carebear' :/.

This game wasn't designed for FFA pvp imho, seiges and group v group are where it's at. Even FFA in the border kingdoms is available on PvE servers, so don't go kidding yourself that players on PvE are carebears - infact lots of ex-daoc players on Dagon so plenty of skilled PvP will come soon.

To even think that AoC or Wow style PvP servers are in anyway hardcore is a joke. Try EVE online, or UO (original), hell even EQ1 PvP servers were more hardcore than wow or aoc ones.

Personally a I much prefer the PvE servers, nice and relaxed with the option to PvP whenever I want. Put in some proper risk/reward and I might bother with a PvP server.

Jesus you can still play the proper instanced PvP or whatever it is on a PvE server, that's where the real PvP will be. Ganking is just lame and annoying. And I doubt tbh that the PvP as it is currently will be much good anyway, it'll be very unbalanced most likely.

Was really tempted to get this game as my wow guild has moved into AoC, but I don't think I will be.

I think I'm finally retiring from MMOs.

Hi guys, I'm thinking of getting into this. I heard this game has its zones instanced... how does that work? Like Guild Wars or something? Cos then that doesn't really make it an MMO does it...

See a few dozen posts back, the game's zones are persistent, but it makes additional instances of them when they get too crowded. So not like Guild Wars, cause the zones there exist in closed instances (ie. they're only there for you and your party), whereas these are open instances with other players coming and going at will. Chat and /say messages are broadcast throughout all instances and you can switch between them through a simple drop-down menu for grouping. So it's more like the towns in GW rather than the explorables.

Agreed so AOC pvp really is just as lame as wow ?
