Ended up doing an online order because my local Argos does not hold them in stock. I could have used my Mum's car, so that wouldn't have been an issue.

I have just bought the same one, so I hope it gets delivered soon. I am sweating in my room right now, with all my windows wide open and two fans blowing around the room!

What brand is it? I've been looking on Argos but the cheapest I cant find (after the £100 mark) is a £165 9K BTU.

I hate my room, in the summer its roasting and in the winter its freezing. Over the last 2 weeks or so I've been gradually cooked alive inside my room. Got a fan sitting next to the open window blowing air in, yet it just seems to make it worse. :(
 
The £165 is the one thats at homebase for £99 till wedensday, so something to think about when making your choice.

That ones perfect for you then, air con for the summer and a heater for the winter :D
 
First up, these things are noisy, be prepared, oh, and heavy, 22kg's :eek:, this particular system is rated @ 900btu cooling capacity and the power consumption is rated @ 815watts @ 4 Amps, so not too bad.

Setting up was pretty easy, all I had to do was whack in the supplied carbon filter in the top rear filter compartment of the unit, screw in the supplied outlet hose (extendible to 1.5m) into the rear of the machine and then place the hose out of the window, switch on the machine, and then adjust the thermostat controls to my desired temperature.

I switched on the machine @ 13:30, set the temperature on the unit to 18c, my rooms temperature at the time was 28.7c measured by a digital thermometer, after approximately 3 hours of use with the compressor running for 100% of that duration and the fan @ full power the rooms temperature is now 24.5c.


So, am I happy with the unit, ummmmmmmmmmmmm, not really, but at the same time I'm not really unhappy with it either, the room does feel a lot cooler, and the humidity has dropped significantly which is nice, a couple of concerns I have is a) The noise factor, and b) the running costs due to the fact that the compressor is on all the time as the unit is not cooling the room to a low enough temperature for the compressor to auto shut down, and 815watts 24/7 is going to be costly.

At the end of the day it only cost me £99.99, I've have always wanted to know how these units function/perform and have found this to be an interesting learning experience, whether I keep the unit yet (I can hear the polar bears crying now :p) or throw it down the local tip is yet to be decided.

I have one of Amcor's portable A/C'ers in my room and it is very good. Being portable means you have to expect it being noisey - we were going to have the whole house done with some split wall units until I found we were moving -.-

If your in it for the long haul I'd go with a split-wall setup - initial costs are much more then a portable, but in the long run your room(s) will cool quicker and the compressor wont necessarily be on all the time. - oh and its much quieter so you can sleep at nice with it on.

Do you think that will make much of a difference to the temperature ? my unit is actually sitting on top of the foam atm becuase it was reverberating the floor, with the unit sitting on the foam not only is it quieter but it completely cuts out the reverberations on the floor.

What I may have to do is buy a small sheet of compacted/dense foam to replace the window kit foam that my unit is currently sitting on..

I just went to homebase after the £90 unit was showing in stock at a store not far away.
They sold out, the display unit went earlier today for the bargain of £65, bummer.

dont have it pushed too far up against the wall, trying making a bigger gap between the back of the unit and the wall.

Shoulda got the £115 12kBTU one. Went from 25'C to 17'C before I went to bed last night :)

How good are they? Noisey? heavy?

Also I read in the comments:

I trust this just means the standard hose that most of these units use? How long & thick is the hose?

Very noisy when the compressor kicks on and off, but you get used to it. It's very heavy. Will take 2 people to lug it up stairs.

It uses a 125mm diameter hose which is about 3 metres in length, and comes with a curved pipe type thing to stick it out a slightly open window. It does not come with any foam or anything, but it does come with a through the wall fixing kit.

It's mainly used in a medium sized bedroom, and keeps it at a nice 22-23C. Even after 4 years it works as new, still blows out cold air so all is good.

It pulls about 1200Watt from the plug when ever the compressor is on and I would imagine around 150watt when its just running the fan. Remember the compressor is not on 24/7 it only kicks in when the temp goes above the threshold that you set and will turn off as soon as its a degree or so below it. Few minutes later, kick in again, rinse and repeat.
