There about £180 in argos.

Are these proper air cons then? not them de humidifer things where u empty water? Seem cheap.

It's a proper air conditioner, your thinking of 'Air Coolers', they actually add water to the air, they are not very effective in humid weather conditions at all, air conditioners take water out of the air and cool/dry it.

We got the same one a few weeks back when they were cheaper.

Noisy, but it's nice and chilly in my room now.

Well if you wait until Tuesday when mine arrives I'll be posting up my impressions after a little play, I've personally never owned one before, a lot of people do say that they are quite noisy though, and expensive to run, I think the one I've ordered is rated at 2.35 kW , but I guess that's on full power.

Not sure on KW ratings on things. Guess thats a lot then? I'm moving to a bungalow on saturday so it will only be used for a small room. Probably only turn it on untill the room is cool, then leave it of.

I'm worried about the hose though, the windows in the bungalow are quite high

Your power input would be around 900w, unfortunately these don't have capacity control so it wil be either 2.35kw cooling cap, or just what the fans pull with the compressor off.

Washing machine on spin cycle noisy ?

It should definitely be quieter than a spinning washing machine. It's only noisy when the compressor is pumping. Depending on what temp you set it at, the compressor will kick in more often. I normally set mine to 22c, but on a very hot day, that compressor is gonna be kicking in more often at that temp.

I bought a used Duracraft one for £55 http://www.homebase.co.uk/webapp/wc...=1|category_root|Heating+and+Cooling|12079508 and it cools the air quickly and niceley. Only downside is the cable tv remote adjusts the temperature and stuff and vice versa, the AC remote switches the set top box off which is a proper PITA. I was gutted to find another duracraft the same as mine go for £25 on ebay.

during the last hot spell a few years ago my room peaked at 40c, thats why i got AC. South facing room, lack of wind, old PCs pushing out 600watts of heat etc.

Aint had the need to use it since though, been a lot cooler summers since then thanks to global warming, have a more efficent PC, no CRT monitor burning up in the room.

Some of us just like it cool like peterattheboro said..... oooooh 17c. To me that sounds fantastic, i hate anything above 25c if im honest.

I was using one in my buddys trailer yesterday, his was rubbish, a house fan would do more, but i don't know what they are generally like.

In the UK for the last 25 years recently to Canada where is gets very hot, i.e hot enough for air con.

I've never felt the need for air con in the UK.

On a slightly different tack (sorry didn't read the whole thread) has anyone bothered to get aircon professionally installed in their house/room?

I've got a mobile unit already but it's pretty poor - even though I have it set to 18 (lowest it'll go) it never really manages to do anything besides just stop the room getting even hotter from my PC(s) being on. It'll pretty much read as being 22-25+ in the room all the time.

It's also annoyingly loud.

I was quite interested in getting a split unit but don't have the skills to install it myself. Was just curious as to whether anyone else here had bothered to get someone round to fit a proper wall-mounted unit?

I got the homebase £99 today but the hose is so bloomin fat it doesnt fit out my window. I have those double glazed windows that open inwards from the top or fully lik a door. Ordering one of these from screw fix to fit at top of window so it can actually work.

Practically impossible to find something like this actually designed for the air con units. So if anyone else has dumb windows like mine this should do the trick

hose is 1.5meters and its not too noisey, something that will disturb a light sleeper but I found it okay and the compressor only comes on when needed.
