Air conditioning units?!

It doesn't start up properly because the compressor doesn't switch on unless its been off for a few minutes.Zildjian said:It should be dropping below 26C. How cold is the air coming out? My feels absolutely freezing when I put my hand infront, make sure yours is the same because sometimes it doesn;t seem to start up properly and it blows rather warm out. Make sure the hose is completely out the window, because it blows out pretty damn hot air.

The portable ones are okay, but a window unit is MUCH more efficient. Both in electrical useage and the actual cooling it can do.
I am keeping 1040 sq ft of almost uninsulated house at 23C whilst it's 34C and above outside with 40% humidity. All this with two 5250BTU units : one in the living room downstairs, one in the bedroom upstairs.
The advantages of window units over portables are drastic :
1. No water to empty, they just dribble it outside as the condensation forms.
2. MUCH larger area for the heat it produces to escape from (better efficiency and reliability).
3. No heat escaping from the hose into the room it's trying to keep cool (see #2).
4. No floor footprint at all, so no space taken up by it.
5. COMPLETELY seals to the window so no bugs, no thermal loss through an open window, etc.
6. Much smaller and lower cost per unit due to no water tank, hose, wheels, fancy outer shell, etc.
The only advantage I've found to a portable one is that if you live alone, you only need to cool the room you are in, so you just drag it around with you to the room you're in, which means you can get a smaller unit as it doesn't need to cool the entire house.
But since I never stay in one room long enough for one to matter, it's definately not worth it. Plus having to take down the hose and set it back up every time I moved then wait for it to cool the room is just not satisfactory to me.
In the spring I just open a window, put the unit in, close the window on it, turn it on, set the thermostat, and leave it running until autumn. Then I take it out of the window, wipe it down inside and out to clean it and put it up on a shelf out in the garage until the next year.
I paid $89 US for the one down here last year, and paid $139 US for the digital one (with remote) that's upstairs 3 years ago.
As for electrical useage, they don't really make THAT much difference in the bill. My electric hot water heater and the electric clothes dryer use WAY more. In the neighborhood of 10 times more. So the AC units barely make a dent in comparison.

It's no good, I'm going to have to get one. We're bunking round my parents atm while we have work done on the house and their spare bedroom is like a furnace - only got two tiny fan lights and it's baking inside even when the temp outside isn't too bad.
Have had a fan blowing over us for the last couple of nights but it's still far too hot. Just need to persuade the mrs now - who has some bizarre objection to having a vent hanging out the window?
Can anyone quantify the 'noisy' statement with regard to the Homebase/Argos units?
