Air fryers

The thing to remember is to try not to take notice of that bore down the local that'll try to convince you you are not doing it right and how something is pointless and consider what an Air Fryer might be able to do for you, without the cost of perhaps buying sous vide equipment, separate pressure cookers, steamers, slow cookers, which is some of the ovens and other tools that could be required to do what Air Fryers are capable of.

We have a collection that all get used, sometimes at the same time and one that was to be sold is going back into use (Foodi)


1: Instant Pot Duo Crisp + Air Fryer 11-in-1 Multicooker, 8L
2: Ninja Foodi MAX Health Grill & Air Fryer 5.7L with Digital Cooking Probe, 6-in-1, AG551UK
3: Ninja Speedi 10-in-1 Rapid Cooker, Air Fryer and Multi Cooker, 5.7L, Sea Salt Grey, ON400UK
4: Ninja Foodi MAX Dual Zone Air Fryer AF400UK
5: Dreo ChefMaker Combi Fryer, 5.7L

I was about to replace the range oven and hob with a single oven and hob, but the OH has agreed that we will not bother with the oven for now and will be happy with just a hob.
1: Can air fry, sous vide and having a lid means a 50hr sous vide is possible without topping up the water. Is a pressure cooker (whole chicken 35mins) replace the lid and brown that same chicken. It is a slow cooker and can handle much more.
2: Air Fryer with a probe that allows cooking to be precise and takes guesswork away and more.
3: Air Fryer, steamer, steam + air fry, steam + bake, slow cooker and many more features, including doing complete meals in one.
4: Twin draws for Air Fry + Max crisp function and all other features of an Air Fryer.
5: Clever bit of kit is this Air Fryer that includes a probe and the ability to sous vide without the water bath and can be set to do so and then crisp up at the end of cooking + app based, so programs can be sent direct to this Air Fryer for that perfect meal.

Perhaps the name Air Fryer is not correct, but there is no way these are just fads, like woke (?) and I'd be very interested from the most outspoken about these devices (links can be provided by me) as to how much I would have to spend to have the ovens and other equipment needed to do what those above can do for me, oh and how much bigger would my kitchen have to be.

@{SAS}TB Recently bought the larger Ninja dual/single draw for his family and am guessing it is serving them well, as ours do for the two of us.

Yep still getting loads of use

Very handy especially now we all have a good handle.on how to use it :)
 
We snapped up a Silvercrest (Lidl) multi/pressure cooker last year when they were €19.99 if you had the Lidl loyalty card to replaced our ancient slow cooker that wasn’t heating evenly anymore.

Super useful for stews, curries and chillies using cheap cut of meat.

I just did cheese on toast for the first time with the airfryer. I used my toaster to lightly toast the bread first then added sliced cheese from Aldi. It only take 90 seconds on Max Crisp to melt the cheese nicely!

Take it to the next level with the full grilled cheese sandwich experience. The trick is to spread the butter, mayo or whatever on the outside of the bread. Put the cheese in the middle and then air fry the sandwich until it's golden brown (e.g. 5 to 6 minutes at 180, flipping partway through) and full of melty cheese goodness.

you are absolutely right apart from the grill bit. An airfyer is simply a small oven.

Which when people say things like pineapple upside down cake works well in an er… oven(!) one has to chuckle. Sorry giburrows didn’t mean to pick on you, you are just one of many.

A bit like woke we are starting to see a turning point and I think these tabletop ovens will start to die out or become car boot fodder.

I think it depends on the person and I don't believe it is a fad that'll die out in that respect. If you are someone with a decent oven and enjoy spending time in the kitchen regularly and do a lot of catering I can see them having more limited appeal, for someone like myself where convenience factor is high (I do a lot of shift work) only spend any serious time in the kitchen occasionally and mostly doing small portions it is a game changer.

For the right person and usage it is as others have put it a very very handy bit of kit to have.

No one is stopping them from continuing to heat up a full size oven or a deep fat fryer full of oil. But for anyone who wants to quickly apply heat to foods that fit into an air fryer basket, there can be serious advantages in saving time, energy and using less oil. If you always need to cook meals for (say) a family of six then an air fryer may have less appeal. But I know loads of people who say that since embracing the air fryer "fad" they almost never use their main oven anymore.

An airfryer is nothing more than a smaller oven, a downsized oven and if people understood that it would be a lot simpler, i’m highly doubtful we’d even need this thread as people wouldn’t need to ask can I cook a potato in my oven.

The obvious example for many people would be making chips from a potato. You can cook them in a deep fat fryer (once you have sufficiently heated the oil, which should be replaced after a few uses). You can do them in a hot regular oven (but you will need to spread them out on a tray and mess about taking them out of the oven and turning them over). Or you can cook them in an air fryer with a single spoonful of oil and an easy shake of the basket.

I have not felt the need to use my main oven in over a year and not used my deep fat fryer for several years.

Some people get it, others don't.

It works so well for us that the OH is now quite happy for me to remove the range and replace with a hob and not bother buying another oven.

That's not marketing, that is moving on and adapting to what suits what you want from the kitchen.
I see that in his reply he never took onboard the extra's I took the time to mention above that would require separate ovens and equipment that are handled by my small collection of Air Fryers and guess some just like to moan about what they don't fully understand.
 
So without an oven you'll never experience the joy/mastering of baking RIP ....

Baking is something the OH mentions mostly in the Summer months and relates to the outside temps :D

But the Speedi from Ninja is capable of baking and has more than enough space for the two of us, if we never decided to us it for that.
 
Those with the flexi draw ninja, does it cook large joints of meat ok and whole chicken.
I have the smaller duel fryer but looking at the flexi for larger cuts of meat.
I think the draw height is lower in the flexi, has that been an issue?
 
Just loaded the Instant Pot Air Fryer with water and am doing a 2hr @56°c sous vide Silverside that has been dipped in English mustard, cracked pepper and sea salt and will then switch the lids at the end to Air Fry some colour into it.

Perfect & cheap cold meat for the week.
