Airfix

Here we have Revell's 1/32 Grumman F4F-4/MARTLET MkV presented as a FAA Martlet.

Background

At the start of the Second World War the British Navy was desperately in need of a powerful single seat monoplane fighter. The new American made Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat fighter fitted this requirement.

Initially named the Martlet by the Royal Navy they were re-named Wildcats in 1944 to align with combined US and British operations.

1,123 Fleet Air Arm Martlets operated in all theatres of war including Norway, the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Far East.

However, Martlets distinguished themselves in the Battle of Atlantic and on Arctic Convoys providing effective fighter support from escort carriers and working effectively with Fairey Swordfish in the hunt for German U Boats.

In October 1940 two Martlets of 804 Naval Air Squadron, based on Orkney, forced down a German Junkers 88A that was attempting to bomb the Home Fleet at Scapa Flow. This was the first victory credited to an American Built fighter in British service.

This is a re-boxing but this kit was originally from 1969 (same year I was born).

This is the second aircraft kit I have completed since a return to the hobby and I'm still learning lots including using an airbrush.

Thats very impressive for a second build mate, well done. Myself, I've started the Airfix 1/24 Typhoon Ib and to say its beast is an understatement. The box is mahoosive, bucketloads of parts, and the kit is monstrous in size. Heres a pic of what I've managed so far after "three days" of work and I'm still on the first page of the instruction manual!

Is there a painting service available anywhere for these models? I have a Tamiya Matilda II kit gathering dust here...

:)

Pieman, I absolutely love the airfix 1:24's. They are full of details. I've got a stash gathering dust at the moment but I have promised myself I will get round to starting on them soon. It's just tricky trying to keep my 3 year old away! :D

I've got the Spitfire VB, a Polish Spitfire (can't remember the exact model), and the JU-87B which looks stunning. I've already finished the Hurricane MkI.

Pieman, I can't remember if you said you are using acrylics? The leathery worn effect on that seat is so good and the engine parts are amazing. Are you using wire for the engine tubes or is that supplied with the model?

Charging for a commission build not something I normally do, I know of a few people who build to order and for something like a WW11 single engine fighter, a spitfire or ME109 in 1/48 scale they'd charge around £150-£200 mark depending on how the model was built/ finished.

Hi Phil, yes, I virtually use acrylics all the time except for dry brushing when I'd use enamels. You can't use acrylics really for dry brushing as the paint dries to rapidly.
With that engine, everything you see is provided in the box, no after market bits and pieces were used at all. Its staggering the amount of parts that comes in the box. The same applies to the cockpit. :)

Is that a new airfix release? The Mossie is probably the most impressive model I've ever seen in terms of quality and the amount of pieces supplied is staggering. I don't know any other supplier with that sort of attention to detail in the larger series of models. I guess that's why I like them more than the smaller ones. Plus they're a bit easier for me due to my large hands :p

Just ordered my first 1/700 scale ships from HLJ. IJN Haruna, Atago and just waiting for Kaga to arrive this month then I will get them shipped.

Thinking of ordering a few more, but we see.

Like I said before, I used to be in 40k but that was a while ago, can anyone recommend any tools or tool kits please?

Heres more, finished the engine now just starting on the radiator

How was the canopy?

Although my second one was crack free, the distortion was worse.

Hoping Airfix get something better soon or will go AM.

Not building mine for a while, my skills not there yet, got crack on with my P47-D bubbletop.

I'm currently building a Trumpeter HMS Hood and have the new Revel Bismarck to follow on. I realise however in not as good as some of you :(
