Airfix

once your models are ready for weathering do you guys clearcoat? and then weather?

what do you use?

Always a gloss coat before decals, golden rule here. :)

It's good practice to clear coat either gloss/satin/matt between each stage of weathering. This will preserve the layer below and allow the possibility of recovering from a **** up.

Depending on the paint brand, i'll use either Klear (Future in the US) or alclad aqua gloss.

For matt, I use Vallejo matt acrylic varnish.

Thanks for the reply, Basically i want to keep the same colors as pre varnish as such, so a matt coat suits. do you spray? or brush this on

Personally, I spray everything now. When weathering I airbrush a coat or 2 of Tamiya XF-86 Flat Clear thinned very slightly with Tamiya X-20A. That allows me to correct mistakes easier. When all weathering's done and I'm happy with everything, I finish off with a spray of Humbrol Matt 49 varnish. Locks everything in firmly. Particularly vital when using pigments or powders, or they just fall off over time.

I have a request.

Is there any chance a mod could change the name of this thread to The Scale Modelling Thread?

Airfix is a manufacturer and quite a poor one at that compared to the likes of Tamiya and others, and most of the models on here are not Airfix. Don't want to be pedantic, but just feel it's a more appropriate thread title.

Good call - +1 :)

Scale modelling would also potentially throw into the mix RC scale models, static models made from wood, metal etc. Perhaps 'The Plastic Kit Modelling Thread' would be better? as that is what this thread is about. I only say this as the first thing I thought of on reading Scale modelling thread was big 4m scale RC gliders :D That's due to my past hobbies, which also include making plastic kits.

I was looking for this thread and only found it through a reference to "model".

It would be cool to have Model (or something) in the title.

I have lots of RC cars some shelfers, some runners and I race them too. I've tended to avoid anything that needs painting and when I have a complicated paint scheme for a car, I send it to someone who knows what he's doing. Building them and modding them isn't a problem. Painting is. My one save is that my GF is very artistic and creates some stunning work so hopefully she'll give me some help.

I've had a Tamiya 1/16 full option tank waiting to be built for over a year and I've decided I want to give it a go. I've invested in an airbrush set which should be here soon. Rather than jump straight into the main show, I was thinking of buying the smaller static 1/35 JS2 and practice using the airbrush on that. Doesn't have to be fancy just want to be able to have some acceptable looking shading.

If anyone has a finished tanks or indeed any advice I'd be grateful. If I can pull the tank off to an acceptable level I'd love to tackle a 1/32 plane so any advice/info/recommends would be gratefully received.

Just started having a go at Tamiya's 1/32 Phantom F4J. Lovely kit, everything fits together nicely except for the intake trunks which have a mahoosive gap! I'm gonna use true details intake covers so thats a bucketload of work I don't have to do. I've nearly completed the cockpit, just need to do the bang seats and I can start on the main fuselage assembly.

I had to replicate wiring behind the rear seat instrument panel using lead wire, very easy to work with and them effect is nice looking. Only trouble is, it looks like a load of entrails when viewed up close!:p

I also agree that the thread title should changed to reflect that its basically pertaining to "plastic model kits" rather than RC models, etc,

Some background on the Mk.A Whippet:

The Medium Mark A Whippet was a British tank of the First World War. It was intended to complement the slower British heavy tanks by using its relative mobility and speed in exploiting any break in the enemy lines. Whippets later took part in several of the British Army's post-war actions, notably in Ireland, North Russia and Manchuria.

Some great builds in here. Love the look of that Phantom Pieman, do you have a build thread anywhere?

Just gave my 109 the next colour of the splinter camo. Pics to follow.
