***AKG Q701 Official Owners Thread***

I think most of the tuning is done via the ear pads, the 65th Anniversary and 712 have memory foam pads which increase the bass by quite a bit. However, they do lose some of the airiness that you get with the Q701's and even more so with the 702's.

Makes sense and this is probably in part why the X1 sound so meaty as well as they too are memory foam pads with thick velour on top.

I need to know how much soundstage is affected though!

Can't help you there. I was considering getting the gel (memory foam) pads but decided the port mod gave me enough bass and it was still fast and well controlled - I think adding the pads as well might just make the bass boomy and flabby while ruining the sound stage.

Just been listening to the K712 pro..interesting. Now I have quite detailed hearing and can pick up differences very quick but I'm shocked at how quickly I notice the difference between the 65th and 712 pro. They both sound warm, both have that new refined AKG sound with excellent bass but one sounds more like an improved AKG while the other sounds like it's going in a different direction. The 65th is intimate, thick and full with a lush sound. The 712 is kind of full too with warmth but it has a lot of air like the previous AKGs.

Vocals sound more upfront with the Annie while with the 712 they sound further away and surrounded by air. Stage is larger or at least it's more obvious while on the Annie the stage is large but very full sounding with a lack of air and congested compared to other 70*

The K712 sounds like the Q701 and Annie had a baby and the Annie sounds like the HD650 cross bread with the Q701 and had a hybrid baby.

Just first impressions got loads of testing to do. So far very good, best soundstage I've heard by far in any headphone.

I "think" these are the pads but it would be worth phoning first to confirm...

and these are the normal ones...

priced for ONE ear pad

ps. not sure on whether these links are allowed but Thomann's is a musical instrument store that also sells headphones and amps, so "competitor links" are tenuous at best.

Burn him,

You're fine for now If I suddenly go all mental and into pro audio I might care.

but till you see me stocking an extensive range of Studio monitors and Studio grade Audio interfaces I think we can allow them.

Now if Harman would answer their emails :D or beyer would pick up the phone we might get somewhere. :o
