***AKG Q701 Official Owners Thread***

What's peoples suggestions for the best bang for buck amp & dac for these?

AUNE T1 MK2 I paid £120 for mine, there is a huge thread on head fi about it and a small one on here.

You can upgrade the DAC by tube rolling.

You can then upgrade the AMP by buying a single headphone amp like Schiit Vali and using RCA out.

The only downside is that it is USB only therefore only works with PC/Laptops I imagine, never tried it with my PS4.

AKGs do better with a warm amp with good separation. Try the Vali, Little dot amps.

The Fiio E12 is really good. More intimate sounding but has enough power and energy to work well.

Its not here yet. I cannot give a link but if you google: Hand Woven Pure Wool Headband Cushion For AKG K701 K702 Q701 Headphones. I might not use it as the head band feels ok now.

Thanks, at that price I've ordered one in black. Should add some additional comfort too and protect the faux leather from wear. I like that it's not mega thick like some padded headband covers and is all wool so easily washable.

On another note the bass on these is insanely good now, dare I say it, very close to X1 level, more than I thought previously even.

I may mod mine and stick to the HD558's for gaming (which also need modded).

Got a lot on my "to do" list and not enough time. Is the bass really that much better when modded? They don't sound "fun" at all stock.

Yes the To Do list for the Q701 is quite fair for those wanting the best out of them :p

Well worth the efforts though and minimal costs incurred!

Put it this way, the bass on certain music and movies I can't tell if it's the Q701 or the X1. Obviously the tell is in the highs and mids detail + soundstage but the bass is more than detailed and kicks low to the point I would never think "I need more bass".

Ordered material's to try make the headband comfy.

Instead of faux leather I'm going to try a black alcantara type material along with some 5mm thick padding (may be too thick) and some lime green strong Jean thread.

Plan is to cut the bumps off and follow the original stitching to make it oem as possible. Away for 6-8 weeks yet so won't be able to attempt the mod for awhile.

Is there any way of removing the headband then refitting it to allow the use of a sewing machine.

Nope the headband is bolted at each end so the only way to get it off is to break the bolts and then fit your own bolts after it's all stitched up. You could use those snap on buttons that can be found in textile departments I guess.
