Alan Smith

horrific, I can't imagine what would have been going through his mind when he looked down at it. :(

oh **** i should think.

It really was a horrific injury, i to hate man u as much as the next guy but it really silenced me for those minutes, i do hope its not as serious so as amputation to be an option, that would be a real shame. Alan Smith should still have many years of top flight football him, i wish him all the best and hope we get a miracle recovery like Cisse!

I felt physically ill when it happened. I couldn't believe the extent of the injury, as at the time play just continued to go on. I assumed he'd just pulled up with a hamstring, then when it went to the players crowded round him waving the physio frantically on... :(

I don't give a **** who won today. I only watched MoTD in the hopes of some news about Alan's condition, which they barely mentioned.

He was a gutsy determined footballer and imo deserved to captain United manys a time when he was the only player on the pitch who tried to get the team going and provide some motivation. Since joining the club he's been red through and through and I truly hope and believe he'll receive the support and best wishes from all the fans, players and staff alike at United.

It's not right to throw blame around, but I feel extremely angry that Smith was brought on at all by Ferguson - the decision made little sense and ended in a complete disaster.

We've lost Solskjaer, Heinze and now Smith to horrible injuries - arguably three of our biggest team players.

Little has been said about the consequences of the injury as yet, but I hope and pray today won't be the last time we saw him wearing a Manchester United shirt. No footballer deserves this, let alone one who is so committed to the sport and his team.

Agreed :)

well said Icebus, sums up how I feel as well, although we can't see into the future or predict injuries like this, in a way Ferguson should be starting our key players and not bringing them on 1-0 down with 15 minutes to go and expecting a miracle to happen. Smith made an instant impact and was really committed more so than any of the players (bar Rooney) who had played the previous 75 minutes. And this injury is an indirect result of his crap tactics.

Great post, couldn't agree more :)

My stomach was turning when watching MOTD, even though it wasn't clear, I knew what was going on which made it worse. I could physically feel my ankle hurting (re-occurring ankle injury) which comes and goes. I really do feel for the guy, I think he is a strong character and be able to pull through it and put it behind him once he is on the road to recovery :)

Excuse my ignorange but how exactly did this happen??

- Just over in New Zealand at the moment and just read about it on the web -
Says he was blocking a freekick or something? Guessing he jumped and landed seriously wrong??

Cheers

Yep exactly right, he kind of jumped towards the ball feet first, his left leg touched the ground first - it was preety limp i'm guessing the studs found grip straight away and basically his whole body weight was on his one ankle - dislocating that then once that couldnt be pushed no further is leg gave way, sickening really hope he gets well soon but this is a bad one the players reaction told me how bad it was.

I'm not sure what to think of it, maybe his leg break isnt as serious as the ankle injury - I know its stupid to say a leg break isnt serious but his ankle is very very bad, reason I say this is because the first reaction Alan Smith had was to grab his ankle in pain - He's broken his leg but grabs his ankle, I cant imagine the unbareable pain the ankle must have been to make the leg break a non priority, man its making me sad thinking about it.

In the space of a month he's gashed his head open twice, dislocated his ankle and broken his leg. Not once did he go down like Robben. Thats why he is a hero. He isn't afraid to go in where it hurts for the cause. In a game populated by diving nobodies and money grabbing ***holes Alan Smith is a rare shining light.

Get well soon Alan on behalf of all true Football Supporters.

I love the man, I did when he was at Leeds and I love watching him play when I go to Old Trafford. He has more ability than people give him credit for, he CAN play the midfield role (which he proved against Chelsea with aplomb) and he never complains. If we had 11 Alan Smiths we would be the best team ever.

He's a hero to the Man Utd faithful and there's nothing more we want to see than Alan Smith playing again. I don't know many players who would throw themselves infront of a Riise shot like that, whats more, I can whole-heartedly say, next time he comes up against Riise he will do it just the same.

I couldn't care less about the result after seeing that. I thought about him before, he must be lieing in a hospital somewhere absolutely devestated.

Dislocations are extremely painful, as the bone tends to trap nerves and blood vessles. The slightest movement grinds bone on bone with these in between. Some breaks are painless. People have been known to carry on not knowing. Wasn't there a keeper who played a cup final with a broken back?

Its sad to see it happen to any player but Smith was abit of a hard man and the old "I will never play for Man U" on Soccer Am incident, I cant see any Leeds fans losing any sleep over this.

Oh well, he will still be on more money than any of us even if hes does have to retire now.

I must admit, as soon as it happened I did think it was amusing to see a United player down after Riise had hit the ball at him. Within about 3 seconds of laughing I realised how serious the injury was and felt physically sick. I wouldn't wish an injury like that on any player no matter who he is. I really hope he recovers quickly and gets back to playing for United and England.

it was a free-kick and he stole about 5yrds trying to charge it down, he was just so focussed on blocking the free-kick he landed awkwardly on his leg/foot.

it was great to see the Liverpool physio's helping out and i wish him the best of luck in his recovery and hope to see him playing again in future.

I couldnt watch that yesterday, once i knew he'd at least broken his leg i had to turn away. Hope he pulls through this and plays again, i reckon its not looking good for him at the moment
