Alan Wake 2

Got to say though I’m actually quite enjoying it now.
I've got mixed thoughts on it.

I loved AW1 to bits, but this feels like it almost belongs to that same era. Some of the assets in this (fish) are hilarious and look like cardboard cutouts where you can see the edges. It feels like a game still stuck in the past at times. I am at a Nursing Home at the moment but just like AW1 I am tired of going through the same motions of gameplay - except with AW1 I found it very repetitive towards the end, I feel like I'm already there with AW2 but I have no idea how far in I am.

I dropped the difficulty to Story mode because combat was just getting to me. Maybe I'll try NG+ at some point on Normal but I am partially wishing that maybe I should have jumped on Robocop instead. I was looking forwards to this sequel for ages.

I was told by the game that I am at the end mission now. An hour later and its still going on - dear lord this ending is just dragging on and on. I am getting deja vu of hour AW1 ended as I remember it dragging on.

So the bits with Saga leading upto the 'final' musical battle are great and hilarious. Then the story shifts to Wake and it just goes on and on so I quit for now and shall resume in a few hours

Edit: Run around with a torch, run around with a torch, go into every room, pick up a key, run around with a torch, hear some BS narrative, run around with a torch, pick up a new key, run around with a torch, run around with a torch, access case board without a care in the world and change something that makes no sense, run around with a torch, find a new key, run around with a torch....bloody hell its 2010 all over again.

Honestly, things weren't bad until this last mission with Alan. It has taken me 3 attempts to finish it and I am still working my way through it as it is so long. I'll resume tomorrow as I cba wasting a Saturday of gaming time on this.

Edit: Ok turns out this mission with Alan is not near the last as the game suggests. I am now using the guide at https://www.thereviewgeek.com/alanwake2-walkthrough-initiation7-8/ - because other guides seem to be a muddled mess regarding progression. Just shows that I am not the only one confused.

I'm surprised by the Marmite reception the game's getting, I thought it improved over the first one in every way. It's definitely a slower-paced game but for me that's a good thing, the first one regularly didn't give you enough opportunity to explore the areas and would just send streams of enemies at you, whereas I found the pace of the combat much more fun in AW2. The only real complaint I had was that using throwable weapons was far too clunky and took too long, especially in a pinch.

Finally finished it. Doesn't help that both characters have their own separate storylines and I got locked into Wake's storyline towards the end that is borderline tedious.

Great story but dragged out so much. Remedy know their stuff and AW1 was solid if a bit drawn out, this feels identical in every aspect. 25hrs Played (dashboard shows 30hrs), when it could have been way less given how much backtracking is done.
