Alder Lake-S leaks

I just spoke to OcUK on the phone and had my order split so mobo is on its own order. The lowdown is that there is no ETA on mobo deliveries for any model. It could be 2 days, it could be 2 weeks. Bummer!

I even phoned around locally and everyone is in the same boat. The only Z690 in stock was a low-rent looking MSI Z690-A which I'm not interested in lol.

OcUK will now ship my CPU, AIO and other bits today arriving tomorrow and I'll just be hanging around for the mobo.

I may actually end up changing the mobo from the Asus pre-order to the Gigabyte since we're in this position.

Snap, just did exactly the same on the forum support section. CPU arriving tomorrow, Mobo (Maximus Hero Z690) backordered. I think it's important to keep the orders together, to easily qualify for the £100 asus cashback offer.

Hopefully ASUS prioritize OCUK for motherboards, since they likely have hundreds ordered. Hope it's nothing like the Asus Strix 3080 scenario :D:D:D

Yep same here no boards came in what a strange launch this has been so far.

so customers who pulled the trigger on alder lake before reviews are even out, to be ahead and have the new CPU before scalpers/chip_shortage/pandemic/weather_on_mars kills stock and inflates prices... get hit by DDR5 and motherboard supply being woefully inadequate?
brilliant

Did you expect anything else, given the current worldwide shipping and logistical issues due to the pandemic?

I'm frankly amazed that OCUK secured enough 12900k's to satisfy the huge demand. I expected to be waiting a few weeks for them.

Zen 3d is also coming soon.

Right now even X570 + 32GB 3600C16 + 5800X is considerably cheaper than Z690 + 32GB5200C38 + 12600KF. Gaming wise it is not much different and above 1080p it is no different. Productivity is probably pretty close (although the lack of a 5800X on the LTT review is a real shame).

Once DDR5 is cheaper and B660 is available then a 12400F build is looking pretty impressive in price/perf.

The biggest issue Intel have is the size of the AM4 user base and not having the node to design to build 16 core cluster. AMD have been out selling Intel for nearly for nearly 5 years as much as 8 to 1.

DDR5 has an advantage if you need hundreds of gigabytes of RAM. 4x128gb sticks of 3200mhz DDR4 is £4-5k 4x512gb is closer to £20k At those prices the cost of the rest of the system is becoming irrelevant.

There’s like 7 guys buying Alderlake :p

That's how I'm feeling at the moment.
Worked out I can get a 5800x and a b550 board for nearly £50 less than a z690 gaming x ddr4 and a 12600kf
At 1440p with a 3070ti either would mostly be a sidegrade over a 10400F for just gaming.

I upgraded from a 3600 to a 5800X with a 3080 @1440p and found no difference in the vast majority of games.

Just to add, my 10400f and b560 tomahawk would be going back to the rainforest as it's still within return period.

So getting the alder lake ddr4 setup would cost me £140.
Or 5800x and b550 for £90

Only annoying thing is EK don't have a LGA 1700 bracket available for my AIO yet

I would also make sure motherboard is in stock... If it's your only system and you need it up when you send back the older stuff. It looks like it's coming down to what will be available too.. Unless you plan to be without a system for 2 weeks + at this rate, if not longer as we have seen with shortages.

5800x setup is starting to look good to save the headaches and if you noticed most benchmarks don't have the 5800x on them, take a guess why ? Intel probably asked they don't compare that to the new chips. ;)

Also upgrade path in future will be cheaper too on AM4 all way up to 16 core chips and new ones soon too with 16 cores and 3d cache... Who knows what intel will do with Z690, maybe these chips now only and no future upgrade and a new platform again, intel being intel...

I've ordered the board via the rainforest, says delivery on the 9th.

I'm starting to think the 5800x might be the better choice for me, as well as being able to drop the 3D chips in next year, but we shall see, it's only a gaming rig so not mega important, don't need it for work etc
