Alder Lake-S leaks

It's a shame he didn't mention what thermal grease was used, granted he did state the cooler which was a Noctua air jobby but he also said that this cooler beat most water coolers too so who knows lol.

I'll be running the Arctic Freezer II with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut so am expecting heat control on the 12700 to be better than an average setup.
There’s a lot that isn’t covered that I expect the German sites and the likes of GN will cover once the embargo lifts or when they’ve had more time with the CPUs.

Edit - also, Linus did stress that the extreme thermals were only seen in very specific tests, not across the board and (he stated explicitly) not for gaming.

@MartinPrince that’s xmp lol. There’s a reason I keep saying adl is going be a whole diff beast with real mem and proper tuning.
Fascinating! :D Fun times ahead to be sure for those that that like to tinker with timings! 53ns might not be too bad a starting point but it will be interesting to see how much can be shaved off that. My old DDR4 started ~51ns but with better DDR4 and tuning I could get down to ~37ns. (I think I've seen yours at ~35ns)

I can see HCI Memtest being used but what is that Memtest application right next to the AIDA64 window?

Just cancelled 4 components from competitor and ordered 12600K from OcUK. I'll get a motherboard from somewhere at sometime. I'll just be able to stroke my new CPU tomorrow.
Your not the only one haha
I have a board due for delivery on Tuesday, bit gone DDR4 instead

ill have to wait to see my cpu on monday live in belfast..

Just got my monthly copy of Custom PC through the door. It's looking like Alder Lake is really good. Excellent reviews for each CPU.

12900k 125W ish
12600k 75W ish

Source, Linus video slides.

This seems to be what we have right now for gaming power draw figures from independent reviewers. For context that puts the 12900k power consumption slightly below the 5950x numbers (and dropping below the 5900x often) and the 12600k slightly above the 5600x they are comparing it to.
It isn’t a very in depth review, so there is more to unpack, but the embargo ends soon. As I said before, the tone of the review is very positive.

Fantastic :)

Least we are in this together then eh :D

I have changed the mobo from the Asus to the Gigabyte, I much prefer the look of this too as will suit the overall interior theme of my build more: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/giga...ntel-z690-ddr4-atx-motherboard-mb-5a8-gi.html

Some feature differences are better IMO too on this than from the Asus.

Nice board, can't go wrong really with Asus/Gigabyte :)

Personally love the audio solution on the Hero - great amp and DAC built in, drives my Sennheiser HD 660S really well.

It's looking good for the 12600kf for me, I'm still yet to not rule out a 5800x and b550, especially as I'm not going to DDR5 yet

The i5 is super impressive. Those workload temps on the i9 seem worrying though, bringing back memories of getting a couple of the new ryzens at work and they were constantly over heating even with water cooling.

Yeah, I don't get all this DDR5 rubbish. It looks like gamers are going to want to stick to DDR4 for lower latencies. Creators might benefit from the higher bandwidth of DDR5 but is it really worth it yet?

Exactly, that's why I'm thinking a 5800x and a b550 board, maybe a 3D chip, then look into a DDR5 platform, I'm currently priced out of going DDR5 straight away too

The 6000Mhz and 7000Mhz+ kits will be available over the coming weeks/months, which will quickly reverse that situation.

I have a cheap 16GB kit of 4800Mhz Crucial on it's way to me, while I wait for a 32GB 7000Mhz+ kit ;)

Several have being able t
thats at 1080p so the gap will be smaller at 1440p+ ? I feel zen 3d will beat it

We need new graphics cards, at higher resolutions the graphics card is bottlenecking the cpu

It varies. For some games you can gain a lot from the extra bandwidth while for others not really so the latency penalty means DDR4 will be better. As always you have to look at your own particular use cases to determine which to buy.

Producivity numbers are huge, really impressive. Sure it uses more power, though it'll complete whichever task it's running faster too, so this needs to be considered.

Example, Blender completing 16% faster on a 12900k vs 5950x, while also being cheaper to purchase.

At 240W it's using 58% more CPU wattage to complete 30 seconds (or ~5%) quicker vs a 5900X. So that argument really doesn't hold water...
