Haha, I'm glad the motherboards aren't in stock as it gives me time to weigh up my options.
I planned to order a 12600K and lower end DDR4 board for my brother to add to the RTX3070 I bought him as payback for all he's done for me over the years. His use case would be 4K60 gaming on his TV, PCVR Gaming on his Quest 2 and he has the Adobe Suite for his 18 month old Photography hobby.
However, I got overhyped by the Alderlake launch and decided instead to give him my 5900X/X570 Strix-F/4x8GB Vengeance 3600mhzCL18 that I still haven't built yet, and buy myself a 12900K/Asus Maximus Hero/2x16GB Dominator Platinum RGB 5200mhzCL36 to go with my RTX3090.
While I knew that MSFS2020 in VR (My main use-case) was a few frames faster with a 5900x/RTX3090 compared to a 10900K/RTX3090, several people said it still felt smoother on the 10900K because of some frame time weirdness or somesuch. So I am surprised to see that even the mighty 12900K is still a couple of frames behind a 5900x in that game. But has anything changed for me? Maybe the 12900K is still the smoother experience?? I guess I was hoping I would maintain that smoother experience with an Intel chip while a 12900K would pull ahead of a 10900K and 5900x by a few frames too. I guess its simply GPU limited at this point.
So really, what do I gain by sticking with the aforementioned 12900K/Hero/32GB DomPlat DDR5, thats costing £600+ more than the original 12600K for my brother plan all things considered??
Perhaps I should go back to my original plan and keep my 5900x system for myself, cancel my 12900K/Maximus Hero, sell my already received 2x16GB Dominator Platinum RGB 5200/C36. Instead order a 12600K and an Asus Prime Z690M-Plus D4 Micro-ATX DDR4 board (was making a full ATX board work in brothers HTPC Formfactor case but Micro ATX would suit better), and buy a pair of Patriot Viper Steel 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-35200C19 4400MHz Dual Channel Kits for the brothers 12600K Micro ATX system?
or...
Given everyone is saying DDR5 was actually the better choice for ALderlake after all and selling my DomPLat 5200mhz/C36 to fund a 4400/CL19 DDR4 Kit will be harder in Ireland compared to the UK, but the painful Brexit Customs malarkey will make it a mare to sell it to any of you in the UK....Well maybe the only shame in keeping it and using it in a Micro ATX DDR5 Z690 board with a 12600K for my brother is that this First Edition, beautiful looking DDR5 kit will be forever hidden inside a windowless HTPC form Factor case. For example the Asus Strix Z690-G DDR5 Micro-ATX is £300 cheaper than the ATX Maximus Hero!!
or...
Do I say **** it !! I can afford it!! The Maximus Hero and Dominator Platinum RGB will look fantastic in my Case and the 12900K Wafer 'Trophy' will look great on my Desk!! The brothers HTPC form-factor case with a X570 Strix-F/4x8GB 3600C18 Vengeance RGB DDR4/5900X/RTX3070 hidden inside will be a stealth beast of a gaming and productivity rig for him looking all discrete and unassuming on the shelf of his IKEA TV unit.
God Dammit, no choice is ever straightforwards or easy!!
.....but at least the Z690 motherboard delays is giving me time to think!!
Needless to say, if I get an email from OCUK asking me do I want them to split-ship my 12900K ahead of my Maximus Hero, I'll say, "No, thank you very much!!" LOL
