Aliens and UFOs explained on Google Video

Today I learned that aliens are popping to asda for the weekly shop.

In all seriousness, that's less ridiculous than most of the "it's aliens" stuff. Even though you've taken one of ritcH's unsupported claims (that people from other worlds often "simply go shopping for the day" on Earth) and made it a bit sillier, it's still less ridiculous than most of the "it's aliens" stuff. If (and it's a very big if) there are alien civilisations with routine interstellar travel at effective speeds vastly in excess of the "speed of light"(*) and they know about us and they come here at least quite often (i.e. the usual "it's aliens" assumptions) then it would be plausible that there would be a market for "genuine Earth products". Sure, they could make exact copies of Mars bars or Asda's own brand baked beans or whatever, but those wouldn't be "genuine".

* phrased that way because it's not really about light per se. The naming irritates me.

"In all seriousness" I cant actually work out if you are joking or not :p

What bothers you about phrasing the "speed of light" in that way?

I'm not joking. I think it's wildly unlikely that it happens, but I think that it's less ridiculous than most of the "aliens did it" stuff. Aliens built the pyramids and Stonehenge because reasons and they mutilated cows because reasons and they made the Nasca lines as landing strips for spaceships (which wouldn't need landing strips and the Nazca lines wouldn't be suitable as landing strips for anything anyway). Etc, etc. I explained why I think that in my post, the one you quoted, although pretty much anything would be less ridiculous than most of the "it's aliens" claims.

it's a universal constant, not specific to light. Which doesn't necessarily travel at that speed.

Ahh I think I get what you mean, that they wouldn't be able to travel at the speed of light or greater?

I'm at a bit of a loss here. I thought I was being clear in my meaning to begin with and then again in the second post clarifying the first. But you've interpreted it as something completely different. I don't even know which part of my post you're responding to when you say "I think I get what you mean".

So I'll try again...

Part 1: Alien people coming to Earth at all.

My opinion: Very unlikely. Even if they do exist (we don't know anywhere near enough to even begin to assess the probability of that) and they exist today (there's been plenty of time for species to become extinct) and they have technology far in advance of ours, the distances involved weigh heavily against them even knowing we exist let alone coming here. Coming here would be far harder than detecting our existence (which would be impossible unless they happened to be extremely close on an astronomical scale). Maybe human understanding of the universe is fundamentally wrong, superluminal travel is possible, time dilation wouldn't be a problem and the fact that everything we know of fits c being a hard limit is just coincidence. But I doubt it. Perhaps there's some kind of completely functional workaround. Warp drives, wormholes, magic, whatever. But I doubt it.

Part 2: Alien people coming to Earth to do the common "aliens did it" stuff like building the pyramids, Stonehenge, etc, making the Nasca lines as landing strips for their spacecraft, mutilating cows, giving electric lamps to ancient Egyptians and so on.

My opinion: Ridiculous even if alien people were coming to Earth at that time. The only way any of it makes any kind of sense is if the aliens thought it would be funny, probably when drugged up. e.g. one night while humans were asleep, the aliens quietly used their hyper-advanced technology to build Stonehenge in a couple of hours just to freak out the local humans. I suppose something like that might possibly have happened. But I very much doubt it.

Part 3: Alien people coming to Earth to do a bit of shopping.

My opinion: If alien people are coming to Earth then doing some shopping would be less ridiculous than the usual claims because of the possibility that there might be a market back home for stuff they could buy on Earth, probably simply because it was from Earth. These hypothetical people would have to have a high enough level of curiosity about Earth and humans for any of them to bother coming here at all. So maybe genuine Earth products would have some value in their society. Or maybe just as a memento of their trip.

Wow ok, you went way too deep off a joke I made in response to the nonsense ritcH posted. I'm not sure how you got the impression I have tried to interpret your post in any way, the only part I asked you about was how you were phrasing the speed of light in a certain way.

I thought I would humour you regarding your first reply, which I understood perfectly but couldn't work out if you were being serious or not(which was pretty obvious when I said "I cant actually work out if you are joking or not"). I was interested in the "speed of light" comment as it wasn't clear to me what you meant and it was obvious what part of your post I was referring to so not sure why you are confused about that. I don't even know why you made this post as I didn't ask you to explain something that didn't need explaining.

Its on google they are REAL that is good enough evidence for me. :p
Since when do you believe MSM? You spent months say saying we shouldn't believe them as its all a distraction?

While UFO's are clearly 100% real I am not convinced there is any evidence they are aliens though its a tiny possibility.

I also still don't get what angilion is/was trying to say about SoL
I also haven't got a clue what you're on about.

OK, so I'll have another go at explaining my position on that.

There is a specific speed (with the standard label for it being 'c').

Light does not necessarily travel through the universe at that speed.
Things other than light can travel through the universe at that speed.

So calling it "the speed of light" is inaccurate. It's sort of like naming the top speed of a particular car after that particular car despite the fact that other cars can reach the same speed and that particular car doesn't always travel at that speed.

It's not a big deal to me. Just a minor irritation.

[..] it was obvious what part of your post I was referring to so not sure why you are confused about that.

It wasn't obvious, because you quoted the whole post. Which was only three lines. So it wasn't obvious that you were only referring only to the last line and not also the other two lines you quoted.

Well I thought it was obvious as that third line is the only line that mentions the speed of light so assumed you knew what I was referring to. I was genuinely interested in what you meant with regard to the speed of light phrasing.

Whereas I didn't assume that because you were also referring to aliens coming here so your reply could have applied to the other two lines (about aliens coming here) as well as the third line (about the common naming for the universal constant 'c'). So now the intended meaning has been clarified:

I was genuinely interested in what you meant with regard to the speed of light phrasing.

Did my post ~195 clarify what I meant about the speed of light phrasing?

Its all good, i just wanted to understand wht you meant regarding the speed of light, ill have a look at post 195.
