Alienware M11x

I would buy one of these right now if they released a non-kiddie looking version. I personally find the lights and hideous design an embarassment and could never get it out on the train on the way to work. It's a shame they don't put these components into a standard, smart looking design.

i quite like the design and hopefully they'll bring it out in red.

I'm sure Dell will eventually. Maybe a Studio XPS type design with any luck.

I really wanted this Laptop at first just for at home and flights etc, but mainly for at home around the house etc, but when I specced it up slightly it became £860, and I can get a very powerful m15x for £1100, so then it made me wonder, what does this Laptop have that will make it more useful for at home etc? now, I really really like the idea of this Laptop, but I know theirs others here that have the same "I want this Laptop but I cant put my finger on why" reasoning, so what is it that you like about this Laptop? cuz a few weeks ago I REALLY wanted this thing, now if I was gonna buy an Alienware the m15x seems like it's worth the extra few hundred pounds on the price, but yeh, any opinions anyway guys? ;D

It's a completely different laptop to the m15x, it's for people who need a small portable laptop with a little bit more power.

the m15x isnt a portable laptop in any way. its a desktop replacement with no battery life and weighs a ton! also dont expect to put on "lap" as it gets very hot. It is good for people who would use at say work and at home on a desk plugged in.

m11x is as portable as a netbook but will good peformace

Yeh I suppose in that regard it's very nice :), but how much more powerful is the GT335m than the GT330m? the new Sony's have the GT330m and having inspected a few sites the GT335m seems considerably more powerful, at least on the Notebook check site, but of course, the new Sony's are also much more expensive

Which Sonys are those?

I've just ordered on ETA is 26/2. Dell rep tells me its been held up as they dont have the chassis avaliable yet grrr  I WANT IT NOW!!! :D

I speceed mine up with the 7300 processor and the 4GB of RAM. I'll also be putting in my OCZ vertex 60GB from my desktop PC which is going to make room for this, meaning it should be very quick wooohooo (before you flame me for selling a £1500 gaming pc to buy this, its because i game very little any more and spend more time on the girl friends laptop than sit on my pc antisocially :p)

This laptop makes the perfect blend between the two options. Nice small laptop for general internet use etc and then when i want to game i can do, im still keeping my 24" monitor for when i game so its best of both worlds. I often go to LANs too so its ideal there.

All in all Hardware Heaven gave it a very good review as did IGN. While i know it'll never be the u;ltiomate gaming machine, we have to remeber the market its targetting. People who want to game on the move, people who want to game and cant afford or even want a big PC. People who simply want the best of both worlds.

It can be overclocked too, for that extra bit of ooomph :eek:which hardware heaven doesn't impact the heat although i suspect the battery may take a battering.

Soon as i get mine or get an update on it i'll update it here. Pics will follow as well as my own personal mini review.

Does anyone know wether this will output audio through the hdmi out? hope it does or is a dealbreaker for me as i want to be able to plug it into any hdtv and be ableto play movies etc..

Current CW has the GT230M.

I thought the new CWs had the 310m and not a GT version? I was going to get a CW in December '09 with the GT230M but they replaced it!! I think the 310M non-GT is slower? I'm not too sure about it.

How would the M11x handle RTS games like supcom though? I take it the machine would just die?

the refreshed CW comes with a 310m as standard but if you get a custom build you can upgrade it to 330m but you also need to select the 1600x900 screen.

And in answer to your other question i guess it would depend on which RTS but Empire/supreme commander as an example would bring it to its knees but would you want to try and play a large scale RTS on an 11" screen?

Yes, it will indeed. Usually this requires you changing the sound output to "Realtek Audio over HDMI" in the sound control panel or something similar, but that's it.

I would also suggest if outputting over HDMI that you use the nvidia graphics card for handling it as the CPU looks as though it may struggle (see hardware heavens results). They used a specical codec to do it and it worked a treat.
