Am I getting too old for PC gaming?

I bought a GTX 460 the other day to try and get back into some PC gaming. I bought COD4 MW, Assassin's Creed, Bioshock and Crysis on the reccomendations of this forum.

The thing is, I just cannot get back into the swing of things. I'm just not enjoying it. The standout game amongst those 4 is COD4 MW. I'm loving the single player. I've had a look at playing online (through my 3 mobile broadband dongle! :)) and things are just too hectic. I'm 38 now and I think my reactions are going!

Initial thoughts on Bioshock is that it's going to be repetitive. Assassin's Creed is repetitive. I've played it for long enough already to find that out.

I'm considering selling up already and getting a PS3 for playing more 'leisurely' games like Tiger Woods, FIFA, G1 Jockey and Red Dead Redemption.

Has there been a cut off point for you? And at what age? Have your gaming choices and preferences changed as you've got older?

If you are using the Three mobile dongle you have to send data over the slow 3g network and then through Three's slower crappy servers, don't get me started on data choke. You could end up being 0.5-1 second behind everybody else due to the latency of the crap network you are on.

Level the playing field and get some proper wired broadband my man.

55 last week and still at it (gaming that is). But I promise not to wax lyrically about the good old days of text adventuring.

Though must admit to more than a little disappointment at games in general stagnating a bit due to "consolitous" (think I just made a word up!). Sup. Com. 2 being my biggest disappointment of recent times (don't start me ranting about how they ruined that game... and yes I did play it all the way through in the end). IMHO until the next gen consoles come out, I can't see any quantum leap in graphics coming (and that's probably 3/5 years away). Though I suppose "graphics do not a good game make" necessarily.

I also find many games far too easy, even with the difficulty level cranked up. What with instant save, little arrows showing me where to go (yes BIOSHOCK that's you that is, like I can't read a map!). And all I have to do to regenerate in a lot of "shooters" these days, is crouch behind something for a few seconds. Where is Operation Flashpoint (original) when you need it!? Obviously generalising a bit here, but you get my drift. To much pandering to the casual gamer and people with little or no attention span. Moan, moan, moan (happens when you get older).

Though this is coming from a man that's only just got round to starting Fallout 3 (been sitting on my shelf for ages).

Now the latest Tomb Raider game off STEAM was a reasonable revelation (if you like that sort of thing).

Still an interesting pastime though as far as I am concerned. :):):)

Reactions going you say? No.. COD4 is totally different to other type's of game. I've always thought myself as pretty good at these types of games, but on first playing the multiplayer I got hell of a shock. Totally different and so fast to get killed. It takes a lot of practice but you get used to it, then start loving it.

Make sure you take time and setup the mouse speed how you like it so it feels 'natural' to you, that really helps.

38 - The games market is definitely not as good as it used to be, far to many console ports ( basically recycled rubbish). I play TF2 and Stalker SOC/CS and COP, I like flight sims as well. I still have my old games eg HL1 etc Theif 3 and Operation Flashpoint (just love that game) on my office pc. I am choosy as to what I buy and normally read reviews and go on feedback from forums before I make a purchase.
Just started playing backthroughh HL2 agian this time with the cinematic mod 10.94, havent decided whether to use the adult charater pimper yet though ;)

I'm 27 and pretty bored of gaming as well.

Games like arma: operation arrowhead, Men of War Assault Squad, FM 2011, DCS: Blackshark are the only ones keeping me interested now.

I am 38 and all I play is fifa 11 on ps3, utterly bored of fps rpgs and all other game genres not even sure I can be bothered with GT5.

The problem with pc now is there just aren't the same exciting innovative ground breaking addictive must play games anymore and I don't see any on the horizon either barring diablo 3.

The golden age was I would say 1997 to about 2004 I believe the golden age will come again but it's not for a long while yet.

I'd advise nobody to upgrade their gaming pc but get a ps3/360 instead.

All of the profit is in consoles now so it's a no brainer when considering upgrading a pc these days.

consoles are now in decline I will get a launch console next gen but now I hardly touch my ps3 or wii and tbh my desktop I need to upgrade to a gaming laptop to benefit my lifestyle now.

I'm 23 but I definitely share the same feelings as those of you who are much older than me.

I started playing PC games when my dad was playing them in the early 90's, and started with the likes of Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Quake and Tomb Raider. Since 2005, I have felt PC gaming really declining in my interest fast. HL2 was the last game I have played that really impressed me in terms of SP experience. Like many have already said in this topic, I too thought BioShock wasn't as good as everybody was saying - it just doesn't captivate me.

For me, there's only been a few games in the last decade (2000-2010) that really broke new ground: Deus Ex, HL2, May Payne, Call Of Duty 1, Medal Of Honour: Allied Assault, Diablo II, Thief II (loved the first but that was before 2000), GTA3/Vice City, Operation Flashpoint, TF2 and L4D1/2. I just haven't been impressed at all with the likes of Crysis, Far Cry, Doom 3, Quake 4, later COD series, etc. I find the heart of those games is for the flash graphics and visuals rather than gameplay immersion. It doesn't help that games keep copying each other and dumbing everything down, making it too linear and giving the constant feelings of "seen it all before".

*Loads up Quake and Tomb Raider again on old Win 98 PC" :p

31, still gaming after like amiga days loved those days, got bored pretty quick of console games. PC games got really into and bought loads.

Don't like shooters now not like i used to, find better times in role play and strategy games. Played batman arkham asylum, mafia 2, dragon age and star wars 1 and 2 to death.

Playing WoW cannot wait til cataclysm gets released and still be going strong for years to come

no offence but you bought 3 pretty crap games and mw1 is half decent :o

This, 100x.

BioShock? Not a patch on SS2 or Deus Ex. Oh yeah, it's underwater, but so what? It plays like crap.

I don't think we're too old for PC gaming (I'm 30 btw). I do think PC gaming is getting very stale, currently.

Once graphics stop getting perceptibly better each generation, perhaps we'll start getting better games, but... maybe not. Perhaps - and I think we've already seen the beginnings of it - future gamers in general will be so shallow that they'll be happy with shallow, graphically stunning games.

The future will either be great or be dismal, I'm afraid :p As for the current crop of games, they really are nothing to write home about.

You never get too old but you become quite selective in what you play and the gaming does take a back seat as there are many other things to do.

i dont think its just pc gaming thats getting stale but the whole damn thing!!!! Gaming companies have their eye on the maximum profit too much and are forgetting that the medium is still in its infancy. Compared to the movies gaming still hasnt gotten to the talkie stage yet.

I feel old when there are what sound like 4 year olds in l4d etc

I'm pretty bored of it all. Still play occasionally, last game i bought was civ5 had a couple games and never really touched it since.

The ps3 is even boxed up and under the bed.

/shrugs.

I'm 40 now and I will lose out every time if I run around a corner face to face with one of the younger members of our clan, they are just too quick for me. I have definitely slowed down, but my rugged FILF looks and confidence at the urinals gets me over this hurdle :D

38 (39 in 2 weeks :( ) with a 10 week old son. All my spare time is taken up logging into Eve to check corp mail & quick R&D mission, followed by quick blast in League of Legends (if the lil' one stays asleep).
