Am I Wasting My Time Trying To Get Fallout 3 GOTY To Work?

I've just finished The Witcher and moved on to Fallout 3 GOTY but it seems I've got one of the systems the game doesn't like.

I'm running:
Windows 7 x64
I5 2500k at stock cause I'm still waiting for my Silver Arrow to be delivered.
8gb Ram
Asrock z68 Pro3 mobo
X-Fi Fatal1ty
HD4870 XT

I've got the problem that loads of people have had where the game hangs after playing for a few seconds and I need to close it through the task manager. It always happens in indoor areas.

I've think I've spent about 4 hours trying to get the damn thing to work and thought I'd ask if anyone here had a quick fix for it before I give up.

So far I've tried:
-Editing the config file to use only 2 cpu cores.
-Editing the config file to use only 1 cpu core.
-Disabling my second monitor.
-Running the game on the minimum graphics settings.
-Running the game in windowed mode.
-Running the game in compatibility mode.
-Validating the files in Steam.
-Disabling the community features in Steam.
-Looking at the event manager to see if it says what's making it hang.
-Auto logging in to GFWL
-Updating the exe to use more than 2gb ram.

Things I've thought about trying but really can't be bothered just to play one game:
-Setting up the system to dual boot into XP.
-Removing my soundcard and uninstalling the drivers.
-Taking out a stick of ram so I've only got 4gb in.

Any ideas before I uninstall it?

I don't really have any advice on the issues you are having with it but it will be worth all the effort you throw at it to get it working. Such an amazing game, especially with all the DLC

Disabled VPU recover in the CCC?
I can't see an option in the CCC to do this.

Have you tried turning ffdshow off?

Also you could try this-

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16490

It has solved a lot of problems for me.

Also, you could use CASM which creates rolling autosaves every 1 or 3 minutes so that you never lose much progress. It also makes the game more stables (apparantly)

And there are quite a few fixes mentioned in here- http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18294193
I'm don't have ffdshow or any codec packs installed but I'll have a look at that patch.

hmm

I know the game is buggy and runs like crap, but you probably just making things work by fiddling with all the above.

I would unistall, remove ALL the changes you'v made.

Reinstall game clean, update to latest patch.

Install latest drivers, try again. Gaming isnt that broken that this wouldnt work.

If it still experiencing issues, then..... it may not be the game.

Rereading your op, I beat its related to steam. I played the standalone version and although it was more than buggy, it played fine enough.

Always a mistake speaking too soon!

Hope you sort it, I gave up trying to get FO3 working on my PC, just crashed whenever I left the vault, gave up in the end which is a shame.

Shame cos its a realy good game I never had a single crash with fallout 3 on vista
now fallout NV that likes to crash when it feels like :/

Hope you get this sorted as it's not too bad a game. Shame that a bug whenever I saved inside a building that would ruin it for me though. Load up the game inside the building, go to leave via the door, fall through the map as if the ground outside is just a hologram.

Nice.

Prolly speaking too soon again but I put Steam into offline mode last night and played the game for an hour and a half with no crashes.

I fully expect to load it back up tonight and have a crash straight away. :)

Hope you get it working, really is an amazing game. You haven't overclocked your processor at all?
