Amazon Fire TV

Is the stick worth having when you've got the fire tv ?
The stick is just a cheap alternative to buying another Fire TV if you wanted to connect to a different TV.

If your just using one TV then you don't need both!

From my experience there isn't much between the Fire Stick or TV, however things like Ethernet and Optical audio may sway you to the TV.

The stick for most people though with good wifi is more than suitable and it gives you a nice saving from the fully fledged Fire TV.

I'm very impressed with the stick, in terms of media play back it does pretty much everything my minix neo x7 does but its a much better experience using a proper remote. between prime and plex from my server, it has just about everything covered :)

I did. It was easy enough. Did it through my Mac using abdFire. What are you struggling with? It was just a case of enabling the developer settings on the Fire Stick, then getting its IP address, then connecting to it with that IP through abdFire, then using it to transfer the .apk, then accessing that through the Fire Stick.

ok - cheers - will try that.

Bloody Curry's, went up to buy another Fire TV and it's gone back up to £79.
He who hesitates.

I know, been running around all week, finally go to order one for back room and it's back at full price. Another few weeks and it will be on sale again

Can someone with either the stick or TV help me with a quick question.

Does the Iplayer and the ITV app include the option to watch live TV, or is it just catch up that they offer?

Cheers

There is a nice little App I've put on the AFT and my phone called TV Player

Yeah, iPlayer and other catchup apps don't let you watch live TV but "TV Player" is an app specifically for that purpose and works well.

I also can recommend the "AirPlay/DLNA Receiver (PRO)" app for £3.23 that lets you use the FireTV as an AirPlay receiver for your iPhone/iPad.

As with all apps you only need to buy it once and it will work on as many devices as you want so it's a decent price.

Urrr.

Encountered MASSIVE stuttering and skipping with 1080p content through Plex. I changed my wifi to a new channel which fixed it, but now it stutters ever so slightly. I mean every minute or so, there's a minuscule stutter. The girlfriend can't notice it but I can.

Quite annoying as I have Plex through my Sony W905 which works a treat so that eliminates the wifi as the issue. There's been plenty of reports regarding stuttering so I need to go and tweak all settings. Anyone else experienced this?

Chiz! Ha, forgot you were a member here :)

Try changing to the experimental player. Can't remember exact menu settings it's under. Think it might be playback?

My stick keeps dropping Wi-Fi every few minutes. All other devices in the house including the FireTV are 100% OK.

CS had to pass me through to a specific team to arrange a replacement - they wanted to help me troubleshoot but I was quite firm and they didn't put up too much of a fight.

:) been here for a long long time :-P

Yep, I've done that already actually along with turning on legacy transcoding. I've not fully had time to play about with all settings either as the girlfriend doesn't appreciate it when I stop and start a movie constantly throughout (as you can imagine).

I've picked up a few 'potential' fixes from the Plex forum so will give it a whirl tonight :)

In terms of pure playback performance, rather than 'mere nice features', would it be better to play content through Kodi or Plex, if it's coming from my Synology NAS? This is on an Amazon Fire Stick. That's if there's any real difference at all!

As it stands, Kodi has better support for higher definition audio - although I forget the exact format that Plex can't play natively, and has to transcoded, at the moment.

Although I stick by Plex for personal use (as I need the multi room functionality and much prefer the "nice features" it has) I also get the impression that Kodi has less fundamental issues with playback.

I'd consider them both to be works in progress though - why not just install both :)

Decided to return mine. It just doesn't do what I bought it for - The inability to stream plex seamlessly when all other devices work as expected is disappointing.

Will buy the box (with ethernet) which should irradiate the issue... hopefully. Shame really. For £20 I thought it was ideal.

I've got a major problem now.
Some of my film/TV directories are on my PC on drive K:/ and 3 out of 5 times when I access the drive from the AFT it will not work.
I go downstairs and K: drive has now gone missing!

To test this I make sure I can see K: drive on the PC, go upstairs, access the K: drive with AFT and most times it will get rid of my K: drive.

Any ideas?
