Amazon Fire TV

dont you have a 24p playback issue if you're running full hd movies with the fire tv?

I wasn't aware of this as an issue, and googling around, I'm still not sure I understand it ! We've two fire TV's, one on the main TV downstairs (a 10 year old 32" sony) and the other upstairs on a NEC monitor that's shared with the wife's laptop - so neither are fancy devices.

What I have had with some blu-ray rips was noticeable judder or the voice and picture being badly out of sync. I'd put that down to the ripping process with MakeMKV, so for the ones affected I run them through Handbrake and ensure the codec is H.264 and that has fixed it for me.

My main reason for going down this route in the first place was all the menus, company animations, forced previews and other garbage you have to sit through. My rips cut all that junk out and I get straight to the film that I, you know like, PAID for !

Ohhh....new Fire TV, I wonder if the £80 price is an early bird price or the RRP.

Will it work with 4k Netflix? I think at the moment you can only get the real 4K netflix stream from select TVs with a chip built in, so you have to use the Smart TV netflix App.

Using my existing Fire TV I have to say, I've been really happy with the HD upscaling to 4K on my Sony TV. I wonder how much a difference it would make.

Did they upgrade any components in it or just made it 4k compatible?

ram, gpu and a sd card slot.

also can handle the new codec meaning it uses less bandwidth.

not a huge upgrade, probably worth it if you can sell the old one on for decent money. people will pay a premium for a fully loaded one.

How unusual, I use the optical out to connect to my Sonos. Not sure how'd I connect it on the new device?

HDMI to the TV and optical from the TV to the Sonos?

No optical out reduces its use as a music player somewhat, does seem a strange decision.

My Prime Video search zen has failed me, I've not found any 4K content yet. Is there some?

Many of the Amazon commissioned shows are in 4k:

Mozart in the Jungle
Transparent
Alpha House

Plus some other stuff like Orphan Black. Some of the movies are too.

Here's some of them, but the list is a bit out of date. http://4k.com/movies/

There's probably more 4k Amazon originals on there by now.

Optical out is an omission. I have this covered with a adapter (hdmi to optical/pass through) which I got to use with my Roku 3 on my projector (use a older optical fed 5.1 system)

I had a quick look on the Amazon website and it would appear it does support Netflix 4K

Good spot! Might upgrade if I can get a decent price for my existing Fire TV just for this. I'm not keen on using the Sony Smart TV interface just to get 4k netflix, it's rather slow and laggy.

Now we need Netflix to also allow 4k streaming over the web for when I'm on my computer!

You get HDMI in to optical out splitters.

If it plays back up to 30/60 fps/Hz, i wonder if this includes 24fps/Hz, as on bluray players?
