Amazon Fire TV

Are these issues with XBMC caused by the locked down Amazon version of Android, or something more fundamental?

Also, is there any reason to get this over a Nexus Player if I don't have, and don't plan to get a Prime account?

I think the 1gb of ram and no Ethernet puts me off the nexus and I have a feeling its going be locked down but if its not I might go for one.

How?! Obviously others have struggled so it would be nice if you gave us a link to a tutorial at least.

Is the interface laggy? Are you able to play media stored on your PC via the network? How well can it play 1080P media (via channels or network media)? Is it easy to navigate with the remote?

This is the app i used to sideload XMBC

and this tutorial:

How does this deal with 1080p MKV's? I'm still looking for something that will allow me to view iPlayer, youtube and stream 1080p MKVs without transcoding from my Synology NAS. Can it do all of those well (either as is or with XBMC)?

Oh does Fire TV have Ethernet? Dam, that's annoying.

I assume Android TV isn't going to be exclusive to Nexus Player, and there will be other devices available?

Hi

I will have a fire TV shortly and wish to install spmc, a spinoff of xbmc.

This seems to be available on the app stores so my question is will I still have to sideload it?

Has anyone put spmc on instead.

Cheers

SPMC doesn't appear to be in the app store for the Amazon Fire TV.

Considering I was able to sideload completely random APK's for various apps that all "worked" (they installed and ran but some functionality wouldn't work as they expected touch input) I don't foresee you having a problem with SPMC.

It does appear that XBMC works fairly well so not sure of the point of pursuing SPMC until they do some development work themselves to target the FireTV (which I can't see at the moment)

OK thanks maybe I will try xbmc first then.

Is the tutorial linked above the easiest to follow for installing xbmc as I'm a complete numpty at this sort of thing.

That tutorial looks fine.

I linked another earlier and they both look the same.

In essence all you do is:

- Enable developer mode via the built in, on screen, menus
- Download a piece of standard software for working/developing with Android devices
- Download the APK for the android application you want to install
- Use the software to upload the APK to the AFTV via your network (no USB required)
- Load the application via the "settings -> applications -> manage all installed applications" option because sideloaded apps won't appear in the usual place

It shouldn't take you more than 30 minutes first time.

Thanks for the tutorials everyone!

You just need to find the XBMC APK. I think this should be freely available but as I don't use it I don't personally know where to find it.

The XBMC APK has been hard to find after they had to switch nightlies to Kodi. Even if you can find it the version is a mess with a skin you can't change.

My recommendation.... TVMC. It's XBMC only fully setup to perfection and a significantly smaller install size and the updated APK is available right now.

Thanks may try tvmc instead, have you a link for the file and would I follow the instructions in the tutorial above the same way.

Thanks again

My XBMC is crashing a lot and staggers during a lot of videos (as in pixelated corrupt videos). Anyone else have this issue?

My XBMC would stutter playing 1080p files, I've turned off mediacodec in Video settings. Rebooted the Fire by holding down the Select and play/pause button for 5 secs, and all my files have been playing fine :)
