Amazon Fire TV

When you sideload XBMC does it just appear as another 'app' in the FireTV GUI or does it completely take over?

Sorry for the noobness - I've just reserved one at argooos and heading to pick it up.

I'm getting a tad sick of how slow and cumbersome my WDTV is becoming so hoping this will be much faster (switching between apps, startup etc)

thanks

It doesn't take over the UI completely, but is full screen in the app. You can go back to home by pressing the home button. but you do have to lauch it through settings>Applications>Manage installed applications, rather than it showing on the home screen.

It appears in the list of applications under settings but its not actually selectable from the main Amazon Fire menu yet. You just press the home button once in XBMC and it takes you back to the Amazon Fire home screen.

Being an android device, have amazon managed to do something about the lack of RGB limited output on basically every other android device out there? Getting pretty tired trying to find an android media player with a proper (ie not rgb-full) video output.

sweet thanks guys. Not sure if I want to use XMBC just yet as I have the option to use Plex from my Synology 712 NAS box?

Basically I just want a good description / pic of the movie before I watch it,, with an interface easy enough for the kids to be able to use.

Just in the middle of setting up plex on me NAS. wow, its got a fast UI! - I'm impressed comparing it to the WDTV, but then again I have had the WDTV box years so it has served me well!

Couldn't find youtube - there was some other pootube app though? lol

I know xbmc can be installed on the FTV, but can movies from a usb stick be played? Also, does 4od/5od and showbox work ok?

According to this, yes, you can play from USB. Not sure how required the "root" is as XBMC itself can be installed without rooting. You might need it for the additional things though so be careful when you get it as I think you can block yourself from being able to root if it auto updates.

Demmand5 (5oD) works but there is no 4oD and I've not heard of Showbox.

EDIT: It does appear to work, just not perfectly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2Zf0ALt0ng#t=395

new update yesterday, with a few new features, one being quite handy.

Soft Restart and Manual Sleep

Put your Amazon Fire TV to Sleep manually by going to Settings > System > Sleep. You can also restart your Amazon Fire TV without unplugging the power. On the remote, press and hold the Select button and the Play button at the same time until Amazon Fire TV Restarts (about five seconds).

bah just when I bought one at 79.99 yesterday!! ah well.

So got plex setup last night but I don't like it - two things
- No folder list - so I have to scroll through each movie individually
- No forward/rewind - it doesn't work :(

Yeah, you missed a trick there as the Plex libraries are better in many ways than folders.

Also, no fast forward / rewind?? Christ, shows how little I use this if this actually doesn't work! Still, it's an official up that will no doubt get a fix soon enough.

XBMC is just as good if you don't use the Plex specific features though.

I spoke to amazon the other day and apparently a NOWTV app will be coming to FireTV, however they couldn't or wouldn't give me any further details. That'll be useful as we currently have both boxes.
