AMAZON prime

yes they are, its very clear to me they take your card details and charge you after the trial runs out

In my case (and I suspect many others) they already had my card details because I use it to buy stuff from them. I don't agree that "very clear" is the same as "buried in the small-print" - still have the email they sent me:

Hello xxx,

Your Amazon Prime membership 30-day free trial has begun. Start shopping with unlimited One-Day Delivery on millions of eligible items, watch over movies and TV episodes with Prime Instant Video, and borrow one Kindle Book for free every month, with no due dates.

Happy shopping, watching and reading.

<<< Lots of pictures of cool films and TV programmes>>>

<<< small print in grey on white text which they know no-one will read>>>

I had Prime when it was £50. I've not renewed since it went to £79. Simples. People need to take responsibility for their actions. Amazon is a reputable company but like any other large company will target customers with promotions.

Same for me. Not happy with the price increase, didn't need the video content, so cancelled. Now if I order from them I choose free delivery and get it delivered to my local ASDA.

Yes it possibly could be clearer that they will charge you after 30 days. But that sort of approach is fairly standard across many companies that offer free trials. I'd always assume that a free trial needs to be cancelled.

You have to remember that there are older people who might not be so savvy. They are blatantly targeting these people in my opinion.

No they are not. They are not targeting anybody specifically they are trying to sell a service to their all Customers.

What do you think they should have a big link saying "if you are as thick as pig **** click here to have this explained to you using diagrams drawn in crayon". It clearly says that it is a trial ... hell I have relatives in their late 70s who understand that before you take a trial out on anything, not just this, you find out what happens at the end of the trial and the help pages are clear on this.

While you won't be charged for your free trial, you'll be automatically upgraded to a paid membership plan at the end of the trial period. For more information, go to Turn Off Your Amazon Prime Membership Renewal.

And from the linked page in the above:
Go to Manage Prime Membership.
Review the renewal date listed on the left-hand side of the page.
  • If you currently have an Amazon Prime free trial, click Do Not Continue .

My subscription with Prime ended when it went up to £70 odd.

My wife never had Prime, used a "free 30 day trial" and had £79 taken from her account about 5 mins later. Was refunded within the hour after a call to Amazon. Then she deleted her card details on Amazon. I'm sure it would have said about this in the small print, but she didn't read it.

If you want Prime next day delivery stuff, you gotta pay, if you don't want it, don't buy it.

Love prime. Ordered some printer cartridges for £6.98 on Saturday afternoon, came Sunday morning with DPD!

I whinged to them about the price increase and they credited me £30 so I renewed.

That sort of thinking is old-fashioned and incorrect - why do you think banks have just shelled out billions for mis-selling PPI insurance?

I've definitely noticed they drag their feet actually dispatching anything I order now on Super Saver Delivery, latest item was ordered on the early AM of the 23rd and it still hasn't been dispatched, they never used to do this which made it pretty pointless having Prime. I don't want Prime, I just want a decent 'Normal' Service, not some second class service because I am not interested in one of their Premium Services.

While I can easily see how people might get caught out by this I also think prime rocks.

Also, having a Fire TV of any kind without prime is kinda pointless - suppose if it ends up being £7 after refunds etc then it's good for being used with Plex etc but I don't see anyone that's got Plex setup being confused by this process.

I'm sick of being nagged by Amazon about Prime. I've recently had a letter from them and an obviously generic plastic card with my name printed on it. The fact they are so wasteful with resources just puts me off wanting to sign up.

It's not just old people that aren't tech savvy, most people who use the internet are not like the average ocuk customer

I do wonder if the people signing up to the trial inadvertently also have issues with malware :p

Prime Instant video is pants, it's full of rubbish!

Yep, my GF got one of these this morning! Kind of what prompted me to post this thread.

As I use them quite a lot (at least once a week!) I was quite happy to pay the £49 per year (or whatever it used to be) and whenever a delivery didn't arrive the next day I would give them a call and they would invariably extend my membership by one month, and occasionally issue a 'promotional discount' as well.

When this eventually came to an end I suddenly realised that my membership had been automatically renewed. Assuming that it had been at the new (higher) figure I queried this with them, only to be informed that I had still only been charged the original £49 which I was quite happy with, as I have no interest in watching films, or whatever!

If anyone is not happy with the way they have been treated a quick 'phone call will invariably lead to a satisfactory conclusion, although it may have to be escalated to second line support to achieve this.

Just my experiences as a happy customer anyway! ;)
