AMD 6800 & 6800 XT MBA LAUNCH AT 2PM TODAY - EXTREMELY LIMITED STOCK!

Seeing what is happening i might try to get myself something on 25th and if i fail i might just something cheap to help me wait through difficult time as rest of parts is waiting to be put together for quite a while.

It'll actually be interested to see if MS and sony put up the numbers for the cost of the consoles including these variables.

The PS3 gives us an indication of the loss factor based on the original MSRP being close to $600 iirc
Like I said even for a dummy like me we’ve known for a longtime that they sell for loses for a large period of the console lifespan. Nothing new there. But given that Sony and Microsoft are 2 of if not the largest corporations in the world, they know a thing or 2 about making money. Yet despite consumers showing an increasing appetite for paying over the odds, neither of them have decided to capitalise, either to recoup the additional costs that scottyboy and Gibbo are talking about, or to offset the loses they are already making. I mean Nvidia, Amd and overclockers are seemingly getting a free pass, yet Sony and Microsoft decided, nah we don’t like any of that money, let’s keep our prices the same, let’s lose even more money. Just seems strange.

Just thought I'd throw in my question here instead of a new thread. Do we know if there will be a 6700/6600 for those of us who can't justify 600 quid for a GPU.

I currently have a VEGA64 which is still performing @1440 - 144hz in most games on high settings but I just wonder what I will move onto next without getting divorced :D:p

We'll probably eventually see one, but only next year.

Nvidia are release their 3060ti soon, which might be a viable option if you don't need to run everything on max.

@Gibbo Looking at how the 6800 series launch went, is it safe to assume the 6900 series launch will be far worse on December 8th??

Given how little info retailers had about the 6800 cards, I doubt there is even a whisper of news on the 6900XT, but given the current stock constraints it's basically guaranteed to be limited.

It's because (in my opinion) that were comparing apples to oranges here. Console makers revenue is spead over the cost of a console lifespans investment in software and gfx card makers get their revenue in a single (larger) purchase.

It's obvious what microsofts plan is with the xbox, to sell gamepass. If they get 100 million subs @ £10 a month for gampass ultimate they can eat a loss. But they need to sell the hardware to sell the pass. Obviously that's just a number picked out of the air - but with MS buying developers to add to their catalogue you can see where the long game is here. The series S (aimed at familes who are on a budget) further shows what consoles makers are willing to do to get people into their ecosystem of software as a service.

Sony are going for the cheap console, expensive games approach - with a digital version of the console testing the waters over what gamers are willing to pay for their games digitally.

AMD and Nvidia are in a different game - they only sell hardware and don't rely of after sales of software, accessories etc etc to deliver continuos revenue throughout that single hardwares lifespan.

I've just had an email from a competitor offering me a 6800xt. When their site went live the only way to order was to email your details...I did it..twice at about 14:15pm and they have just confirmed I was successful. All paid up and waiting for Monday delivery.

Happy days...

AMD have already said the lower end cards will be RDNA1. So what I'm expecting is that, basically the 5700XT gets a new coat of paint and then bam, there's your 6600/6700 XT :p

It's been a long, long time since AMD released a new top-to-bottom GPU stack. They basically don't do that, these days. So you have 2-3 new cards at the top end each release cycle, and that's about it.

How has it gone? 390 series -> Fury (top end) -> 400 series (low end) -> 500 series (rebrands) -> Vega (top end) -> Navi (mid-range) -> Navi 2 (top end).

That's just how AMD rolls these days. Expect Navi1 to be rebranded to fill up the lower half of the product stack.

Just all the more for stretching your gpu out for longer and completely avoid new releases for at least 6 months in future.

Hoping @Gibbo or anyone else can clarify. When the AIBs go on sale on the 25th, will you allow pre ordering rather then just not allowing it at all once sold out?

I unexpectedly got asked to work from the office instead of at home so i cant really have a page on standby ready to refresh every 5 seconds.

I would much rather know its paid for and will eventually turn up rather then scouring the net trying to find one at the last second.

I was 1 and half hours late to the 5000 launch and ended up 462 in the queue for a 5600x. I am just happy its paid for and out the way, just a waiting game now.

Gibbo mentioned 14:00 is when they go on sale. But OC will not start selling them at that time due to website traffic. They will start selling them sometime afterwards.

some of their less friendly consumer practices in the past
These were under completely different ownership. Things change and a lot of hard work was done to improve on those practices. It doesn't serve us well to drag them up which is why we generally don't talk about it.

I'm in my 40s now and I've worked in the IT retail channel since my teens. This is my second stint with OcUK, I was in my early 20s when I started the first. I spent nearly four years under the previous owner, most of which was dealing with customer service complaints and had numerous arguments with him over his policies. Eventually we went our separate ways because he'd barely talk to me any more...he was not a guy who reacted well to criticism. Gibbo left shortly afterwards, thanks to his games, but was lured back after a few years of giving him a headache working for his competition.

Gibbo will confirm, I flat out refused to return whilst he was in charge and insisted on meeting the new owners twice before agreeing to take up my current position. EIGHT years into new ownership and completely new management, we are still dealing with the flack from those early years, even though there's absolutely no similarity in the processes or policies that we operate under now. We know that, thanks to the magic of the internet, we're probably never going to escape it but we try, every day, to add a little more positive to our reputation.

Indeed, until the recent launch debacles, our Trustpilot score was around 95% and that doesn't happen without a lot of work over a long period of time and I'm confident that we'll get there again once our IT systems are improved and our website stops causing us so many problems. We'll never please absolutely everybody but we do try. Unfortunately, launches like this really don't help.

I really hope not, and generally, when a card card hits four figures the demand does drop off quite a bit. Even if we don't receive a lot of stock I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the traffic level will be more manageable.

To be completely honest with you, even with the best intentions, we can't be sure. Many cards might have to start on pre-order, but if the whole website collapses again we might have no choice but to suspend ordering altogether. You might find that we have to suspend it on some but not others, depending on demand

We've had to take the unprecedented step of suspending ordering on the AMD Zen 3 CPUs for just this reason, at some point it becomes apparent that supply is going to take an unacceptable amount of time to catch up with the orders that we already have.

Interesting and always wondered the reasons. Nice of of you to be open and frank about it.

Well I'll take your word for it on that and see how things go. Proof is in the pudding, or something like that. As I said, I don't really put it down to individual employees, you do what you can with what your job role enables you to do, if you're so inclined. Working retail is soul destroying when all the senior staff are obsessed only with sales and profits, to an obscene degree. Seems like you're a decent person though so don't take my criticism and moaning personally. I've been around awhile and it's just how I've seen things. Improvements will always be welcome.

If you had been more active two months ago it would have helped out though. The bizarre reliance on the mods for a good chunk of time really did you guys no favours.

Trying something different with future launches surely has to be the way forward, the product sells regardless. Anything is better than the PR disaster retailers are under at the moment, even if it isn't entirely their fault. I've always liked OcUK for the community around it, for that to get irreparably damaged would be a huge shame.

Don't fall for the "we care" approach of the company as whole. They care about their bottom line. I'm sure some of the staff care but they, ultimately, do what their superiors tell them to. Anyway, if you look at other forums OcUK are taking a hammering reputation wise. They've never cared to go into detail about some of their less friendly consumer practices in the past, they're only doing it now because even they can't completely ignore the negativity online. I guess a ducks back can only shed so much water.

If they cared about anything other than how much money they can squeeze out of us they'd have charged msrp like elsewhere. You'd think they'd want to improve their image, but no. Don't forget, if they are happy to lie about being the primary partner in the UK, what else will they happily twist.

Agreed, let's not forget here that it isn't so much the why, how and where.......OCUK tried to pull the wool over initial stock, mechanism for buying on the actual day and then had the brass neck to make it look like they were doing forum members a favour the following day and also make a complete pigs ear of that too.
Reputation already tarnished, I won't be buying again especially on release days because trust and integrity is already lost.
