** AMD BACK IN THE GAME: PRICE DROP EXCLUSIVE TO OcUK!! **

Hmmm do I cancel my Nitro 480 pre order and get the Fury X. I play at 2560x1080 so Fury X should last me a while. Is the extra performance and less noise worth £150.....

AMD Matt can probably confirm but for some reasons the Fury / Fury X 4GB HBM does not seem to cause them any limiting issues due to lack of VRAM even at 4k. I am not sure but my guess is the HBM works differently or has a form of compression, but let AMD Matt explain. :)

Correct, there is driver level optimisation in play that does ensure efficient usage of the 4GB HBM memory.

When using one GPU i have yet to find a game that can keep playable FPS at 4K whilst requiring more than 4GB of video memory, and the same can be said for two GPUs in 99% of games as well. :)

That said, i cannot deny that more video memory is always desirable at 4K.

Wow I got the LG 34UM88-C for £679 just over a week ago and its now £539. Just my luck ,would look at getting a fury if I got it for that price.

Edit: Scratch that was looking at the new flat screen price and not the curved. Only £80 quid less so less tears now.

Just looked through OCUK website, basically with this week only, you can buy an i5, 16gb of ram, AIO, Phanteks Evolve Case, Fury, 750w Gold PSU, 27" 1440p 144hz screen, 250gb SSD and 2TB HDD for less than £1500...

Pretty damn good rig..

With HBM 1080P and 1440P are certainly no issue with 4GB, but I personally would probably only buy one card as I seriously cannot see a Fury running out of horsepower at 1080P and 1440P, it should blast through every game maxed at at 1440P at 60FPS and higher.

Thanks Gibbo, very honest and it keeps the money in my new monitor pot so you'll get it eventually!

I dont know what to do now if i can get a 390x for the same price as the new nitro rx480?

Or do i save myself a fair bit by dropping down to the 380x for £150?

Anyone?
I'd certainly take the 480 over the 390X. Newer technology, uses 100W less under load and can only get better as drivers mature, whereas every last drop has been squeezed out of Hawaii at this point one would imagine. The 390X might be slightly ahead now (although the 480 matches it in some titles already, such as The Division), but it'll be interesting to see if that's the case in six months or a year.

And I'd discount the 380X entirely. A used 290/390/780 Ti/970 would be a much better buy if you want to drop down to that sort of pricing.

You would seriously buy a 4GB card knowing the way things are going regarding VRAM requirements?

+1

As much as I love the Fury, especially the FuryX's aesthetics, 4GB of VRAM is simply too little.

A 480!!! has double the VRAM, that should be all the warning you need.

Now that NVIDIA's high end have all 8GB cards, we can be sure developers will be happy to bump up VRAM usage also.

I'd always say buy the best you can afford. We don't know 100% how good the nitro 480 is yet until the reviews come in. So all we can say today is the 390x is still very capable card for £250 and is better than the 380x, and will consume more power than the RX480 nitro :)

I would go for the 480 just for the primitive discard accelerator alone. It's a no-brainer with some other nice architecture improvements and HDR support.

Can anyone advise how these freesync monitors would compare against my sa700d samsung 3d 120hz monitor?
It has pretty decent colours for an old TN but thinking a modern freesync 144hz screen should be far better? Worried it would be worse somehow! That AOC looks pretty tasty...

Would I be better waiting for 4k/1440p... choices!!

I had the Samsung for a while and now have the Acer xr34 freesync, the Acer just blows it away, iq, sharpness, 21.9, if you get chance to see one in action I would be surprised if you were disappointed
