AMD Bulldozer Finally!

You already have a CH IV? Officially it doesn't support Bulldozer, however there's an AM3+ BIOS available for it, and Asus is allowing unofficial support for Bulldozer, wait for Bulldozer.

Why? Makes no sense.

I´ve been waiting bulldozers over a year now, thats why
Dont really care the performance figures, it doesnt matter for me as long as the games are working ok. And I suspect they will.

SB´s are really nice and powerfull cpus but for some reason I just dont want one. Another consern for me besides the money issue is will there be enough cpu´s for everyone when BD´s are launched.

Im not trying to be sane about it. Just want this processor sooo bad.! Would buy two of them if I could afford it. And third one under the pillow :o

I'm only interested in this chip for gaming.

I buy mainly based on gaming performance as it's what I do most on my PC. I also like decent all-round performance as well but it's more of a bonus if it's good at encoding, general tasks, etc.

lol, fair enough, as long as you realise it's not a 'wise' move, but I understand if you just 'want' one (or two, or three ;-) )

I'm interested in Bulldozer, but mainly to see what it can bring to the table. If it's good, I'll possibly look to upgrade my system to it, but frankly AMD has to convince me they are good value, and can still compete performance wise, as much as I like them.

I'm interested, mainly because AMD don't screw people over on Motherboard upgrades, I like that I can pick up a board with USB3 and SATA6, and will just be able to drop in a new cpu upgrade to the latest architecture in 3 or so years.

No you really can't..
Intel don't screw with people.

sarcasm or serious?

Intel don't screw with people, yes, they have 2 platforms, so? One's main stream, one's enthusiast, no different to getting an entry level AMD board or a Crosshair IV Extreme.

AMD now have two platforms, LLano, and soon to be Bulldozer.

AMD's Bulldozer was touted AM3, now AM3+.. AM3 was a pointless socket.
AMD plans to go LGA, AM3+ will be another short lived socket.

Are these Bulldozer CPU's going to be amazingly better than a i5 2500k?
I am just about to buy a new PC with a i5 2500k CPU.... Should I go ahead or would I be stupid to not buy a Bulldozer????

Cheers, gave me a good laugh.

I think you've miss understand the flexibility AMD socket system brings. I have AM3 CPU running in a AM2+ motherboard. At some point i will replace the motherboard with AM3+ and then buy a AM3+ or possible an AM4 CPU when they come out. This means i don't have to replace my whole both my CPU and motherboard at the same time, unlike Intel. I accept Llano is different which isn't ideal.

So AMD have MINOR flexability, but they haven't got the performance to back it up with in comparison to Intel.

I did the whole AM2+ Phenom II 940 - > Gigabyte 790fxta AM3 and AMD Phenom II 965 and then Crosshair IV Formula 890fx and 1055T.

As soon as LGA comes around for AMD, then you can't keep that "flexability".

Is this bios ok for CH IV Formula as well as CH IV Extreme ?

No. The CH IV Extreme has been given its own AM3+ BIOS too.

Just like with socket 775 when there were several chipset revisions??
Some of the motherboards did not work with the 45NM Core 2 processors because Intel changed the VRM specifications for the 45NM processors.

What about socket 1155 which barely lasted 15 months?? You do realise he P67 chipset works fine with socket 1156 processors, as ASRock made a P67 motherboard which worked with socket 1156 processors.

Even Ivy Bridge working the current motherboards is not guaranteed. Intel could end up changing something in the end.

Intel has had a poor track record in the last few years with maintaining socket compatibility or CPU compatibility between generations. Not all of the Pentium 4 motherboards would also work with the 65NM Core 2 processors too. This was despite the socket staying the same for years.

Also, the use of LGA by AMD is a rumour. Even if socket AM3+ lasted for a year it is now worse and it means AMD has maintained CPU compatbility for well over three years.

Again,AMD has the performance though in certain applications. The Phenom II X6 is still faster than a Core i5 in multi-threaded applications in many cases. In most instances it is still the fastest processor under £160. Most people don't spend over £160 on a CPU and most don't even overclock.

The main area AMD has the improve performance is in lightly threaded applications.
