AMD Bulldozer Finally!

Has there been no official statement from AMD about the state of play with BD?

Were they losing so many sales to SB, that they had to release BD now to take the place of the Phenom 2?

From what I have seen and heard on these forums, the Phenom 2's are popular chips.

They could have just droped prices slightly, keep BD still in development and bring out a kick ass cpu when ready.

Instead they'v released some half backed cpu that confuses the market for people looking to by AMD cpu's as well as making them selves look really inept as a company.

Did they not test BD in their labs, to see that performance was shoddy even compared to their own chips?

Did that not see that windows 7 isnt ready for their architecture?

opethdisciple, AMD spent a long time and huge sums of money developing the first version of BullDozer.

As a company, if you are able to sell an item, even if it is a little buggy and you have spent a huge amount of money developing it, then you release it asap. If AMD were not a profit making company, then certainly, they could release version 2 of BD in 6 months and scrap version1, but after so much money has already been spent on version1, AMD would be bonkers to not make any money from BD (version1).

Furthermore, the man who decides to not sell version1 and just bring out version2, would almost certainly be fired.

Remember guys, AMD is here to make money. They are not a charity. Just like Intel, they need to keep refreshing their product line to keep sales volumes high and give the marketing people some ammo.

And for those saying that this CPU won't sell...I disagree. Stick me in the purple shirt shop. Give me 10 Phenom based PCs. Give me 10 BD based PCs, and I can guarantee you that I will sell at least 10 BD based PCs, for every 1 Phenom PC. Why? 8 cores vs 4 or 6.

If I want to sell a Phenom (as opposed to BD), I will need to explain to the customer about IPC. If I want to sell the BD, I merely have to tell them that the BD has more cores and has been 3+ years in development. Moreover, it is designed to run the programs of the future. Phenom is history...BD is the future.

Enthusiasts may not like BD, but BD is a marketing mans dream come true, with its 8 (alleged) cores and competitive price tag.

BD isn't just 8 cores though.
Try selling a lower performing FX6 over the equally/lower priced Thubans, or the FX4's over the Denebs
It's not going to happen.

Read the marketing literature Martini.
As a salesman, I will be damned if I am going to explain the customer the difference between a core and a module.

AMD has big posters talking about 8 cores and that is what I will focus on.
If you and I stood next to each other in the purple shop and you tried to explain that the FX8150 doesnt actually have 8 cores, you will be onto a loser.

Who do you think they are going to believe, me with my slick brochures and big posters from AMD, all claiming 8 cores. Or you, with your long, intricate, nerdy explanation with non documented claims, that the AMD doesnt actually have 8 cores?

Be honest.

The moment you start talking about Thubans and Denebs, they will ask if somebody else can help them to decide which computer to buy, as the current salesman appears to be talking a foreign language. :p

And with regards the budget CPUs (ie. FX4 and FX6), I shall focus on the fact that AMD has built this CPU, from the ground up, with multi threading in mind. This is the brand new CPU from AMD, which is only just arriving on shelves. You can either buy this brand spanking new CPU OR you can spend roughly the same amount on an old Phenom, which has been out for almost a year.

Martini, remember, not everybody who wants to buy a PC is an enthusiast. Most people just want to buy a PC that runs all their programs (and games), with no problems.

I understand what you're saying but lets face it PC World etc could still sell P4's to their customers if they wanted to, enthusiasts on the other hand know that BD will be long since replaced by the time it's strengths are ever realised.

EOL'ing the Phenom range is a bad idea for AMD in the enthusiast market at least, without Phenom they have nothing to combat 2500K, BD is faster in some cases but only a few and it's too expensive by comparison.

In my experience most PC World shoppers tend to go for Intel anyway, half of them have never even heard of AMD.

Intel have a good advertising strategy in the UK.

Most couldn't tell you what manufacturer anything came from. The rest just want something fast for their money. And there's the 1%: us. Who reads into these things as a hobby. :p

Note *just*, I never said anything about what constitutes a core.

There's 2 and 3 module BD's. I'm getting at the point that when people say BD in this thread, they're on about the FX8150 which is the 8 core variant, that's like talking about i7's with the default being the 990x.
FX4 and FX6 ; quad and hex core.

Try selling one of those other the equally or lower priced Phenom II counter parts which perform better.

FX 6 ;

Phenom II hex core ;

Same amount of cores, but the cheaper 1090T is better.

Which is why Bulldozer is a horrendous product.

So, what's your verdict?
And 3Dmark11 shows BD at stock is bottlenecking your cards in comparison to the Thuban with 2.6GHZ CPU NB, which is hilarious.

honesty im not to happy so far tbh, yes it may oc to very high clocks on low voltage but without the performance behind it its not gonna do much..

one thing tho i haven't noticed the heat issue...

you wouldn't feel/notice the performance hit games but thats not the point really. encoding is slightly faster, but not enough...

people coming from a low end Athlon II may see a good boost

You won't notice the heat at stock and with a sensible cooler.
It's how much it increases during overclocking is the problem.

Imagine it's a dam. At stock, it's fine, once overclocking starts, it starts to get leaks going through, then further and the dam collapses and goes crazy.

Thanks for the benchmarks Gareth. I also have an 8150 on preorder for some reason. Considering it's still out of stock, I might cancel and get a 1090/1100t instead. I Want to build my new system ready for BF3 :P

Might wait until weds/thurs and then see if it's available yet.
