AMD Bulldozer Finally!

I'm still not in the market for a new cpu. My E5300 plays games fine but my 4850 is starting to struggle with some titles...

I think I'll wait for AMDs/NVs next gpu perhaps before entering the market again.

The E5300 can't encode for absolute **** though.

Yea, I think when you do upgrade your gpu, upgrade your cpu as well. A dual core will bottleneck a next gen gpu and will not cope with next gen games etc....

'Tis the plan to upgrade my entire system when I feel it is time. Still getting good framerates with most games just now.

And I'm not in a hurry to encode either. :)

you've got no chance of seeing an integrated gpu as fast as the 4850 for years!

they are putting slow gpu's in low end processors to keep the power usage low, they would have to release a 200w processor to get a 4850 in there too i reckon.

You'll need to get a standalone card if you want great graphics i'm afraid. Even the most expensive AMD will only have graphics possibly as good as 4670 and that cpu will cost a lot.

Just buy a cpu that has the power you need and a standalone gpu.

I'm definitely not going to be using an IGP.

And the E5300 is clocked at 3.2GHz just now. I should probably overclock it further if I can. Quite a low profile motherboard just now, G41 chipset...

So you'd be fine with an 8 core Phenom II part?
It'll get spanked by a 2500k unless it's in app's that can use 8 cores.

You can't compare GPU's, as the games can use the shader cores.
EDIT : I prefer AMD CPU's. But I went for an intel fling using the 2500k, I had it prime stable at 4.8GHZ... My GD65 however broke, and I ran back to AMD using a 95W 1055T.
However, with the intel set up, in dawn of war 2, I've lost 40 FPS on average, my benchmark score was 100 on the Intel for average, 63ish on my AMD...
Faster cores is the answer at the moment, until games use more cores.

DOW2 is a good example of worst case scenario. It can only ever use 2 cores, max. So only 1/3 of your (our) hexacore(s) are being used. Whilst it may look pretty in some respects, the engine (or the bits it's fashioned from) is absolutely ancient and the game is already on its 2nd expansion ... so using it as an example of worse AMD / many core performance isn't really worthwhile. This game is a dying breed and it's likely that there'll be a maximum of one more expansion before it's updated with a new engine.

Another thing is that the in-game benchmark really is worst case also (not necessarily the case in all games). Your average in-game FPS loss will probably be 20 max.

Most annoying thing about the game from an AMD perspective is that most newer cards (5xxx & 6xxx) break some textures (affected units / scenery is just jet black) when adaptive multisample AA is enabled. Relic broke it with Chaos Rising and haven't fixed it, though as usual they disavow themselves of responsibility.

Theres no difference between 60fps and 120fps unless you have a monitor/TV that can do over 60hz, which most cant.
If a games minimum frame rate never drops below 60fps then you will never see any difference on a 60hz monitor as it's simply impossible.
Even with 60Hz screen you can feel it in the mouse input smoothness. With 120Hz screen it's a big difference.

Btw no way for me to buy AMD if it will have lower (IPC * CPU clock) than Intel - I'd rather wait for Intel hexa/octacore ivy bridge if I was in a need for new CPU. At the same time I hope Bulldozer will be a success for AMD, Intel needs some pressure & competition, as it seems that for couple of last years Intel was doing just enoguh to stay comfortably ahead. Are there any benches yet that would suggest Bulldozer core for core, clock for clock could be better than Sandy Bridge ?

Wow, wasn't aware DoW2 only used 2 cores o_0 Upgrading my bro's comp this week if not within the month. Dunno if it's worth waiting for Bulldozer or go for the i5 2500K build.

the bulldozer cpu's look like they will compete well with the i5 2500K, you'll still need a 3rd party gpu if you are serious about gaming though. Wait 1-3 weeks until the benchmarks are out then decide to go intel or AMD.

I keep trying to convience my self of a good reason to upgrade my current pc in sig to a SB or BD. Bit to be fair, it isnt struggling with any games at all.

The one excuse I have is I still run a P4 based pc, which I still use for browsing etc and that can not play 1080p flash video with out severe stutter.

So maybe I can take my cpu, mobo and ram and put it in my old machine to replace the p4 and get a new BD or SB based pc paired with my 5870.

But is it worth it for games?

I'm sort of in the same situation. I got the components in my sig a couple of weeks ago as a sort of inbetween upgrade while waiting for Bulldozer, but now that it's up and running... I'm not sure I need more, to be honest. I might get a full-size motherboard and get a friend for my 5830, but as I've never seen my CPU usage go above ~60-70% outside of benchmarking, I'm not sure I'd need a Zambezi core at the moment.

Still GASing for one though.

Unless the single core performance of the Llano dual cores is much higher than an Athlon II X3 the CPU looks weaker.

In fact it is the third core of the Athlon II X3 which still makes it competitive with the new Pentium processors.
